The Lawnmower Man (1992)

The ActionBoyz discuss The Lawnmower Man.

The Lawnmower Man (1992)

Comments

Reporting in from November 2024. I can confirm the future is stupider than 2023 you can imagine. 🫡

Ron Don Volante

I’m with Gabrus, the chimp was the best part of the movie, so glad I watched the extended cut. Long live cyboman

Liz Thompson

Took like two years off the pod. I come back and I get a Rannazzisi in last weeks ep and a 1800COLLECT “mom pick me up” here. The Boyz haven’t lost a step.

Diarrhea_Every_Day

There’s a UFO in the trail of the comet. For some reason satellites aren’t under its control and the Soviets use a satellite to blow it up.

Diarrhea_Every_Day

Now I know you LA/NY Boyz probably haven’t mowed a lawn since you were kids but yes, grass clippings left on your lawn are beneficial. Here in Florida I don’t know anybody that bags their clippings. They provide sort of a natural fertilizer, giving nutrients back to your grass without the need for chemical fertilizers which are both harmful to people & the environment. All the best to you and your lawns. Love, The Weedwacker Man.

FloridaManMatt

It's February 22, 2024 2:47pm and I am listing to The Lawnmower Man episode for the 6th time. Thank you ABZ for this wonderful gift. Tears in my eyes.

PizzaCrustPunk

I’m not sure if this has been posted, but please enjoy the atrocity that is the”Lawnmower Man” SNES video game (which I rented as a pre-adolescent) https://youtu.be/PKZxhsZjI20?si=wLqdhqU5e-w4e10t

Jonathan Holland

Holy shit, 4 hour episode. What’s the record?

Seth Lambert

Looking forward to the new action boyz character “Gwildo-Man”

Fred Skull

My favorite thing about the entire Stephen King lawsuit is how half-assed the trailer edit is. “FROM THE IMAGINATION … COMES A STORY” https://youtu.be/zzwPuJklv4w?si=EDbhtWHoRjhHvgwK

John Carruthers

Cusper Reddit is pretty active, mainly around the question of who gets to be a Cusper. Anyway, another great show. There's a VR industrial design/3d modeling app called Gravity Sketch that I've been using frequently to level up my 3d modeling skills but beyond that I'm totally in agreement that VR for entertainment feels like a waste of time right now. Looking forward to listening to Candyman.

Re: bootleg Jerky Boys tapes, I feel like there was a lot of stuff in that era that was so much cooler to find like that. The first time I ever heard 2 Live Crew was in a friend’s basement listening to his older brother’s tape of songs he recorded straight off the speakers from another boom box, which was simply marked “RAP” in marker, when I was maybe 11. We had no idea what any of it was beyond the fact that it was more unspeakably filthy than anything we’d ever heard. It was like getting the world’s first case of Sudden Onset Puberty. Anyway this was a great ep. Sincerely, thanks for making it so long; Lawnmower Man is one of those spectacles that is so absurd that I never get tired of hearing people pick it apart (kind of like listening to Nick Wiger talk about Heathcliff), so this was an all-timer for me. (PS if you guys like prank calls you should check out Longmont Potion Castle if you haven’t, I was never really into the Jerky Boys but LPC’s calls are surreal and hilarious https://youtu.be/DyGhQSZyucc?si=2p27EDzHDagKTanb)

Justin Paul Strong

Texted my bf a screencap— “check the time” Feeling fucking BLESSED XD Loved every hour of it and obvs adding this to my watchlist for October

Elise Andmimi

LMAO

tmcms

Holy shit.

Shart Carbuncle

Just watched the directors cut & Jesus, they really do say Cybo Man as many times as Gabrus said.

andrew eaton

I have now heard this episode refrenced on 3 other podcasts this week. Its the action boys (d)effect

Megan

Well I just learned a new word

Nolan-Globus

I 1000% agree. This episode goes into the ABZ hall of fame. Best one yet. I loved the length, I wish they were all 4hrs and I’m NOT being sarcastic

PizzaCrustPunk

Is this movie better or worse with Sly Stallone playing the lawnmower man?

Fart Face

Gabrus’ “I had a lawnmower man itsa boy” line was amazing

David

Another great ep! I highly recommend everyone take this opportunity to revisit the Ray Parker Jr. sketch from Key and Peele (it’s relevant, I promise): https://youtu.be/GxjNOv5QPzM?si=nb6MPrtO0JEqgCWz

Holiestofcows

Did anyone listen to improv4humans? Rogers was cracking my shit up

Daniel the spaniel

BEST EPISODE EVER!!

