Rudy (1993)

The ActionBoyz discuss Rudy.

Rudy (1993)

Comments

How old? I started with Ghostbusters, Beetlejuice, Gremlins, etc around 7-8.

Brash Tracks

My wife played basketball at Notre Dame in the late '90s. Rudy was still dicking around the school milking his 15 minutes. And back then Muffet was a shitty coach. Haha.

Brash Tracks

According to the movies time, how old was Rudy when he got carried off the field?

Kubu

This is a love letter to giant clovers on outerwear

Slurp

I grew up in South Bend and can confirm the real Rudy is a piece of shit. Years ago he used my dad’s printing shop to make some shitty fliers or business cards and was pissed no one recognized him. Also not surprised Rodgers was called the F word almost immediately there

Malcolm Ryder

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yvh69gFrLRM it was in my Youtube recommendations earlier this week

Nick C.

i dont really give a shit about rudy but its streaming for free in canada so fuck it here we are

Emily Tong

Love that the anniversary is on my 30th birthday and my fifth year for action boyz probably should reevaluate some life choices

Maria Pedro

“My ferrets got into Notre Dame,” had me wheezing with laughter.

David

If your podcast hosts refer to themselves as “the boys”…

John Carpenter's Patreon Commentator

I like the way you incorporated Beastmaster into the last 10 minutes of your Rudy episode

CokeHawk

I've learned so much from this forum.

Michael Pemulis

The Rudy episode, otherwise known as the "Debut of Modo and Dodo episode"

Kyle Daly

Reposting his reply to me when I told him to grow some balls and put his weirdo rant on Patreon like a big boy. His account's been suspended since. ---------- Copy and paste it with my username, I don’t give a fuck. I’ve never posted on the patreon. Don’t see a reason to when Reddit exists. I prefer to have my fan forums exclusively used by fans. It’s always weird when creators start creeping on the forums. Er I mean… OH NO BEN RODGERS, THE MOST GULLIBLE WELL-READ GUY ALIVE, IS GONNA DISAGREE WITH ME!! I mean seriously, the amount of obvious pitfalls he gets tangled up in never ceases to amaze. Dude talks about all the books he reads constantly but isn’t aware that every new technology for the last 2000 years has been a scape goat for structural societal issues? This is like “how to avoid dumb boomer brain 101” shit. And then he’s also eagerly fallen prey to the China propaganda. They do all these old action movies and regularly talk about how America scapegoated other countries (specifically Russia) in the past, but old Benny boy is convinced that the anti-China sentiment funded by the wealthy American class is a real serious issue this time! Can’t keep track of the number of times Ben moaned about China over the years. Probably still thinks they’re communist lol. Oh he thinks phones are the main enemy because they make people selfish and they play music out loud without headphones? It’s not like we’ve had an economic system that’s promoted brutal individualism for the entire 250 years our country has existed. That couldn’t possibly factor into the way people behave. Society celebrating selfishness and idolizing the most selfish hasn’t had an impact, it’s just these darn phones! ---------- RIP GregorTomato, we hardly knew you.

Ultra right

Swimfan69

My thoughts exactly

Jenn

politely correct

connie voltaire

I think some people (the boyz) included seem to think you have to go on there and log every movie you've ever watched and leave elaborate reviews. the real way to use it is just log movies as you watch them, that's all. You'll see the most watched movies of all time on there are all recent stuff. I think parasite has been logged at least x2 more than star wars. it doesn't really have any features beyond that so idk what more there could possibly be to it. I also use it mainly for the watch list and to remind myself with my horrible memory if I have seen a movie/liked said movie.

connie voltaire

Nah, Fujita is a good guy. Look at Gregg Williams for bountygate. And he’s friends with Gleason, he was a huge part of Team Gleason and carried him up Machu Picchu, produced the documentary about him etc

Ryan Stanger

Hey now don’t be disparaging the essays. We all try to keep them fairly coherent here, barring a few proud exceptions. For example, I know the cop that was in the “Pat the Patriot” costume when Jamal Adams brutalized him back in 2019,

Joe B

As a dad of a younger kid, Itd be great to hear more of Stanger & his experiences showing which movies at which ages. (I know Quick & the Dead is out)

David

Gabrus asked how a guy like Scott Fujita could get missed… I loved watching him during the Brees-Payton golden era of the Saints, but I heard he was a tremendous asshole. Rumors are he was a big part of leading Bounty Gate, and even had beef with Steve Gleason ...allegedly

UnknownPhilosotainer

Also theres these things called maps

Sneakaboard

I have tried twice and bothtimes the shitty flip phone still cost me like 150 dollars and broke in a couple months, it really seems like they do not want people doing this.

Sneakaboard

Has anyone tried switch back to a dumb phone? I’m tempted—and curious about anyone else’s experience. Losing navigation seems to be my biggest concern.

