Perhaps you could make optional scenes and parts that explore what he likes or some of his emotions in a way that doesn't have an effect on the main story so you don't have to worry about rewriting too much while still expanding the character if you so choose.

I think you should feel free to deviate as far as you want, it will let you have more creative freedom in expressing Puro the way you feel is the best, without having to worry about staying within constraints.
