Sometimes You Just Need a Hug - Process

The process of my latest painting.

I. - Here I first establish a basic sketch to get an idea of what's going on. I don't think too much about the composition or anything, I just want to get the feeling out and get the basic shapes.

II. - I fill out the basic local colors to get an idea of what the characters will look like. Only roughly, but I try to not go out of my lines too much to save myself time later.

III. - I put a basic multiply layer on top of the characters with slightly brown shadows, and color in the lights with an orange tone. I don't want to go too much into detail yet, I'm only figuring out which areas will be hit by the light. I also set up a quick background to know where the light might be coming from.

IV. - I merge my character layers and start overpainting. Single strokes for the fur, painting it into clumps so it looks more natural. I start thinking about possible shadows cast by the characters, subsurface scattering, and so on.

V. - I flesh out the background a bit more, just adding more fluff texture before finishing it and applying final effects.

VI. - The finished painting, I added a few more overlay and multiply layers to enhance some dark and light tones. I can certainly see I'm lacking in the darks, but I think it's good for now :)
