Willow (1988)

WILLOW this week... the Boyz kinda liked it, just not all of it. Sure it’s pretty broad, a little one note and too ambitious with its special effects but there are some moments that really work. In conclusion, motherfuck those fucking brownies.
every time the brownies were mentioned i let out an audible Ugh

I thought he was pretty good in Thunderheart. Really wish ABZ would do that movie.

Audio tracks are all out of sync in the last 30 minutes, pretty good.

Two things I learned today: Val Kilmer has a tracheotomy and he and Sorsha got married after this movie

This was my first time watching the whole movie through, and I kept getting bumped by how similar the score is to Krull. My brain kept going "Wait, that's not how the song goes" during the high-adventure bits.

Return to Oz is the better slightly dark movie made for kids.

Haven’t listened to the pod yet but watching Willow now with my kids, the score during the wagon chase is the Goonies theme

My favorite performance of Kilmer is Real Genius - i think it’s his strongest performance. Although Darr will prbly say it’s Tombstone or Heat

His name is I. Ron Giant, like L. Ron Hubbard, so Rodgers is technically correct.

Yet again my favorite thing is Ben will get something wrong (how you say Madmartigan) and then Stanger will leap in with a correction that is also, somehow, wrong.

I didn't mind them until the wagon chase. The flow of that entire sequence keeps getting broken up so we could check in with the Brownies every 15 seconds (That's also when the seams really start showing on the composite shots, which to that point had looked pretty solid.) That's when it clicked for me that the Brownies shared something in common with Jar-Jar on a conceptual level: These are characters that Lucas imagines are getting into big, broad slapstick hijinks at every single possible opportunity, and that there's nothing the audience is going to want more than to see every SECOND of this hilarious comedy taking place.

Baseball might be getting shit wrong. The NBA has a good system: The vaccinated sections were pretty spaced out for each level. At the Nets game two days ago I grabbed a lower bowl seat- good vibes all around.

This movie ruined me as it made it so I was only attracted to redheads wearing plate armor that showed off their voluptuous boobies. And little people, I have a fetish for little people....

Speaking of sleds, when I was a server at O’Charley’s in Louisville, KY in 1997 we would use the large server trays as sleds. I remember going on a date seeing Titanic and then she and I going to my O’Charley’s for drinks. 3 hours later, 8 servers, a few cooks and she and I drunk server tray sledding. I tried standing on 2 small cocktail trays. Felt like the first Iron Man suit test. I’m not sure how I got home that night. 5 stars.