Kazoo Monroe

I think “Lucas” gets credit for the og slow clap, and it seems Rudy is practically a remake of it. There’s no movie I hate more than Rudy and I’ve never watched a second of it (This is not a complaint about covering the movie. I listen to hear the boys chop it up for three hours a week and they can cover whatever the fuck they feel like)

Madeyouread

Daniel Ruettiger was a motivational speaker at my middle school in Oklahoma in the late 90s. His whole speech was about how his dad gossiped too much in his retirement community, but no specifics were given. He just talked about how he visited a lot and eventually got his dad to stop doing it as much. Then there was a very thin conclusion about how we could also change for the better or something. It was pretty weird.

gobiasChindustries

Not surprised Odenkirk is a foot guy after seeing the Bedtime Stories episode

Jimjim

Correct, and Bubba Gump is in it as well as the yellow king from True Dick. It ain’t the pianist but it’s fun.

Gator

This is the garbage-man-who-fixes-things-is-a-secret-badass movie with Adrain Brody right? Not the garbage-man-who-fixes-thing-is-a-secret-badass movie with Stallone?

Data Janitor

One of my neighbors in college was a walk on to the football team. He was the staring punter for three years, then ended up playing in the NFL for about a year or so. He was the Giants punter in the 2010 season that kicked it right to DeSean Jackson, which is a pretty infamous play amongst giants and eagles fans. I have a couple of stories about partying with him and workouts etc but I didn’t want to write an essay in the comments

AFistfulofGwildors

Hmm. Cusper you are?

Don Bell

I either watched a version that didnt have Vince Vaughn in it or my eyes rolled into my back of head out of boredom and I missed it. This shit sucks and is just a politely correct Radio. 1.5/5

paleprince420

Hi Rudy we're home early

Jon Smith

It’s on Prime

Gator

Holy Shit, anyone looking for a unique action flick check out “Clean”

Gator

What’s the bigger psycho rich guy move? Demanding barefoot men in the front row while you perform? Or walking out of an Elton John concert because you were in the second row instead of the first?

Kevin Thomas Shane

Am I the only one who knows the wool blankets best from jail or the drunk tank?!? Fuck...

James Evers

With Sports-Tember here, has anyone seen BS High? I feel Rudy would have become one of his victims.

Perla X. Caballero

Anyone here old enough to remember Sean Astin in The BRAT Patrol? It was a made for tv movie that aired on ABC's Magical World of Disney. It was like a year or two after Goonies. Plot centered on a ragtag group of kids on a Marine base, trying to foil a plot to steal military equipment. I have vivid memories of kids on BMX bikes outrunning Army jeeps.

Thatguy

This is the most beautiful thread these eyes have ever seen

Bob Brown

I love the show. Thank you sincerely

TheDemonKane

Shit, for I second I thought you might have been GregorTomato coming over to the pateron to double down. Glad we cleared it up. Regardless, never delete your posts - at the very least, redo them in a Lou Holtz voice

Ryan Stanger

Coins back in stock, just in time for ranazizi day

The Coin Guy

Gotcha, that makes sense!

Jenn

It's basically what you said, some people get very clique-esque similar to some parts of "Film Twitter", except they skew younger.

wayner

Nico Nolte deleted their post! Don’t be a coward - stand by your public service announcement about the virtues of social media

Ryan Stanger

What am I missing? Why is all this shit about social media and its merits coming up? I can’t remember talking about it on the episode? I guess we said it was better in college when people would talk in the cafeteria instead of looking at their phones or some shit? Just fyi, we use social media - the show probably wouldn’t exist without it. But thank you for teaching us how to use it happily and safely AND encouraging us to find balance

Ryan Stanger

cusper? beguiling? Lol

Ryan Stanger

What is this? I don’t even remember what we were talking about? People playing loud music on their phones?

Ryan Stanger

A Pedicure is an absolute delight. Make sure you get a place with a high end massage chair. Get that deluxe callus remover option going. My God. So nice and relaxing. It’s worth every penny. I used to have embarrassing hands and feet too but after a couple sessions you get over the anxiety. It’s a must do while on a resort style vacation.

Pod Ween Satan

Phones should just be for messaging and looking up facts to prove your partner wrong, during an argument.