Derek Curry

I thought the Action Boyz Wack Pack was canonically the Action Faction

John Carpenter's Patreon Commentator

Also, I’m sure you’ve heard this before, it has made the rounds many times, but just in case- that thing about Tom Hanks doing the corporate spot and showing what it looks like for some to aggressively take the bad adjustment reminds me of this Shatner VO booth clip https://youtu.be/XMV1bwXyi54?si=WG6s7D2nbA7XDfMw

David D.

This episode is a new classic.

David D.

This is just a long advertisement for teledildonics.

Joe Lopes

I thought to myself, "oh, they're still going on about Cusack after last week's episode." And then I realized that by coincidence, a few nights ago I had randomly picked the Con Air episode from 2018 to listen to while mopping floors and solving quadratic equations. Picking up right where you Boyz left off five years ago... Keep it up, studs.

RJ Belcher

His son fucking sucked. I fast forwarded every time he was onscreen

Bring me the Head of Warren Oates

Just a heads up Job’s birth cry is coming today in 97 minutes

Bill Irwin

Hell yeah

Will See

My grandma said one time my grandpa was cutting the grass and he opened the front door and calmly went "drive me to the hospital" while his foot was hanging on by a thread cause he ran over it on a hill. Prob drunk though.

bloodflart

One of the slickest side benefits of being nicknamed "Great American Scream Machine" is that you can sign emails as G.A.S.M.

william o'connor

My coworker worked in a bar that Travis the chimp would come into. He sat on his lap, and would drink soda. The cops and people in the city were used to him!

Will

My buddy had a lawnmowing business when he was 16 or 17 & when he was doing the hill part of a lawn he slipped & his foot went under the mower losing his pinky & ring toe. He later became a badass at kung fu.

David

Starting the movie 1 hr & 13 minutes in has to be the record

David

My neighbor growing up mowed his foot off and my parents didn’t care because they told me he was probably too old to mow anyway. My dad went after he died ( from cancer because he was 50 ish when this happened) and took all of his clothes and wore them for like 10 plus years. I was forced to mow the lady’s lawn till she died. All of her dead husbands clothes didn’t fit my dad but he wore them anyway. Polyester 79s outfits till my dad retired in 2004

Mike Theobald

Yeah, I dont necessarily remember reading too much about sexual harassment, but I definitely remember the bit about him strong arming his name into every scripts. To be fair he himself would be pretty upfront about it too. I also remember a rumor Bryan Batt was written off the show cause he was critical about Weiner casting his own son (who was...not great...as a child actor).

Alfred Olsen

Rodgers really needs to rewatch Mad Men.

Donatello’s Big Dong

my dumbass dad (who was a chemical engineer btw) had to go to the ER after sticking his hand under a running lawn mower

Jake

So over the years I've been kind of fascinated by the Cusack/Savage Steve Holland situation. This will be long but back in 2004, Holland said this: "I had met John when he was 17. We went to Yamashura and had drinks, which was totally illegal, and he was just the coolest guy. He was just so much fun and so funny and I was like, 'You are my Lane.' He actually came to a lot of the editing. We were really good friends. We had a lot of fun. Then he went off to do some other movie, and when he came back he agreed to do One Crazy Summer. Which I had written a rough draft of, and he didn't think it was that funny. And I just said, "I'm just gonna let you guys do your thing, and make it funnier when we get there." And I guess they paid him a lot of money. So this is short of a shocker. But we all got up to Cape Cod, and the night before we started shooting One Crazy Summer, we screened Better Off Dead for everyone that was up there because it was mostly the same crew, and a lot of the same cast. So we're all watching the Better Off Dead screening that night, and John walked out of the movie. About 20 minutes into it, he walked out, and he never came back. The next morning, he basically walked up to me and was like, "You know, you tricked me. Better Off Dead was the worst thing I have ever seen. I will never trust you as a director ever again, so don't speak to me." He was just really upset. And I said, "What happened?! What's wrong?!" And he just said that I sucked, and it was the worst thing he had ever seen, and that I had used him, and made a fool out of him, and all this other stuff. And I was just stunned, because it was as funny as shit. And he was great in it. And he was helping me edit it throughout the summer." http://www.thesneeze.com/mt-archives/000134.php Then in 2015 Cusack addressed it in an interview and it sounds like maybe he thought it would be darker based on the script he read? He says: “It was one of those things where I made it, and I didn’t really have a feel for it. But it was fine. It was good. But what happens is that you have to go [to your press tour] and they’d want to talk to you about The Sure Thing or that movie instead of what you were there to talk about. So, it wasn’t that I hated the movie or hated anything. I just didn’t want to keep talking about it. “And I felt terrible about it,” he continued, “because if the actors or the director [thought that I hated it], that was on me. I never really thought about it. I was just on to the next thing. I was like 17 years old … I just felt bad. I had nothing [against the movie]. If people dig it, that’s great!” The script had a lot of black comedy elements and surrealism that hasn’t been done in the genre. But I was looking at ‘Oh, I didn’t like the score, or I thought the cinematography would be a little darker, but I was 17 years old, so, no. I don’t have anything against it...I feel bad that the director [thinks I have something against it].” https://www.pajiba.com/career_assessments/john-cusack-has-nothing-against-better-off-dead.php So I guess it just depends who you believe at this point. Obviously it was a lifetime ago.

