Saw Watch A Long

Hey Peaches! Halloween month continues with the movie that started a franchises that refuses to end. Neither Jay nor have seen this movie so this is quite shock as the reveals come at us. It's also quite a blast from the past, as this movie is SO VERY mid '00's. So Peaches 'do you want to play a game?'

This movie has the pieces (lol) of what would make the later films work, but they're definitely not executed great in the first outing. Other Saw movies retain this one's soapiness and heightens it, occasionally to the point of absurdity. Like I think there's a 30 second scene of an envelope being shoved under a door in Saw 4, but we don't find out any context for that until Saw 6. Sometimes it's rewarding; sometimes it's frustrating. They can be a fun time though. There's one centered on health insurance that's unfortunately extremely cathartic for Americans. It helps that the traps frankly get better. This movie really leans on the psychological aspect of the bathroom trap, but as you noted, the dialogue and acting are not good enough to sustain it. Love Carey Elwes, but it's not his best work. The reverse bear trap is really the only "good" trap in the movie. And I at least find it interesting that like 95% of the time, the traps made for the films have to be practical, and they have to work. As for the Jigsaw twist, I think the only reason it worked in 2004 is that we were operating at peak edgelord era. It feels very 'welcome to my dark, twisted mind.' Same with the whole 'um, actually he doesn't REALLY kill anyone,' which is obviously complete nonsense. There's a reason that the police procedural aspect of Saw (which unfortunately persists until Saw X, aka the best movie of the franchise imo) never advanced to the courtroom phase. The more interesting thing about Jigsaw being in the room is that Tobin Bell gave this role a lot of respect and treated it seriously. IIRC, he was actually in the room most if not all the time. I'm pretty sure every time you see even a little bit of the body in the room, it's actually Tobin Bell and not a double or a dummy. And just like Jigsaw, he super didn't have to do that all that.

So, the director and writer themselves haven't seen it in a WHILE because they know they've made mistakes in the film and all they'll do if they rewatch it is point out what they could've done better, or what they would've changed. I personally think that the climb of Gordon's insanity is somewhat natural but due to the flashbacks it's a little off. The question of why John/jigsaw is in the room is asked by everyone in the fandom and it's never really answered. Everyone kinda points out that some of the games are unwinnable. I feel like that's one of the things that the writer and director would've changed if they were to make it today. This is their first feature, they made a demo of Amanda's trap and that's what made the producers agree to get it made. Unfortunatly they were given 18 days to film and when they needed to do a reshoot, Wan and Whannell had to do it themselves and on their own time. You can kinda tell if you rewatch it, Leigh Whannell plays Adam, played Sing when they entered the warehouse, that's why you don't see his face, he played Amanda, put on a wig and the clothes to do some hand shots with the entrails. They made the movie right out of college and you can definitely tell they didn't know some things BUT it's what kickstarted their careers and I'm glad it's done well in the last 20 years.
