Update: The Big Three

Hey everyone. Hope you're doing alright.

Life has been pretty busy for me lately. I'm planning on moving next month (hopefully to a new city if everything goes well), and I've got a bunch of other stuff going on. So I'm taking it easy on videos until that's all sorted. But I do still wanna work on something, so I thought why not take a look at the Big 3?

Discussions about the Big 3 anime and manga are maybe some of the worst, most pointless discussions on the internet, and I hate them almost as much as I don't care about them. But it is interesting that it was specifically 3 properties that became super huge. Just like how it's interesting that there's always 3 big basketball players being talked about, or 3 big rappers. And I just kinda wanted to branch off into a more generalized history video talking a bit about why we decide to make things into Big 3s, and relate that to the discussion of anime.

If you have any ideas related to the video, comment them down below. I do also have some Patreon stuff I wanna work on and get out, so stay tuned!

Not to plug someone else's YouTube in another's discord but TotallyNotMark actually recently did an intense deep dive into the concept of the "Big 3" Animes that might be a good spring board into this topic. As apparently the original concept started as a Japan popularity poll but as that poll shifted answers/grew out of style the public perception basically invented new things to keep the Big 3 as the big 3 citing wildly vague sometimes inaccurate metrics like Volume sales or Merchandise. While in actuality they only retain that title because of how well and prominently they stayed in public consciousness. There could be some offshoot connection with the rule of 3s in basic literature where 3 is the sweet spot for any repeating subject to get the point across in a pattern, thus becoming the gold standard for everything that would follow it.

As I understand the original big 3 were due to manga sales, further confusing the big 3 discussion today as it's not based on any objective measurement like the original big 3. Might be worth mentioning which would also vaguely irritate and stir the big 3 manga discussion which could be fun

Theres also the “dark trio” or whatever they call it, consisting of chainsaw man, hells paradise, and jjk. Sort of like a newer version of the “big three”

You could talk about the big four metal bands and then just leave one out to troll people if you want. Same with accounting firms.

What about a video that talks about the influence Journey to the West had on anime or video games? Would tie in nicely with the release of Wukong. Hope the move goes smoothly!

Half of the time I’m not even sure what to call “the big three.” Lots of people will say bleach, one piece, and Naruto, but nowadays it seems like it’s demon slayer, my hero academia, and jujitsu kaisen. I don’t think it’s as simple as “the old” big three and “the new” big three, because two of the old three are still going strong (boruto doesn’t count) and one of the new three is over, and the other two are a dozen or two chapters from being done. I think it’s more about standing the test of time rather than being the biggest most grand story ever. But I’m sure you will come up with a more cohesive way to put it. Good luck on the move!

I would like some deep dive into Bleach. Naruto and One Piece overshadows it, unfortunately, but I loved (and still mostly love) Bleach. It has such a 2000s aura, with insane battles. Quality wise, it's very up and down, way less consistent than Naruto or One Piece, but its highs are insanely good. The first Bankai is *chefs kiss*. So, if possible, give some love to Bleach, thank you ^^

Maybe one of the topics should be about the 3 episode rule?
