Last post for today I promise, but I could not let today pass without acknowledging the birthday of my wife—the inspiration for Battle Duck, and the best thing to ever happen to me. She asks the important questions, like “when Optimus Prime transforms into a robot, where does his trailer go?” She helps my creative process (looking over my shoulder as I draw Dr. Jekyll quaffing her fateful potion and making helpful “glug glug” noises), chooses watching Grimlock G1 episodes over Jurassic World movies to celebrate dinosaur day and says unbelievable things like “I’d like to see the Snake Eyes movie again.”
In all seriousness my wife and I found each other fairly late in life but just in time to face some of our toughest challenges. All through it she makes me smile with her wacky mind and infectious laughter. She’s got some years on me and neither of us are young, so every day is a gift. If not for her support and patience, this Patreon would not exist.
I’m hoping in the coming year to give Battle Duck more of her due—she’s a fun character and a great foil for the somewhat more serious and level headed She-Wolf. Above is a WIP of a redo of one of the early illustrations of ol’ Ducky, inspired in turn by the No Man’s Land scene in Wonder Woman, and one of the first drawings I did using the iPad. I’ve learned a lot about the tools available to me since, and my wife specifically requested an update, and she certainly deserves that and more.
Thanks for indulging me while I gush about my awesome spouse. We will return to our usual programming tomorrow.