Tim from New Hampshire

Did anyone else see Timms and think…white Bokeem Woodbine?

Madeyouread

Amazing!! Could have used another 40 minutes though…

BLeeC

Sure, when Lawnmower Man hangs out with a weirdo in a basement injecting drugs, playing video games, and looking up shit on the computer he becomes a superhuman genius but when I do it I just get a lousy intervention

AFistfulofGwildors

Holy shit, 4 hours of ABZ about Lawnmower Man. The Planet of The Gapes at the end too, instant classic.

ShangDangus

One of the lamest things Matt Weiner did on Mad Men was to put his name as a co-writer on every single script for the show. To outsiders that might seem justified since he’s the showrunner and creator but it’s extremely unusual as far as tradition goes and he did it for two reasons…(1) He then was paid half of the episodic script fee and half of the wga residuals on each episode. Even though as the EP he’s making a ton of money off of each episode he produces by slapping his name on each individual script he’s directly taking a huge amount of money directly out of the writers’ pockets. (2) He wanted to make sure that if any episode was nominated for a screenplay award that he would get the trophy (along with the “co-writer”). Total sack of shit. Universally hated by all writers that I know personally. You can do a lot of things and be a dick and all that but when you straight up rob your staff of the money they deserve…gross.

Pod Ween Satan

Also, Dean Norris is TWENY NINE in this movie… wild

Alex

The screenshot for this one is all time Also, hats off to Stanger for killing me with the benevolent Silly Putty scientist bit

Alex

Sweet! Saving this for my 10 hourish drive from Chicago to Asheville this Thursday (guided hiking tour through smokeys, Blue Ridge Hiking Co, highly recommend). Have to watch the director's cut before I leave. This movie hit the video market right at the right time for me, cause my friend and I thought it was pretty awesome and cutting edge stuff. They stuck on the trailer on every movie we rented it seemed. Temped to buy the blu ray.

Dan Skisak

The thing they used on us was something that they had to change out a cartridge after every shot, but granted this was 16 years and some deployments ago lol That sucks that they made to go to both bootcamps (not on you, just of course they would), all the prior service reenlistments I know got to bounce straight to infantry training battalion, and skip a 2nd boot.

Kyle Chaney Multimedia

Fantastic episode with no tangent unexplored. I know they're goofin with the idea of a Tubi ABZ show, but the Boyz introducing / hosting movies like Joe Bob Briggs would be a home run

alex d

JK, love the pod, truly the highlight of my week. Shoutout to Clubber Lang’s roommate Jason, hope he lands on his feet after losing his valet job.

OMG_Becky

“We have yet to have a problem female listener.” Challenge Accepted.

OMG_Becky

Action Boyz delivering classics in 2023. You love to see it! I'm so glad I found this podcast

Nolan-Globus

Lol. Shout out to Stanger’s imaginary friend.

Doug R

The calls were to a bar called The Eastside in Olympia, WA. My office is across the street from it.

Sneakaboard

I watched the director’s cut and knowing I had a 4 hour episode of the Action Boyz truly enhanced my viewing experience. The sheer anticipation of the breakdown of the Bronson basement scenes had me laughing aloud. What an Octooky kickoff.

RyanYB

I haven't mowed a lawn in decades and even I'm familiar with mulching lawnmowers.

Alfred Olsen

Perfect day to have a 4 hour drive to do.

David D.

My parents generation all had a circle scar on their left arm/shoulder I actually just noticed it on Sharon Stone in Total Recall the other day

bloodflart

They made me spread cheeks and get deloused

bloodflart

Been here since the beginning baby SEAT AT THE TABLE!

bloodflart

Arcade is a better 90’s VR movie because it has Seth Green and Peter Billingsley in it

Jonnykillsaw

Cusack is an extremely online Anti Semite too. Just a top to bottom shitbag.

