I got really into the details on this one, but I thought I’d share my thoughts and what I did after Golden Demon.
Don’t get me wrong—I was very happy to receive a Commended Entry. Like, incredibly happy. Standing on stage with my idols was an unforgettable experience.
That said, I made a few touch-ups for several reasons. Some were simple mistakes I didn’t notice before, while others came from feedback I received from amazing people like Liam from Liam’s Painting (incredible artist and person).
Major Change: I adjusted the OSL (Object Source Lighting) tones to a more coherent scheme—red and orange instead of multiple different tones.
While the lamp may have looked better individually, in the context of the scene, it was drawing too much attention away from the centerpiece: the tank. Now, there’s a visual triangle that focuses the viewer’s attention more toward the center.
Simplified the Triangle: I removed the tank driver’s OSL around the head—it was just too much.
Subtle OSL Adjustments: I added more nuanced OSL light bounces and reflections to the tank itself. For example, in the image showing the plasma weapon’s four steps, you’ll notice I initially overdid the effect and had to dial it back. These changes can be seen on the floor and the lower half of the main gun.
Increased Contrast: I added more white to the tank’s armor for higher contrast, helping it stand out more from the rest of the diorama.
Minor Touch-ups: I made small adjustments here and there, though nothing major enough to warrant a picture.
I hope this is interesting for you! I’m planning to enter it into MPO now and bring it to next year’s Golden Demon again.
Best regards,
