Put me down for The Killer (1989)

Wildly Mid

Remake “Hard Boiled” with two fat leads and call it “Soft Boiled”

Fred Skull

tmcms

I hope for mor Rick Ducommun sightings in ABz selections.

tmcms

just watched Heroes Shed No Tears after hearing Bang mention it here -- what a cool fucking movie

Mr Anse Bundren

That comment on the report card is the reason all of our comments are “canned” and vetted by lawyers…

Megan Wright

Why'd you start this like Miami Connection

bloodflart

Same video store also had a Hardboiled 2: The Last Blood that I remember renting and hating, but turns out it was an older film (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0099888/) released in UK as HB2 as a cheap sales trick. If I had only known back then, would have saved me a lot of grief.

Isak Hammar

Was obsessed with Woo as 13/14yo. Bought most of his movies on expensive VHS imported from UK (to Sweden), and watched endlessly. Confess being so bummed out when my local videostore later started renting them, I stole several of the covers; my older brother immediately identifying that I had done so bc it made me feel less special. Never denied it, no regrets but good to get off my chest.

Isak Hammar

From 2 to 4 years ago I was listening to this podcast in hiroshima.

Matt Macdonald Dale

Arnold came to a school I was teaching at when he was gov. He got on the intercom: “You’ve got to do your school work…with the reading and writing and rithmatic. And if you don’t…I’LL BE BACK!!!”

Dave Barrera

Some uninteresting and unsolicited G-wagen facts. Started in the 70s as a barebones, 2 door military truck. It has legit off road chops and serious hardware. Like jeeps, they were available in 2 door and open roof versions and completely stripped out. Came to the US much much later in its history, I wanna say early 00’s, and like you guys mentioned it ended up being a “worst of both worlds” type of luxury vehicle for tacky people. They did a full redesign in the last couple of years (but subtle changes visually) to make it a better street vehicle, but they look even tackier now. I saw an old 2 door one for sale in Spain a few years ago for like 15k euro, would be kinda cool to have a proper one that’s an honest 4x4.

Wadi

My cousin spent basically 4th grade to 10th grade in Hong Kong and I remember every time he'd come back to America and visit during that time he'd bring back what I felt like was hundreds of VCD's of new movies and it blew my little mind.

Scott Tammel

I’ll be your woodwinds guy, Chow is playing a clarinet in HB. Kenny G usually plays a soprano sax. It’s in the same key as a tenor, which is why people, including Coltrane played both.

Shmomar

Got really into John Woo because of my friends dad (a classic 90s karate single dad) who was very excited about Hard Target coming out. I still remember how disappointed we all were seeing Hard Target on opening day… I also remember ordering the Cantonese version of this movie poster from a poster shop, and it took 2 months to import, and my parents were not happy with a 13 year old having a poster of a dude smoking a heater, while holding a baby and guns. I want to say it was like $25 which would be a real investment for that age, coming home on my bike with a giant tube out of nowhere.

Conor Hunter

My Chinese school friend lent me his copy of Ong Bak on VCD. Was shocked when it worked in my parent's shitty dvd player

Bring me the Head of Warren Oates

I love the use of white as a blank canvas for extreme blood splatter in film, like the white flour in this one. Reminds me of Cary Elwes death in Kiss The Girls at the end. Wouldn’t be surprised if they ripped it off from Woo

K-Dot

Favorite thing about Hard-Boiled is the literal translation of the Chinese title to English is Heavy Handed God of Cops.

Jason E Becker

"Applesauce" sounds like an old rancher's or prospector's nickname in a Western. "Applesauce McCall ain't much to look at now, but there was a time, boys, when I was the rowdiest customer between Dodge City and San Francisco!"

Adam Lewis

Maybe not the single best bad guys at a restaurant table scene, but for me most memorable is Bronson as a phony wine rep exploding Danny Trejo in Death Wish 4

Madeyouread

Kenny G plays all saxophones (alto, tenor, baritone), but the one most commonly associated with him (the clarinet looking one) is a soprano, like the guys on that HBO show! PS Are the Boyz trying to gaslight us RE : Stanger and the live show?

Alfred Olsen

I looked up G wagon after they talked about it and I was disappointed. "That?" it's very boring! I only know it from "wow" - g wagon g wagon g wagon g wagon, all the housewives pulling up

Frosty peaches

I'm a white American who moved to Taiwan 13 years ago, I'm guessing I'm the only person in this country listening to you. When Rodgers was talking about the decline of HK cinema, there were a factors besides just the UK/China handover (but that is probably the biggest part: the money lured all the bigger actor/directors away.) HK cinema was run pretty similar to the Golden Age Hollywood system with super strict contracts on stars, and total control of distribution (including owning the theaters.) That started dying out around 94. The other thing that really hurt HK was piracy, which was really a magnitude bigger than what went/is going on in the US. VCDs were super cheap and everywhere, you still see old signs for them. HK also relied on alot of foreign income from the Chinese diaspora community in SE Asia buying stuff, and it all dried up as a combination of piracy and Hollywood getting a bigger piece of the market.