Moira's Machine

And yes, I realize I didn’t need to describe what happened in the short story because it also happened in the movie.

Richard Trickle

Maximum overdrive was based on the short stories, Trucks. A comet flew over the earth and that somehow made all machines want to kill people. Makes sense.

Richard Trickle

The trailer on Apple TV starts “From the imagination” *long pause where they definitely edited out Stephen King* “comes the story…”

Ryan Buck

Yes, almost like a spiritual trilogy.

Don Knott Steiner

My route was awesome today thanks to this 4 hour podcast. Mission accomplished actionboyz

Arthur Newman

Correct, and you don’t really feel much because it happens so fast

Adam Ross

Cusack bailed on starring in Savage Steve Holland’s “How I Got Into College,” which was supposed to be the closing movie of that comedy trilogy. Without Cusack it doesn’t really work, but the script isn’t quite there either.

Adam Ross

Here is that Tom Hank’s Sony seminar speech. Pretty great 😂 Awesome episode btw boyz!!! https://youtu.be/Ngf6hMWSmFA?si=BNElCSZBrG2wuw9b

Darien Fisher

I was shocked by the reveal that "Cybo Man" was literally the name of the comic

Fan_of_giants_420_69

Stephen King's short story was inspired by The Great God Pan by Arthur Machen. It's an awesome, early gothic novella (1890) that predates and clearly influenced Lovecraft—about a woman who undergoes brain surgery to allow her to see the old gods. She ends up having a child with Pan the Fawn (spoiler). King is a big fan of Machen and has said his work was a major influence on his career. He called this novella "maybe the best horror story in the English language." That was one of the reasons he hated the weird film "adaptation" so much. There's an edition of Night Shift out there with story intros by King where he discusses this novella. Anyway, for Rodgers, Stanger, and all my fellow Constant Readerz, I would highly recommend checking out The Great God Pan. It's license-free at this point to read digitally and it's pretty short.

Antonio Bandanaz

"Just when I think you couldn’t possibly be any dumber, you go and do something like this… and totally redeem yourself!"

Shaun Anderson

I needed 2 more hours

Mike Theobald

we did it Jobe Could be total bullshit but what I heard about Cusack from a dude from Chicago who's wife was a stripper back in the day is that according to the strippers who fucked Cusack, his kink is making ladies say "You're so fucking famous!" while fucking ..but maybe that's like the Richard Gere gerbil story people ascribe to any celeb I dunno

Jon Smith

I’ve been zombified.

Irvin

Check out my review of this podcast over on Gelp!

Brando

I was always under the impression that the injection gun doesnt use a needle at all. It just shot the vaccine or liquid at such a high speed and pressure that it punctured your skin. Therefore you don't need to change needles between patients and you can do a bunch quickly.

Dustin

Was in the Marines from 07-13 and I remember them having the "vaccine gun" when I was in, but to my knowledge it was not the same needle each time. You're pretty much a pin cushion in your first weeks of boot or any time you're going overseas to developing countries so the vaccine line was a pretty common scenario.

Kyle Chaney Multimedia

You guys were talking about VR demos on the podcast got me thinking about those VR cafes from the early 90’s. I only saw one at Bayside in Miami. Never got to do anything with it because once my father saw the price for a session(It was like $60 for 15 minutes) he gave me the “Maybe next time. We don’t have enough time” excuse. He was in the right. They were busted ass boxing, racing, and shooting games. I probably got more fun out of hanging out at the Sharper Image for an hour a floor below, than end up lying to my dad about having fun because I’d feel sorry for him spending the money. Edit: This shit… https://youtu.be/rVn3H93Ysag?si=Xa0EdLTpNFLM-WDS

Don Knott Steiner

This podcast brings me so much joy. Just the Boyz describing the chimp robocop/terminator vision has me losing my shit. THANK YOU BOYZ!

Scott Tammel

This is the best $10 I ever spent, thank you boyz

Ciscokid

Yes, I had to give up on peacock and switch to amazon because it was glitching so bad.

Ian A

If I had less impulse control I would def be the Action Boyz hotline's Marianne from Brooklyn mixed with a healthy dose of Wendy.

Suzadooz

Good book about why phone bad https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/57933306

Jimjim

Gabrus called out Prodigy's Music For The Jilted Generation. Nice. No Good is one of The Prodigy's best tracks. Listen as loud as possible.

