Willow S1E08 Watch Along

Hey Peaches! Here. We. Go! The final battle to save Eric and defeat the children of the Wrym. A lot of really cool things happen in this episode, and most of it is on camera. Kit and Alura power up. Bowman kicks all sorts of butt off screen, and Grayden finds a difficult path ahead of him. Is this the end for our party? We really have no idea.

Thanks for following us on this journey. It's been a little rocky, but over all a pretty good time. The year is only starting and two huge shows start next week. Strap in!!

I only just in the last two days finished the last three episodes and I have to say it felt sort of meh. The thing that really struck in this episode was the magic battle and seeing that the Crones magic energy was red while Elora's green and then I recalled that earlier episodes depicted the magic used by Willow as blue and I immediately thought of Star Wars. Good Lightsabers are Blue or Green and Bad Lightsabers are Red. I realize Graydon's magic was Purple which is a color combo of Red and Blue indicating equal parts evil and good, which goes in line with why Mace has a Purple Lightsaber as he is able to tap into the Dark Side of the force without being corrupted by it. While I know that Willow is not in the Star Wars Universe, but from a Meta perspective it's not that big a leap to think that the magic in the WillowVerse is the Force but used in a completely different manner.

I personally think the show was really good, but not great, and a lot of the things that made it feel not great were not major issues, just small issues in otherwise great scenes that made those scenes feel worse as a result. Honestly the biggest issue I had was that the plot set up by the first 2 episodes was repeatedly interrupted by issues popping up until episode 7 got back to it, effectively making the middle half of the season just about character development with small amounts of lore about the big bad getting sprinkled in randomly. I give the series overall a 7/10, good enough to have me interested in a second season, but just troubled enough that I am hoping they take some viewer feedback to heart when they write it.

I enjoyed watching this with you guys. I hope it gets a 2nd season because I feel you guys are right. It has the potential of a great show.

Christian Boatman

it was good not great but I could see where they dropped the ball that could of made this finally great. they spent all last ep. training to fight the henchmen and we never got to see those fights. both times 3v3 off screen and 1v3 bowman offscreen

Dark Airik for a second was reminding me of TROS Hayden Christensen. Kit was giving medieval Edward Elric iron man. I have a similar feeling w the closure of this season it was fun but not spectacular / anything to write home about. I’m wondering if it’s suffering from the same problem The Legend of Korra had if they weren’t sure about getting subsequent seasons.

Personally, I am very much hoping for more seasons. I totally hear your criticisms and agree with many of them (except the soundtrack. I actually loved the soundtrack). Despite having some weak points, I still found the show extremely endearing.

Thanks for continuing the watch alongs on Patreon, despite the low viewership on YouTube! I feel like had this dropped in summer, it would have faired better with audiences, overall.

While not perfect, I think this show sticks the landing. I really hope that it gets a season 2. I need to see more adventures with this team. I think Adam kinda gave up in it early on, Jay enjoyed it but think he was effected by how Adam was feeling. Thanks for continuing to post these.

On the bright side the last two episodes soared in ratings so there is a better chance of another season! This show is fantastic!

I enjoy all your reactions, you are the duo that I often think "How will they react" while enjoying a show. The Willow movie is a childhood classic for me, but I know it's not perfect. I was going through similar struggles on this show. The modern music and some of the dialogue took me out of it, but I enjoyed the new characters, the main actors are good fits and when they did bring back the classic soundtrack I got the goosebumps. I hope they do another season and hopefully continue to incorporate Val as best they can. This season was far from perfect, but another season could build off of it well like a snowball rolling downhill.

Adam especially, fell victim to what a lot of other reactors did. He forget what a mess the Willow movie was. His rose tinted glasses of nostalgia allowed him to forget all the random shit that happens without any explanation. I loved the show just as much as you did and I honestly think that Jay would have enjoyed the show more had Adam not lost total faith in the show.

HQB

That’s really funny considering Adam was made that not enough of the plot lines were resolved.

HQB

Adam at the end “YOU CAN’T GIVE US ANYTHING TO LOOK FORWARD TO! EVERY QUESTION MUST BE ANSWERED I WILL SETTLE FOR NOTHING LESS” like Jesus they have to leave some stuff for next season. Even if they don’t end up getting a season 2, there has to be some stuff left hanging.

HQB

I already posted. I’m not going on with this show. I’m bored, the characters drove me nuts. And I love fantasy. The modern music element sucked. The plot lines just dropped or resolved too fast (Jade), the Arik and Graydon surprise twist of turning evil was dumb

yeah i wanted so bad to love this show. It has all the right pieces. its fun at times, moves along great. started off quickly. But it was missing that rare piece we find in the great ones. Its just not well crafted. It needed a better director or possibly producer and director. The actors did the best they could and the writing wasn't the problem here. It just wasn't crafted well.

You are consistently breaking my heart with your reactions to this show. I fell in love with you guys when I discovered your reactions to The Mandalorian, which led me to your reactions Tales of the Jedi, which led me to your reactions to MCU stuff, etc. And your unbridled passion and unfettered joy at the crazy twists and character fakeouts and fan service bits…that was all just a treasure to me. So I simply don’t understand why you guys seem to be struggling with some of the things you’re struggling with on this show. The cliffhanger endings all played, to me at least, EXACTLY the way cliffhanger endings should. I never felt like an episode should have continued into the resolution of the cliffhanger. Nitpicking the leap of faith off the edge of the world like you’re Neil DeGrasse Tyson utterly misses the fact that this is magic and fantasy. Them falling through the hypnotic colored light show instead of the crushing, bone breaking mists of the waterfall to end all waterfalls should have been a clue that this scene wasn’t to be taken literally. I doubt they could have gotten to the edge of the Immemorial City and looked back and actually SEEN a gigantic waterfall rising into the sky. It wasn’t literally, physically there. Us not getting to see Boorman actually fight the final three Gales at the end was part of the joke. We were meant to be rejoicing in the girl power of Kit and Elora, and cutting away to watch Boorman swing his sword like a badass would’ve been fun, but we’ve seen him do that a lot already, and it would have distracted from the girl power moments. Plus, he cracked a joke about “who brought the butter,” and when he pops back up at the end he’s covered in some kind of slime, or…butter? It’s just a joke. I guess where I’m going with this is that the show isn’t perfect. It most definitely has some pacing issues, and some of the dialogue writing really needed to be run through a few more drafts. But the things I’m most often hearing as complaints about the show…I just don’t get it. This is goofy, lighthearted high fantasy, meant to follow in the footsteps of a tremendously goofy, lighthearted ‘80s high fantasy film. And it does that brilliantly, without taking any of what it’s doing too seriously. I thoroughly enjoyed it from front to back, and can’t wait for the second and third volumes.