Jonathan D Lackey

I was a camp counselor for like 15 year old boys and they were fuckin ruthless in roasting and bullying each other. One of the nicknames they came up with was a-sauce (for applesauce) for one kid and I never knew why, but I could tell it was a nickname the kid did NOT like. Felt bad.

Filthy Phillips

Hi, it's me, an Action Boyz listener who listened to the episode for like an hour and thought "WTF do these guys really not know who Tony Leung is?", and then Gabrus mentioned him 2 minutes later, and then I deleted my post, and then I felt ashamed for deleting my dumb post and wanted to preserve it for future generations. So here we are. Great episode guys, no further notes.

Dark Angel Of The Year

First Criterion movie I bought on DVD…still have it..great action movie

Carlo Villafuerte

I was a little surprised too. Especially Rogers considering him being a pretty next level film nerd. All of Leung’s work with Wong Kar-wai are some the most iconic performances in film of the last 30 years. Also Lust Caution, Internal Affairs and Hero

Dache

Hell. Yeah.

Will See

I wanted to tell him to STFU about the live show.

David Bauer

It’s going to be my Sunday matinee movie this weekend. $6 can do no wrong

Daniel_

Heard it used hear and there on Stern

Daniel_

crazy that the Boyz just call him "that guy" and treat him like a nobody

Authors receive royalties for the copies of their works that the library has purchased for lending. Very few countries have mandated a royalty payment to authors, based on how many times a book has been checked out of a library. And that royalty is laughably small. There is no library lending royalty in the US, of course. As bad as the tv and movie industry treats the majority of the people working in it, the publishing business is worse. Most writers, probably, would say that libraries are a great, if dying, resource, but they see almost nothing from them, in income.

Michael Pemulis

When I first saw this as a teen I found all the maternity ward stuff frustrating. This time around it might be my favorite part. When Tequila walks in and says “there’s hundreds of them!” I lost it

Joe B

At a party years ago I sat next to a guy whose business was financing car loans in LA at 105-110% of the value of the car. He said "In LA people will be homeless and live in their cars before driving a worse car."

Adam Lewis

Just watch it again.

Adam Lewis

I believe He's saying as an Iowa preacher who is going to vote republican no matter what should respect DeSantis more because Desantis hasn't been in many extramarital affairs, slept with porn stars, openly talk about SA they've done, mocked disabled people whatever long lost of horrid shit trump has done.

Mijo

Please consult a doctor if your erection lasts longer than 4hrs after watching Hard Boiled.

Dave McM

I'd like to request 'A Better Tomorrow' if we're doing more Hong Kong stuff.

Rhinn

"What an interesting guy."

I remember when the cops tv show came to cleveland and it was like the must watch event. It doesn’t make much sense—watching to see your city and some of its people make complete asses of themselves. Not that cleveland needs any help looking bad but still…it was a weird thing to get excited about.

Rebe K

One of my all time fave action flicks, thanks for covering it Boyz!

Rick Lewis

I live in the same general area that Rodgers speaks about in LA and its fucking unbearable when you get behind one of those old 70's Mercedes cars especially when its a diesel because they're seriously pumping out insane car fumes to the point where you need to turn your cars air on re-circulating so you aren't breathing in all the bad diesel fumes. And speaking of the G-Wagons. They start at like 140k and they seriously only get like 14MPG. They fucking suck. I used to work right next to the Mercedes Benz dealership in Beverly Hills and it was insane how many people you'd see driving those off the lot/bringing them in for maintenance and they were all tricked out etc. Literally only the douchiest assholes of LA will be driving the G Wagon though. Its just guaranteed. It's wild to think about how much money is floating around out there. Although I'm sure the ownership split is half people who have way too much money and the other half is people living way beyond their means with a 2200 dollar a month car payment at 22 percent interest.

Scott Tammel

I don’t know what to make of this one. I love a good action flick, but this feels particularly dated and way too goddamn long. My attention span can’t handle a movie that is 95% gunfight.

Nathan Rodriguez

Towards the end it just became a mess of shooting, too many characters running around in uniform... just a mess. Not for me! Oh well. I enjoyed Yes Madam like 300 times more.

David McElroy

Not liking it, sure. Boring? That's a bold ass take.

Scott Tammel

Yes. Very sick. Bird flu.

Hammerthrust Von Sexron

I'm glad you guys finally covered Thicke of the Night.

Mike FM

Thank God. I can finally stop sending the Boyz dms demanding they do this one.