Chabnormal

In Basic they get you in an assembly line then a lady jabs you in each arm, walk forward and repeat like 10 times in a row. Feels like you got punched the next day and everyone is sick for the next few days. No clue what they put in me probably nuke, ivermectin, brundlefly DNA, dino DNA, Amy green drink

bloodflart

All this mule and horse talk reminds me Ezekiel 23:20

Gilligan(The marooned Ranchero)

This is why this is my favorite podcast and why I became part of the zombie squad. Love these boyz 🥲

Kira C

Lawnmower Man!! More like weed whacker

Chabnormal

Lmao

MB

Congrats on all the love in this episode you've always been a real one 💪

MB

For some reason, I thought this movie had been done already.... I'm glad I was wrong. Can't wait to cozy up to a fireplace with a cup of cocoa and listen to this.

Marc Davis

I have another bright idea pal. Remember Herzog listening to the brutal death of Grizzly Man? Do that but it’s Stanger listening to the voicemails. We don’t hear the audio. We just see his visceral reaction

Joe B

“There’s fuckin squirt in the birdbath” almost made me crack up at my job.

David Bauer

if the hardcore singer looks like Jobe you about to die in that pit.

bloodflart

(robot voice) one. on. each. hand, Ryno

MB

I’d pay $12 for a video tier that is just a brief monthly minute clip of the boyz being sat down in front of a computer and obligated to view whatever fuckery unfurls from the discord thing. No need to read anything out loud. Just their expressions. Fuck it, it can just be the Patreon comments. We post enough manifestos here.

Joe B

Did anyone watch this on peacock? Parts of scenes would replay like 5 times without sound.

Daniel the spaniel

I’m just going to assume everyone remembers the part of the pod where they talk about someone hating where they are in life. You all got that, right?

Richard Trickle

I hate where I am in life too but I wouldn’t dare take it out on my sweet baby angel Stanger.

Richard Trickle

4 hours is like half of my shift, you make work easier huzzah fellas

Alex

4hrs hell yeah!! Toilets are getting extra clean ! Janitor life baby!

John McClane

I heard on a podcast recently that Cusack didn’t realize “Better Off Dead” was a comedy until he was shooting it, and went off on the director in front of the crew.

Don Knott Steiner

I can’t stress enough how grateful I am for these guys putting out an extensive hilarious podcast every week. This is the fucking best

Alex Elani

4 hour podcast - thank you action boyz!!!!!!!

hobbesthecat

Anybody else confused when there was no video for this one? Had to go back and reread the Zombie Squad description. My bad

Dean Thorne

#JUSTICE4ROSCOE1138 how many more chimps with guns are gonna have to die senselessly before we, as a society, do something about police brutality?

Dark Angel Of The Year

I can't believe the way Job treats all those poor cds. Put them back in the case!

Daniel the spaniel

Can’t wait for the Lawnmower Man 2: Beyond Cyberspace five hour epic podcast.

Don Knott Steiner

Sorry boss, won’t be getting much done today. The Boyz just dropped the 4 hour Lawnmower Man

Melissa Joan Fart

Jobe getting more agency and getting into cowboys mirrors Ken from the new Barbie movie getting more agency and also getting into cowboy culture/horses. Greta Gerwig is a fan of lawnmower man?

Julian Neuweiler

I saw Cell a while back and thought it was a decent movie, but you have to like Cusack though. Them comparing his hair to Cage is perfect because to me they both took a similar route career wise. Cusack is just the subdued Cage.

Gilligan(The marooned Ranchero)

I've seen this movie several times and I've never remembered that Pierce Brosnan is in it.

Michael Pemulis

Do you think when Job is really smart but before he goes mad, he would look back and be embarrassed that he thought Roscoe was a man?

Seth Buchanan

See you boyz later, I’m off to ring every phone in Val Verde

PatrickKilbrogan

I'm guessing a lot of the additional stuff is in the first half? It definitely picks up after Jobe's powers kick in, but the pacing before that feels insane.

Dark Angel Of The Year

Thanks for the 4 hour ep helps so much with my hour commute love ya boyz

Christopher Myers

4 hours, hats off to you Boyz

Keith Jarrett

I absolutely could not believe how long this movie is (director's cut). It was a fun ride, but it went on forever. Going back I wish I would have just watched the chimp beginning and then switched over to the theatrical cut for the rest of it.

Ian A

Well now you have to do a five hour ep

Eugenio Triana

One day, I will sit down and actually watch one of the movies, covered on this podcast...

The Buffmaster

Lawnmower Man being the longest episode is the most Action Boyz thing ever

Bring me the Head of Warren Oates

This movie is a love letter to shirtless men

Brix

You bastards finally did it. 4 hours. Well done.
