From Russia, with Love was a bit of a difficult one to derive from. Not because it’s a movie I didn’t enjoy – it is nice to have on in the background from time to time. And it is an interesting time capsule reflecting the concerns of the Cold War at the time in 1963, and showing off a far more liberal Turkey.
But it doesn’t have any big set pieces that later Bond films would use, and is particularly workmanlike in its approach. However, it does set up Bond’s nemesis organisation, SPECTRE (who were out to avenge Doctor No), and introduce the iconic cat-stroking villain, Blofeld (though his face would not be seen until several films later). And it remains surprisingly faithful to the 1956 novel on which it is based.
So, I tried. I remember liking “the Shoe Lady” (Klebb) when I was younger. That’s it really.
Oh, and the film's primary antagonist, Donald "Red" Grant is a portmanteau of both this … electric thing and one of the Warframes.
Enjoy
