Rings of Power S1E02 Watch Along

Hey Peaches! We've heard of people swimming long distances like the English Channel, but how about an elf swimming the length of the Atlantic? I think Galadriel belongs on Team Vengeance, and she's a welcome addition. Meanwhile, mysteries abound. Who or what is digging under the towns of men? Who is the stranger that fell from the stars? And why didn't Elrond go to Durin's wedding? But also, an elf and a dwarf are best friends and it's wonderful. More of that please.

Rings of Power S1E02 Watch Along

Comments

Adam is on point! My husband and I needed the recap!! We're re-watching the series with the watch alongs, and it has been months since we first went through the series. Also, we aren't able to watch the episodes back to back, so it's often weeks between eps for us, so the recap is GREAT

Here for this LOTR content! Don't care what anyone says, I'm loving it so far.

Keep up the good work ... you work so hard to keep us entertained and smiling. You warm our hearts.

I love the little recap. It’s not too long and puts us all on the same page. “Where we last left xyz…” please keep it. I love how it usually makes me laugh. Your phrasing can be quite funny. More of the same is my vote ✌️

Could be Mithril, or the Dwarven Rings have already been crafted. It's definitely not the Arkenstone as that was the heart of Erebor, which wasn't even settled at this time. Erebor (The Lonely Mountain) would only be settled after the fall of Kahzad Dum I believe.

John Smithe

Yes, I completely agree and think this is where they discover Mithril.

Brett Coon

I bet it's Mithril in the box. The dwarves delved too greedily and too deep.

Also, i agree, recaps are great before starting the show. The viewer doesn't necessarily have the previous episode fresh in their heads since it could be a long time since someone else finds these videos.

Episode 2 was stronger than the first for me, the setup was out of the way and we got to flesh out more characters and progress the story. I think the stranger being gandalf-like might be a misdirect. In Ep1 they established that things that are so evil fire gives off no warmth, Nori at the beginning of Ep 2 wasn't burned by the fire....it too gave off no warmth, so perhaps they're in the presence of some strong evil. Also Gandalf was like the last wizard to arrive in the 3rd age. Honestly I'm happy not knowing who it is, Gandalf, Sauromon, some other wizard good or bad, the mystery is part of the fun.

In one of the Reddit threads, someone said that - given the distance - wouldn't it be funny if Galadriel spent the entire first season swimming back to Middle Earth. Each episode would have several shots of her swimming interspersed with the other story lines. So when Ep 2 opened with a shot of Galadriel swimming, I literally lol'd. 😁

Kristen

Oh yes, oops. Should have said Gandalf didn’t originally have one. My bad. 😁😁

Sarah

I agree with you on your points. I think the writers are drawing parallels to the LOTR and Hobbit trilogies to make us think we're seeing certain things when they're actually something else entirely. One of the blue wizards would make sense, but also given the stone vs. ship thing from ep 1, it makes me suspect he could be something related to Sauron.

Bethlee Swanson

I think it's a matter of these two first episodes being all setup and no resolution. Which makes sense for a TV show. But these 2 episodes are as long as one of the movies basically. So I can understand people feeling like it's slow or not going anywhere yet. But pretty much all of these 2 episodes were the inciting incident for the entire season

Andrea Piersanti

I don't believe Meteor Man is Gandalf. Maybe one of the Blue Wizards, as they came to Middle Earth in the Second Age. Gandalf, Radagast and Saruman only arrive in the Third Age. However who knows if they decided to change the timing of that for the show. As for the Glowy Dwarven thing? It's not the Arkenstone as that was found much later in the Lonely Mountain. This being Kazad-Dum (Moria) it is most likely the very first time that the Dwarves have discovered Mithril. And it being such an incredible metal, it stands to reason that they would view Elrond's arrival and timing with suspicion.

Andrea Piersanti

Gandalf did have a ring. He was given the Ring Narya by Cirdan (he was Gil-Galad's lieutenant) to aid him in his quest to defeat Sauron. Narya gives its bearer resistance to the wear of time and also allows those around it to resist the influence of tyranny.

Andrea Piersanti

Thing to note is that Celebrimbor is the forger of the rings of power. And the forge being attempted to be built is likely for that. I was thinking that for ep 1 Jay suggested he was a hobbit and Adam is an Elf (Elf Lord!), but honestly the dwarf - elf dynamic between Durin and Elrond as well as Gimli and Legolas is far more the Jay and Adam vibe. I could totally see you two going up that lift and having that conversation if things went wonky between you, which I really hope doesn't. I know y'all were disappointed it wasn't a drinking contest. Alas for dwarves, getting stoned and smashing means something different. But we establish in this episode a couple things, 1) Celebrimbor may be a master of forging towers and rings etc, but 2) Elrond as a diplomat is a master of forging fellowship, and 3) The lack of railing in dwarven construction and the focusing of sunlight beams seems to suggest that the architects of the Empire in Star Wars are descendants or ancestors of dwarves in a galaxy far far away. Not that it matters, but y'all aren't the only ones to recap things, Cruel Blind Wave does it as well as the Normies (sorry, I am seeing other people too; replayers gotta replay). The other advantage of the recap is it reminds us what you don't know and what you think is to come (as well as your repartee ahead of the show). If you think of Squid Game and knowing what you know of 001's character arc, the recap in retrospect reminds us of how blindly or not you are walking into the twists in that character and how innocent we all were until we weren't. I'd argue that is critical to an enjoyment of a reaction video as it makes twists even twistier. Also, who knows how long we go between viewings of a show and reactions, its good to have the "previously on ...". But Jay is right in that it was a funny thought especially given how long y'all have been doing this, and within a day of the shows release and watching the second reaction video immediately after the first.

Arthur Clifford

When you release weekly like normal, its nice having the recap to remind everyone what you thought. Also allows some time to pass before giving some additional opinions that might not have come immediately after watching.

Gio

I know its something amazon like to do when they release a series but because of how you felt about the first one probably goes to why they released 2 episodes at once because it all works so much better when watching them both

Gazille

Jay is correct, they are Rings of POWER! Galadriel had the ring of water I believe. And Gandalf did not have a ring. Elrond also had one though I’m not sure which (my Tolkien powers are weaker than they should be lol) Each ring does have a specific power

Sarah

I've waited so long for a thriving Dwarven fortress city to be presented on the screen, and this was magnificently done here. We catch glimpses in The Hobbit films, but it doesn't compare to the walk-through this show gave us. I can honestly say I was actually tearing up a bit on first - and second - watch. I just hope we can spend some more time in Khazad-dum. I'm enjoying the rest of the content, too. But that's something I've been wanting for a long time, and to see it presented so well, it cheers my stony heart.

John Palb

I liked this episode better than the first one, and I liked the first episode better after watching this one. The first episode just felt...disjointed, maybe? Not sure the word I'm looking for. But this looks like it's going to be a lot of fun to watch.

Kristen

I always play dwarves when they are a choice in videogames (like Dragon Age). This episode made me so happy to see one of their cities and a true friendship between an elf and a dwarf.
