Of course, the warriors weren’t going to simply let us play the whole way through. They had to at least try and do something against us. Stolen Victory, Serafina, Pyra, and Foxtrot all had Warrior Caste attempt to cleave them with their two-handed blades. The only one that actually accomplished anything, however, was the one attacking Pyra, who just barely scratched her enough to draw blood. One of the warriors on the third ring moved towards Web Mistress, attempting to use his disintegrator beam on her, but his shot was just a bit wide.
FX dropped a blast of light and sound, focused on the Emperor’s head. Unfortunately, a black shade passed over the giant, scaled bastard’s features, some kind of automated defense for his eyes. He still looked like he was hearing things, though, so that was something. Probably would interfere with him giving orders, somewhat.
Web Mistress turned her own blaster on the Warrior that charged towards her. There was a flash of light, and the sound of dial-up internet, and the Warrior was simply gone. We’d talked about her doing a ranged version of her ‘send someone to the digital world’ ability, but had never had a suitable test subject, until now. Looked like it worked.

“Insolent mammal! I will have your head for that!” The Emperor snarled at me, pulling that massive two-handed blade from his back, and moving fluidly into a diagonal slash that spoke of long hours training. I did my best to dodge, but the sweeping blade still caught me across the chest. Thankfully, the extra ice armor gave me enough protection that what would have been a devastating wound was merely a painful gash across my chest. I’d survived worse.
The Creeping Frost continued to advance along the Emperor’s form. Didn’t do much in the way of damage, but every little bit helped. Even if I didn’t land another blow the rest of the fight, I’d already won, so long as I didn’t lose. But I wasn’t going to just leave it at that. The Emperor was too dangerous to just rely on the frost to wear him down.
A slash of my blade carved an icy streak across the Emperor’s body. My ice attacks were overpowered against these lizards, but if I was the type to fight fairly, I would have been a hero, not a villain. I smiled as the Emperor’s eyes rolled back in his head, and he collapsed to the ground. “Emperor’s down. Clean up the rest!”
“The Bloody Moon will punish you! Bloodmoon Blade!” Again, Bloodmoon’s incantation for her attack spell. Honestly, I was so glad that I didn’t have to yell attack names all the time for my blade’s normal attacks. Sure, the special attacks, like Winter’s Breath, which turned targets to ice, needed the incantation, but I could live with that. Having to give the incantation every time, like some sort of anime character? That would be hell for me.
Of course, it was worse for the Leader caste that Bloodmoon had been targeting. That lizard fell to the ground, injured, and unconscious, but not dead yet. Didn’t matter, he wasn’t a threat anymore, which was the main thing.
Foxtrot lashed out with her claws, raking the Warrior caste that had stepped up to attack her. They fell next to the other one. Not dead, yet, but out of the fight. As to be expected from the kitsune. Her eyes met mine and she offered a feral grin. While the human woman might have originally been a heroine, the yokai was always a warrior, first and foremost, and clearly loved the thrill of the fight.
Stolen Victory continued slashing at the Leader caste she was facing. She didn’t have as much raw damage potential as other members of Devastation, but that was fine. We had damage dealers. Her role was to grab people’s attention, and make them focus on her. And it was a job she did admirably. She didn’t have to take out the enemies, just keep them focused on her.
“Sinners in the eyes of God, suffer His Holy Wrath!” Serafina unleashed her spell again. This time, the warrior she turned it on slumped down, unconscious. Her eyes met mine, and she nodded, once, to show that she was keeping track of everyone. None of our group were badly injured, so healing could wait a moment.
Titania slashed at the Leader caste she’d been fighting. The lizard looked shaky on their feet, but wasn’t knocked out of the fight, just yet. Not terribly surprising. Titania’s attack was actually stronger than my own, but I had the type advantage that made my abilities hit harder. She was doing fine, though, from what I could see.
Pyra turned and wreathed her hand in bright orange flames. Her Flaming Fist attack was powerful, easily enough to take down lightly-armored foes in a single strike. Against the warrior who had come up to attack her? The result had the warrior rocking back on their heels, clearly needing to clear the stars from their eyes.
But the Leaders weren’t going to just let us walk all over them. Not that I expected them to do any differently. Disintegrator beams flew at Serafina, Stolen Victory, and Pyra, but none of them landed. Stolen Victory effortlessly dodged a strike from the leader she’d been battling, while Titania’s armor tanked a blow from hers.
The Worker Caste, only able to react to the outbreak of combat now, four seconds into the battle, scrambled for the exits. With Web Mistress and FX in front of the glorified armory where their weapons and armor were kept, they had no chance against us, and they knew it. The Leader caste snarled at their cowardice, but there wasn’t anything they could do about it. After all, they’d just seen their Emperor fall. It was natural for the weaklings to run at that point.

The warrior in front of Stolen Victory tried to aid the Leader she’d been focused on, but her defenses were too high. She easily avoided the warrior’s blow. Not that the warrior was unskilled, she was just better.
The last remaining warrior managed to clear their vision, and snarled at Pyra. Not that they were able to do anything more than that, of course. They were bound by the System, same as the rest of us.

"They've been in the whole time." Yes, I noticed.

2025-03-13 22:09:32 +0000 UTCI said they were going to be happening because this story was sticking to HERO System rules. They've been in the whole time.

2025-03-13 22:05:26 +0000 UTCHas someone actually requested these dice roll segments? They just feel like they're pointlessly bloating the chapters.
