House of the Dragon S1E02 Watch Along

Hey Peaches! We're back in Westeros. Crabs are sailing the high seas. Dragons are fighting with each other. Sea Snakes are making offers.  This show started so well that it just got renewed for a second season.  So nows the time for pieces to start moving around the board and the players to make some bold decisions. And this episode delivers.

House of the Dragon S1E02 Watch Along

Comments

cooperations are making it so hard to be honest sometimes. the german streaming provider that offers hbo shows streams it in 1.05 speed for whatever reason. it is the most annoying experience ever when you want to watch it with reactions 😭

Ikomena

Otto, The Hand, is a twat that is up to some conniving f*ckery. He's covertly PIMPING his daughter to the distraught king in order to court favor. "Perhaps you could wear one of your mother's dresses".... I need Daemon to slit his throat.

Sergio

I agree, they totally could have aged people up like in the first series and it would have been no less compelling. I get that they're really trying to drive home the fact that this show is aware how misogynistic and horrible Westeros is to women. We get it. But seeing an aged up from the books Sansa be 18 and forced to marry someone was still horrifically cringey, we didn't need her to be 12 for that. Gross af and also feeding a section of society that is super not okay to give media content to. That kid actress is probably gonna get targeted and that is NOT okay, show. Not okay. And it really spoils an otherwise interesting episode with cool interactions with dragons. Knock it TF off, HBO.

I think whoever you are hearing that from is very, very wrong. Or we watch much different reactors. This is a solid show and you are letting yourself miss out!

Gail Ferguson

As far as the prophecy goes, we dont know how it ends. We saw two dumbasses try to cobble together a story so they could make Disney bucks. HOTD is a prequel to the books, an adaptation of a history, and at most a prequel to the first 4 seasons of the show. Nothing done after GRRM left the show should be considered canon. A lot of those things in later seasons may happen in the books, but for the most part, we dont know.

Nimo-the-Red

I imagined dragons smelled like snakes with an added smokiness sometimes. So not a particularly pleasant smell.

Nimo-the-Red

Not having seen any of these, I only know what I have heard from other reactors. I've been hearing that this show started with a bang, but then the writing dipped in this one ... also that the third episode is even worse ... this was coming from someone who was a massive fan of the franchise ... and feels it may be turning in to a mediocre cash grab ... what do y'all think.

Not exactly sure what Alicent's age is supposed to be at the moment, but the actress who plays her is 19. In the book, there's a nine year difference between her and Rhaenyra. But I think they tightened it up a bit for this version. I'd put her 18-20.

Seth Bledsoe

Another thing to keep in mind, prophecies are not infallible.

Seth Bledsoe

Otto only wanted Rhaenyra as heir as a placeholder until he could finagle his daughter in to start squeezing out a boy or two. He knows full well the realm would not want a woman on the Iron Throne. And unfortunately he's starting to realize that Rhaenyra won't be easily manipulated or dismissed.

LordoftheFort

Or when he's not actively undermining any effort to appease or ally with an estranged major house whose naval power/wealth the realm relies on.

Chris

Gonna be real, I don't see any reason so far to really think Otto is acting with the best interests of the realm entirely or even primarily. About the only thing you could point to is his opposition to Daemon but a) that dude is an obvious problem that everyone seems aware of and b) their opposition appears deeply personal which makes it hard to believe he's solely doing it for altruistic reasons. Beyond that, everything he's done has been entirely oriented in his own interests and and maintaining his influence. He's spent 6 months selling his daughter even though doing so requires undercutting a major house that is in danger of drifting from the throne. He actively undermined that house's efforts to tie itself directly to the throne in favor of his daughter. He seems pretty intent on blocking any effort to actually deal with the Crabfeeder problem. Based on this episode it seems clear he only backed Rhaenyra to get rid of Daemon and has immediately gone towards trying to sideline HER now too, even though that is CLEARLY not in the realm's best long term interests. I can almost guarantee that if Alicent lives to be married and has children he'll immediately try to cut out Rhaenyra entirely. Dude just seems like he's exactly as much of a snake as everyone else, which the possible except of Daemon himself.

Chris

Otto would never defect. He both DESPISES Daemon, and it was Otto's idea to make Rhaenyra heir in the first place

I love Dr. Daemon …Matt Smith is phenomenal in this show. He’s equal parts charming and menacing.

Kimi

So far I like each episode of this show more the more I think about it. Character dynamics are so juicy

Re the prophecy - it seems like a big theme of the show/Targaryens in general is the danger of following prophecy/dreams at the expense of all else - sometimes wrong or mis-interpreted one. In the first ep, the King foresaw the Queen giving birth to a baby boy "already wearing a crown" - the Queen immediately interpreted this as a painful birth, the King didn't. Choices were made based on the King's interpretation. The King was wrong. I think similarly, this might be showing us how the Targaryens 100% truly believing that they have to be on the throne to protect people in the future will affect their actions and motivations and contribute to both in-breeding to keep the dragon-rider bloodline strong and their overall madness. Also saw something I liked which is that GRRM could just say that this show is a prequel to the books, not the GOT show - I'm basically not considering S7/S8 of the GOT show as cannon anymore and letting this show play out without "knowing" how the Long Night ends like the characters in HOTD do, and I'm really invested and interested (in the characters themselves and how the prophecy/prophetic dreams in general affect their actions and motivations, not the prophecy itself).

Aly

Well... tag team Hell in a Dragon Cell match, forthcoming. Daemon and Corlys, vs Viserys and Otto. With Rhaenyra as guest referee.

Jayskull

isnt fun how the Lizard from Spiderman now is OTTO HIGHTOWER... i realized that this episode

Sofia Stenström

I love how ironically, Rhys Ifans (who played Lizard) is playing a character named Otto

Luna Ulloa

what i love about daemon, especially seeing how he’s been portrayed by otto is that he makes his intentions known. he told his king what he did. right or wrong he took ownership. he also respects his niece… way more than his brother heh

Connie Tsang

Dragons smell like dragon poo and burnt corpses, duh. I find it really funny how much subtext Jay is missing about characters like Otto Hightower, who he thinks is a real great guy. Yeah sure he is, when he's not pushing his extremely nervous teenage daughter to seduce the king so he can get more power, even if it starts a war.

Bethlee Swanson

Dragons smell like smoked brisket. Also, sadly, the US still has child brides. It's hard to fight since it conflicts with religion and state laws but there is an overlap of sex trafficking - that could be a way to combat it.

B034n76

If they ever do a show about Aegon the Conqueror, knowing about the prophecy might make his life and conquest more meaningful. I see y'alls point though.

Tace Sullivan

Dragons smell like unripe mango. Prove me wrong.

SO JAZZED been waiting all day! The prophecy just said that a Targaryen has to be there to "unite" everyone... so yeah! Adam is correct! It also doesn't really "matter" for this storyline though so Jay is also correct haha. I think they just popped it in there for funsies kinda. [insert shrug emoji]

Jashana

Been refreshing all day waiting for this. Lets do this!
