My understanding is that Max would have been left behind had he not run up to Krampus and tried to make a deal to save his family. Max was operating on a more Disney fairy tale logic, where heroic sacrifice is rewarded, but Krampus is more in line with "Cinderella's stepmother cut off her daughter's toes to make them fit into the glass slipper" kind of fairy tale. He's actually evil so he (it?) was basically like, "You want your family back? Okay. Ask and you shall receive." And now they're all trapped in a snow globe forever. Very not hooray.
