Human Studies

So I was clearing out my hard drive and came across something I'd completely forgotten: my initial sketches exploring what the human versions of the Howlers, Corvix, Thymos and Peyra (who back then was a dormouse) would look like in Flora-Fauna-Fen Survive.

This was from way back in January 2015.

I haven't uploaded anything here in the past few days, so have this as a bonus.

It sucks worse when you have to balance it with your dayjob and deal with the pressures of life too...

Also, the reason one should keep old sketch pages and notes is that a half-formed idea from 3 years ago might not have worked at that time but it could work now. Human creativity is so annoying since it seems like if you have one idea you have ten, all at once. Have to learn to sketch ideas quickly…

Thanks for asking; it’s more than what you would think. There are reams and reams of physical sketchbooks, sketchpads, backs of envelopes, notepads, and what-have-you, full of abandoned ideas, half-formed concepts and what not. Plus, whatever I doodle on the computer in between projects but doesn’t get saved. A lot of it isn’t made publicly available. Thinking about it, some of the practice pieces are still with my mother or the art schools I graduated from and what not. So who knows, could be well into the tens of thousands by this point in my life (mid-30s). The key thing to remember is that no one is a genius off-the-bat and the first thing they draw is suddenly worthy of being adorned on the Sistine Chapel. It’s important just to draw things for yourself. Even if it’s not a “finished” piece or nobody else but you can see it, you’re building up your muscle memory, co-ordination and experience. And some of the works I call “finished” aren’t even that, they’re just practice pieces in themselves to see if I *could* do something. Sorry I don't have a definitive number as an answer -- the way I see it, I'm always practising, testing. 😅

How much practice/testing do you put into your work btw?
