When a supervillain goes about taking down minions, there should always be a point to it, beyond just removing obstacles in your way. You should always assume that someone is watching, and that your exploits will be seen, which requires a bit of showmanship on the villain’s part. What form that showmanship takes depends on the reputation you’re trying to cultivate. A silent assassin would strike a killing blow before anyone knew they were there, but for an unstoppable force of nature, like I was portraying myself to the Gel-nak, you needed to show overwhelming dominance.

Which is why my next attack brutally carved into the Warrior who managed to scratch my armor. My blade bit deeper into him than his had mine, and his eyes rolled back into his head as unconsciousness took him. And then, my eyes locked on one of the other warriors about me, and I pointed, silently singling them out as my next victim.

Bloodmoon could not act, having used up her action this segment to keep the warriors from cutting her into pieces. Sure, with Serafina, Midnight, and Lucy around there was plenty of healing available, and even death wouldn’t be the end. However, even if someone could bring you back from the dead, it was much better to avoid being dead in the first place. I had seen too many supers, on both sides of the law, over-rely on the healing and resurrection powers of their comrades, to the point that they didn’t know how to fight properly without their support, or when something found something that disabled the healer’s powers. It was sloppy, and I wouldn’t have any of that in my team.

This time, I saw Mindtaker making the hand gestures she used to concentrate her powers, and her eyes locked on to the warrior that had almost taken down Bloodmoon. This time, she spoke her command out loud. “Throw away your weapon, and take her with your claws.”

It was a clever play. Now that the warrior was in melee, the ‘take cover’ command would most likely count as running from battle, which would work against his psychological limitations. Throwing down his much more dangerous sword to rely on his claws, however, was a very different story.

“Umbrae, indignos feriite!” Mistress Midnight spoke the spell words again, and, once again, shadows drained from around her, and into her, and then burst forth from her hand, striking the warrior she’d hit before, sending him to the ground, down, for the moment, but not dead, yet. She did not have the same type advantage as I did against the lizards, but her attacks were still very effective indeed.

There was no sense giving the lizards time to regroup. I only had two of the warriors on me, now, but Bloodmoon still had all four of hers. Even with Mindtaker’s help, I knew she’d need me to take some of the pressure off. Which is why I did not hesitate, and cut down another of the warriors facing me. The warrior never stood a chance, thanks to my magic blade.

“The Bloody Moon shines upon you!” Bloodmoon took that moment to go back on the offense, her scepter smashing into one of the warriors who hadn’t been targeted by Mindtaker’s mental commands. The warrior flew back, and imprinted himself in the side of the same shuttle his friend had hit, collapsing in a heap on top of him.

Mindtaker shifted focus, looking at another Gel-nak Warrior. “Throw your weapon away and take her with your claws,” she ordered, her mental might crashing down upon the warrior. Once again, playing to their psychological makeup to ensure the orders were harder to refuse.

And it worked. The two warriors she’d targeted threw aside their blades, and threw themselves at Bloodmoon. One managed to rake his claws twice along her torso, battering her, but not drawing blood. Thankfully, she was still up, and in the fight, and the other two warriors on her missed their attacks, including the one still holding his blade.

Unfortunately, seeing Bloodmoon hurt, even superficially, caused a moment of distraction, and the lone Gel-nak still targeting me took advantage. Their blade caught me across the chest, with a solid impact that cut into the frost armor, all the way to my suit. It would definitely leave a bruise, but I’d survive. Just more reason to hurry up and take these lizards down.

Segment 9:

Mistress Midnight +2 CSLs to OCV (OCV 9)

Mistress Midnight’s Attack Roll (Warrior 4), OCV 9: 3d6 = 7 (Hits DCV 13) (Hit)

Corrupting Shadows: Drain BODY 3d6 = 13 Active Points (Drain 7 BODY)

Warrior 4: 23/23(30) BODY

Warrior 4: 48/48(55) STUN

“Umbrae, carnem corrumpite!” Mistress Midnight’s words once more were laced with magic, and a blob of oily shadow struck the warrior who injured Bloodmoon. The shadows sank into the warrior’s flesh, and his scales began to discolor, looking sickly, almost diseased. A potent reminder that the shadowy caster had many tricks available to her, some of which were nastier than others.

A quick slash cut down the last of the lizards standing between me and Bloodmoon. Warrior pride didn’t mean a thing when I was just that much better, and had the type advantage for my attacks. I stepped over the strewn bodies as I made my way to the group surrounding my fallen magical girl, ready to lend a hand.

“The Bloody Moon shines upon you!” Bloodmoon’s incantation matched a dull thwack as she swung her scepter in an uppercut motion. The warrior that had cut her found himself being lifted off his feet, and thrown up, into the air. Unfortunately for him, his flight took him almost twenty meters into the air! That landing was not going to be pretty.

“The swordsman’s the bigger threat, go after him!” Mindtaker called out, as she zapped the last of the warriors she hadn’t already implanted some command into. She was trying to take some of the heat off Bloodmoon, in the best way she could.

And it worked. As the warrior Bloodmoon sent flying began his return towards the ground, the warrior still bearing a blade turned to face me, while the one with claws out attacked Bloodmoon. She suffered a couple scratches, but was still standing, while my target proved to be less effective than the others who had taken me on.

And then it was done. My blade cut down the last warrior not cowering behind cover and holding a weapon, while Bloodmoon’s scepter sent her last opponent crashing into the same shuttle the other two had hit, and the crack of a pistol firing rang out just before there was a wet thwack of the now very unconscious warrior hitting the ground.

The final two warriors quickly folded once we got to them. Neither overcame Mindtaker’s compulsion to take cover, and so neither were ready when my blade cut them down. Less than thirty seconds from start to finish, and everyone was alive. Some of us had bruises, to be sure, but no real injuries. It was a closer call than I would have liked, but that’s why I tried to avoid anything approaching a fair fight.

I took a breath as I looked out over the unconscious lizards, and said, “Right then. Good work, everyone. Midnight, signal Nemesis, and have the drones bring out the gate, so the Russians can get to work.”
