“I volunteer as tribute”/”I hunger for this game”:In reference to The Hunger Games, a series of novels that were adapted as movies in the early 2010s. At the time this was posted, the prequel novel published in 2020 is to be adapted as a movie.
“Sublime”: Spoofing the North American street wear brand Supreme. In the latter half of the 2010s, the company sold a clay brick with the logo on it that became a prized collector’s item.
“Any means necessary”: In 2020, there was a fad of drawing anime and cartoon characters in street wear. This was due to a popular fan-art depicting Dragonball’s Goku in a Hypebeast jacket, which later became known as Goku Drip (drip being slang for ‘fashionable/ attractive clothes’)
“Ya Boi Era”: I keep hearing of some streamers or YouTubers using this as a greeting phrase. I just found it mildly amusing they used the phrase as English localisation of the manga, now anime, パリピ孔明 Paripi Kōmei, or Kongming of the Party People
“Fred Skirang – Magical You”: In reference to this song,which was the first English-language pop song to be officially used in the ending credits of a pair of video games released internationally—to my knowledge.
