House of the Dragon S1E05 Watch Along

Hey Peaches! Hey....Yo, this episode. Everything was kinda going ok...well except everyone seemingly toying with Alicent and advising her to not to do the one thing she should.  And then bam, right in the kisser. Does anyone get married in Westeros normally? Wooo, this episode takes a turn.

House of the Dragon S1E05 Watch Along

Comments

Jay, Adam's right that where y'all are relative to the HBO banner schtkkk really is the most important info. HBO via Hulu has pod info and is usually different than your time code, so I switched to HBO Max on my browser. On desktop, the timecode for start on this ep on HBO Max is 1:07. None of the services seem to be lining up so moments in the actual playback are what we need to sync with the watchalong. <3

For the record, the HBO "pfschoot" is at 00:30 on Crave, not 1:47 or 1:49

Aaron Bland

AGREED! I watch the new episodes when they air then, the following week, watch these watch alongs for last week's episode as a sort of re-cap/pre-drink for the new episode!

Aaron Bland

We Canadian's have to watch HotD on "Crave" because HBO doesn't exist and/or have broadcasting rights here, so I appreciate Adam's over-explaination of the time code!

Aaron Bland

so Jay you are right about the opening sequence. There is more blood. It’s not blood just for deaths. This whole show is about Tagaryan blood lines. As new kids are born, they add blood lines to the open. Each symbol represents a house and the heirs are blood that flows from the symbols. I don’t know if the main River of blood increases. Would have to compare back to the 1st episode

Trish Murphy

Im happy I watched the episode before rewatching with you guys. I love your humor and the whole Top Gun dragon thing was great but you missed important political dialogue. You missed the whole meaning of the queen wearing green. You might want to rewatch it before the next episode

The real villain of this series is the patriarchy. Alicent and Rhaenyra are forced to its whim, and Alicent is bitter that Rhaenyra can do everything she can to rebel against it + duty and explore sexual liberties while A is trying to play the game under its oppression. (Also, the sexual tapestries “hanging over her head” is definitely not just a fun decor decision.) Also I swear they had feelings for eachother, so it’s another layer of bitterness.

Eileen Hinman

Yeah I mentioned last week. They didn’t see my comment then. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Nice

the click was 2 seconds early for me LOL. what a mess. maybe for the future too help us peaches sync with problematic files like these. maybe add a very short (maybe about 5sec) video clip about ever 5 or 10 minutes to the patreon watchallong. even if there is no sound (which seems to be more work?) it would help us come back in if we have to stop or vimeo prefers to buffer again :)

Jerome Engel

Also she's mad at Viserys, who canned Otto for saying Rhaenyra did the deed but then still sent the tea to his daughter anyway. I think being without her dad made her feel very alone and unprotected, so now she's making allies.

Bethlee Swanson

Oh I NAILED my click on the first go. Perfect sync baybaaay :]

Jenna Antonelli

Jay is right, there is more blood in the intro, when a new offspring is born, there are more "blood lines" in the intro coming from that person's sigil.

LogicSequence

It shows a weak character in Criston Cole to ask Rhaenyra to give up a kingdom to make him feel better about breaking his chastity vows. He loses his mind after a one night stand & kills a man out of anger. I felt like they were building him up to be something more than what he became.

Kimi

As I see it, Alicent chose Rhaenyra (or her own neutral stance) over her father's goal before, but the king is dying, her father is ordered to leave and she has to decide to trust Rhaenyra with the lives of herself and her children or to start her own game while it's not too late. But Rhaenyra lied to her, so how can Alicent trust her enough? She can't, so she begins to gather allies.

Ana Statina

Concerning Dragon Top Gun: There is a book series entitled "The Temeraire series" It's fantastic! It begins during and within the Napoleonic Wars. There is Land and Sea Military as normal but also Airborne Military aka Dragons. Lots of them. Main characters are a captain and his mount. Peter Jackson actually held the movie rights for several years but the contract unfortunately expired during the LOTR/Hobbit business. I'm still hoping one day it happens.

Tavinnea Inriathan

Alicent coming in wearing the green dress (also the color of her house banners) is symbolic of her now standing on her own, and against Rhaenyra.

Randy Gibbons

Fair point. But we all know what happens at these weddings. Violence is the main event.

Will Whiton

I get that but i still think they could have handled it a bit better. maybe instead have Joffrey confront Criston in some empty hallway or garden and he gets killed then

Austin Arminio

Yeah if there’s a wedding in GOT you can pretty much expect bad things to happen. I think this one will be called the green wedding.

Joey (Hustlemando)

Like Jay, I initially wondered how Criston could just walk away after hulk-smashing that guy's face. However, as a member of the Kingsguard and personal protector of Rhaenyra, he probably isn't subject to detainment unless the king commands it. Also, the guy he killed wasn't a noble/royal so his death probably didn't matter to the fancy folks. They couldn't even be bothered to clean up his face pulp after they dragged him out.

Will Whiton

"Talk to your friends Alicent!" Last time she tried that, her friend lied to her face after swearing on her mother's memory about what happened with Daemon.

Andrew David Plehn

Alicent is mad that Rhaenyra lied to her, swearing on her mothers name, that she did not get her freak on. That led directly to her father's downfall.