Michael Pemulis

I politely declined

Clifford

Young people just use phones differently. It’s a totally different vibe. Where older people feel disconnected from others because of phones, younger people feel more connected. As a Gen Z / Millennial cusper, I can vouch that people are making friends and building fulfilling relationships with phones, social media, etc. I have a friend who’s a few years younger who I became friends with solely from social media. We live in the same state but different cities so we’ve only hung out in person 3 times but we’ve been friends online for years and we’re friends before ever meeting. Young people just have totally different boundaries and social norms when it comes to social media. You can look at it from a negative perspective and see the bad or you can see the good. I do think phones have done bad — spreading misinformation, wasting time, making some people feel disconnected. But we’ve always had that stuff. Anyone who doesn’t get good things out of their phones just shouldn’t use them as much. I admit that even as a cusper, I’ve found it beguiling and jealousy inducing the way people only 3-4 years younger than me use social media and phones. But at least I can admit it’s part jealousy. “Phones bad” is reactionary and will likely approach full blown moral panic levels in the coming years. Oh yeah, and it was ironic the way they touch on college being such a unique time where you’re constantly surrounded by people similar to you, all within walking distance of food, friends, job, and education. Did phones create urban sprawl and the 40 hour work week where wages haven’t kept up with inflation and rent hikes for the last 35 years? Happy 9/11 -GregorTomato on Reddit Thoughts?

bloodflart

dude knows talent

bloodflart

who tf chooses Spree?

bloodflart

My favorite extra was the guy wearing Reebok Pump cleats in the tryout montage

Bob Brown

How many spree did you take and how were they?

AFistfulofGwildors

A *Cheers* with Non-Alch-Guinness. JM16

tmcms

Gabrus came to me, big, strong, tears in his eyes...chanting "Ru-dy. Ru-dy."

FiddlersGreenDay

he was using an affected voice on the call, sort of southern and manly. Their impression just kinda morphed into Elvis.

meowmers

Fellas, this is an instant classic along with The Fan. Sportstember continues to deliver

Andrew Lamberson

Pretty sure it's from the last Shadow Wolves

Jared Niles

re: Nathaniel Hackett, Rodgers Goldmember coach. The reason he got the Broncos job last year was because they wanted to trade for Rodgers but had to settle for Russell Wilson but anyway even before last season started this made the rounds where he calls a touchdown a "Tugguliscious" pretty cringey you just know this guy is not head coach material, about a minute in https://youtu.be/-bzEydtXGJE But that's nothing compared to Jonathan Gannon's Kendall Roy vibes meeting his new team this year. Another one and done https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Z2QGFw2m1Y

Jon Smith

I listened to the whole episode last week and still don’t understand the connection between the guy who commented on Stanger clearing his throat and Elvis but I love the new bit anyways.

Big Stepper

The scene with Rudy not being allowed on the bus to ND annoyed me. He signed up for the trip so you would think there would be room on the bus for him. But whatever

Jeff

Another 48 Hours

Michael Lambert

Genuine question- I pretty much just use Letterboxd to log what I watch and maintain a to-watch list. (I find it better than a note on my phone because of the JustWatch integration.) Sometimes I scroll reviews for a few minutes after watching something. And it’s fun to see what my 3 friends that are on there and Mike Mitchell are watching. Do the Youths get way too into it somehow? I am not that old but I genuinely can’t imagine how I’d go about being obsessed with Letterboxd. It’s useful but idk how much more I could do with it if I wanted to haha

Jenn

I friggin love Love Island (UK)

Seth Buchanan

I have a Pavlovian crying response to the score of this movie

Jeffy

If I was in that pretentious acting class I'd have to admit getting teary eyed at Armageddon when Bruce takes the detonator.

Dustin

Didn’t realize Kevin was Chef Kevin. This guy has been part of my life for the better part of a decade somehow.

Capt. Podcast

Do one of you fine folk remember the episode the fellas were trying to find where they go through the Burger King kids cups with Big John?

Christopher Davis

Deep right

Adam Ross

I wish my dad was still alive, so I could play the ABZ John Wayne bits for him and watch smoke come out of his ears at how mad he'd get. I can smell the cheap vodka wafting from his breath, just thinking about it.

Michael Pemulis

This movie is dream shaming for those of us that set the bar very low

Movie Donkey

In this age of rampant cynicism it was genuinely a treat to watch something so sincere, joyful and triumphant

K-Dot

"As he lost his mind, doing karate all the time" Fuck that made me laugh.

The Buffmaster

My irish catholic step-dad called me and my twin brother 'gay boy' our whole childhood. I still hate that fat piece of shit

Chabnormal

Sean Astin was a regular at a place I used to work at as a valet. He didn’t tip most of the time, but one time he did offer me some of his Spree candy that he was eating out of a bag.

Clifford

I was a full time center too, and full time right field.

Swimfan69

The Rudy episode for 9/11. Can’t say the boys aren’t holiday programming.

K. D. Campbell

more like BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOdy

Dark Angel Of The Year

Really enjoyed “Desert Hearts.” Thanks for the recommendation, Action Boyz!

Andres David Lopez

Voltron Dicksuck ate my homework

bloodflart

The blue mountain state Rudy episode really gets the Rudy was annoying vibes right

Kevin Fennell

Austin Butler Elvis is a great addition to the ABZ gallery of rogues.

Adam Lane

From all us wise janitors of all walks of life: thank you boyz

Evan Radigan

Is it true that Stanger once, during a game, tackled a guy and made him say Matte'?

The Buffmaster