Filthy Phillips

All the Thickeheads listening to this episode: “What about Sweaty and Hot!!??” https://youtu.be/ZoQ4ZuiSh8A?si=whPAOs4UPq3uDrUt

Adam Ross

My mother-in-law went to see Kenny G last month and he gave her one of his soprano saxophones. 😂

Brash Tracks

wtf

A love letter to toothpicks and cigarettes

Goodgwill Hunting

Gabrus, if it wasn’t a bit, definitely see if your library has an audiobook of East of Eden, one of the best books I read last year but the audiobook was so well done it really helped with the comprehension

Ryan Quinn

"Who is this podcast for?" Clearly me because when Gabrus said Lexington Steele I chocked on my coffee from laughing too hard

Scott Tammel

Oh man write that sequel!

Let's Talk About Seth Baby!

As someone that did get a university degree in music, when I was a kid I used to play the recorder with one hand and then accompany myself on the piano with the other.

Frosty peaches

I like how every time they do an Asian movie, Gabrus comes up with a million reasons why he has trouble keeping track of which characters are which.

Donatello’s Big Dong

G Wagen is very popular here in affluent conservative suburban central Ohio. I think the same thing, how are you affording? this is an item you hav a budget for along w the house you hav? who pays you this much money? +and PostMalone intros himself with it in the song Wow.

tmcms

It’s funny Rodgers was saying this movie lives in a surreal video game world. Because there is a sequel to this movie, with Chow Yun-Fat and John Woo returning to work on it. And it’s a video game! It’s called Stranglehold and it came out in 2007. You play as Tequila and it has a cool mechanic where you slow down time and dive around the environment shooting enemies. It’s been years since I played it but I remember it being fun.

Sam Riebesehl (Reeb-Uh-Shell)

Listening to ABZ talk about the car segment is so relatable cause I visit Vegas/LA (parents) and the shock of driving scares me and I have raced competitively!!!

Thomas

First scene of the movie- Tequila Popper/Slammer. It is/was a thing.

The Golden Youth

Rodgers was the word used to describe your landlord "schnorrer"? Its a popular yiddish insult for anyone whos kind of a mooch

MB

Thicke of the Night with some quality Belzer https://youtu.be/dZAILTOwnH4?si=RXYJ1pDiztt355YP

Canadian Day Player

Lot of good bad guy restaurant action coming up in enemy of the state

Eugenio Triana

Interesting, Imperial Triumphant are legit

Flappy McGillicuddy-Jones III

It's funny hearing Stanger talking about what he did at the live show

Daniel the spaniel

Fun fact about Kenny G, he loves heavy metal. Here he is with his son playing with the band Imperial Triumphant: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ywcshfrpO3A

Erik Kang

I loved it. Good dumb fun

Daniel the spaniel

Woodwind guy here, Tequila definitely plays a clarinet. Kenny G mainly plays a soprano sax which is most often straight, but there are curved ones which I think is what Harrison Ford has in a Young Indiana Jones episode that Ben has referenced. Annoyingly enough there are also straight alto saxes which are pretty rare.

Jared Niles

Found the full movie on YouTube. First time seeing this and I loved it!

Philip Hollingsworth

It’s awesome to see Tony Leung so young. Truly one of the greatest Actors of the last 30 years.

Dache

hey check out The Beekeeper the plot and bad guys are dumb as fuck but it's got some badass action with interesting kills, good dad movie.

bloodflart

"this random girl thinks I'm a weirdo" -Weirdo

bloodflart

"of course we're at minute one of Hard Boiled so that's why we're talking about Alan Thick's short lived 1980s late night talk show" is why I love this show

Jimjim

Did anyone ever make the recorder cool? Andre 3000 sure made a big attempt recently.

Christopher Davis

Sorry…respect Ron DiSantis why????

Robert Peterson

The baby peeing about a gallon of urine to extinguish Tequila's leg was a nice touch

Adam Kronfeld

This feels apropos of many things. Apropopo gold.

David McElroy

Was kinda hoping one of the boyz would be on my side... this movie is bad! It's very boring. There I said it!

David McElroy

ACL and Colon: A classic twofer. Hilarious

Chabnormal

Chow Yun Fat is maximally awesome in action but I have to say he's pretty damned awesome as the emperor in Curse of the Golden Flower.

Adam Lewis

Let’s fucking go.

ShangDangus

This might be the wettest start to a movie ever. Also bird cafés would be sick.

Gilligan(The marooned Ranchero)

Apropos of nothing - I just saw Hustle (1975) starring Burt Reynolds. It's INCREDIBLY good. And Burt is incredible in it. A very toned down and sensitive performance. Please seek it out. It's a 70s film noir...

The Buffmaster

Cool. I mistakenly watched "Hard Boiled" instead of "Boiling Point" the other night. Lots of babes in this one.
