Someone asked about a Spaceballs 2 movie? https://www.ign.com/articles/spaceballs-2-plots-a-course-for-2027-with-mel-brooks-in-first-teaser-trailer

Yup - some of the dialogue is a direct lift from the attack on the dams. Apparently 633 Squadron may have inspired with its Norwegian Fjord "trench". Honestly using WW2-era aircraft as a reference for the movement of the special effects was inspired as they are slow enough and manoeuvre enough that you can "read" the battles in frame, and the "ground" being so close that it gives your brain a speed reference. Genius! As for Adam's question of what was the Gold standard air battle on screen before this, it was probably one of those WW2 films - if you discount earlier Biplane stuff (great, but not conveying the sense of speed), I'd pitch "Battle of Britain", even though it was only made less than 10 years before Star Wars, and has lots of those wingover manoeuvres that look so good on an X-Wing :D .

Adam you asked what was the flying movie before thsi/Idea for the trench run: George used The Dam Busters as reference. Then for other decent air battles before Star Wars: Battle of Britain and Midway

This rewatch made me curious about what a modern remake of this movie would look like. I'm not suggesting it actually happen, but filmmaking has changed drastically in 50 years, both in the actual physical craft and in how they're written/envisioned. Take this story, rework some dialogue, update portrayals based on what's been added in, it would be very interesting.

Fun fact: I found an excuse to write a paper about this movie in college. I had a very similar reaction to "having" to watch Star Wars
