Norwegian here. We too have similar traditions, very important for most students (although celebrations here are out of hand now, but that's a different issue)

And sorry, I have to add one more thing: Henry is completely different from Wille. Henry is deeply immersed in queer pop culture; he devours it and identifies with it. So, it's not that absurd for him to become a "gay landmark" (love that part in the book). Wille, on the other hand, just wants peace and quiet.
Oh, and by the way: there's almost a 10-year age difference between them, which also makes a difference.

Thank you for this wonderful reaction! One thing is very important to me to point out. Wille doesnât want to be a âflagâ for pride because he doesnât want to be in the spotlight. Therefore, I think he consciously chooses not to affiliate with an organization close to him because that would open him up too much. He also tells Simon he doesn't understand why he enjoys singing because it opens him up, makes him vulnerable, and he could never do that.
I don't think it's so much about the label. It's about not wanting to reveal too much about himself to the public. And well, he's been conditioned that way his whole life too.

Loved this episode!! But I donât understand why there isnât more support for the striking teenagers. I understand that they are privileged and spoiled and being punished. But that school needing to change is a product of society not an isolated issue that these restrictions will take care of. I mean, they have their phones (personal property) taken away for most of the day, their extracurriculars were cancelled, they have very early curfews (even if they are legal adults) where they canât even go outside, and even their big events were cancelled. I feel like I would support any group of teenagers who fight for their freedoms in this situation⌠whether they are spoiled or not. I know they are being punished and that Vincent was initially a jerk about demonstrating⌠but they are literally having food/hunger be used as a weapon against them. I understand theyâve probably never had to worry about food insecurity before but that is still not ok. Why are we not rooting for them just because theyâre spoiled? Hopefully they will learned something real but even if they donât, I absolutely support them standing up for themselves!!

Amazing reaction as always! Can't wait for the next! I think part of this doesn't translate well: graduation from upper secondary school is a very big deal in Sweden. Everyone wears a version of that cap, almost every person has one, you save it and write messages in them - and even those who fail exams or get bad grades get to graduate and be part of the celebration (although that wasn't the case when the tradition started in the 1800s). It's like an old tradition (which this show is so good at problematising in general) in ALL schools, not just rich ppl schools, to celebrate from April/May until early June when graduations happen. Exact traditions vary between the schools, we did dances and parades and other stuff, but it's not dependent of class or heritage or whatever. During covid when students couldn't celebrate or gather at all, there was a lot of sympathy from older generations, since this is such an important all encompassing thing that almost everyone in the country gets to do. A real rite of passage into adulthood. So yes, these fictional rich students are being silly about their phones and not getting food for half a day, but as a Swede I totally understand the sadness and worry around missing out on graduation and some of the traditions that come with it. It's just such a big deal. However, being a rich spoiled kid probably does make it so much worse since then you're not used to being denied anything đ

Iâm from Canada. And I just rechecked it still says piss person, even with my vpn changed to Sweden or Canada. (I could maybe try the uk or USA) but the English audio dubbing also uses piss person. What does the audio dubbing do for version that has it as shitty person? The challenge with this particular phrase is piss person is the literal translation. Google translate would say the same thing, even if the feeling or intention doesnât exactly align.

I'm in the US and I'm thinking they updated the translations after the initial release. I rewatched the season earlier this week and noticed several differences like the "piss person" that is was when I watched right after release and the 2nd time through when it was "shitty person". So I think it's more of a timing thing... but đ¤ˇââď¸ why

I think the way Omar delivers the line "you learn from me?" Is fabulous. Shows Simon's humility about his own intelligence and maybe shows that he still finds it surprising that Wille loves him.

I wondered that aswell. Why would you translate it to english twice if it's the same streaming platform? If it was BBC and the equivalent Canadian channel that bought the rights to the show I guess that would make sense but this just seems like a waste of time and money.

im glad you mentioned that it was nice that vincents problem is not simon is gay but something else, during an interview edvin (wille) and others expressed that the whole thing abt yr is that their sexuality was not the main âconflictâ of the series, there are other problems and issues they tackle more which is nice as you mentioned

I don't know if there are other Canadians here but I assume it's a north american thing overall - has anyone noticed the translation is often slightly different? Like on Netflix Canada they didn't translate it to piss person, it was shitty person. And there are lots of other subtle differences like that. I wonder why.

I donât think either of them knew at all what they were getting into by coming out on a public stage. As much as we love it when public figures are out and proud and have reached a point where they can stand up for themselves and others in this community, itâs so much easier said than done. Clearly neither of them were ready to face this and fair enough theyâre only 16

You guys and the cake are really cracking me up. It makes me think of RWRB and cake. Also a number of years ago there was a show called Shadowhunters on FreeForm here in the states. There was a gay couple on there that really caught the publicâs attention. The actors playing the roles started talking about cake in one of their interviews and it seemed to become like an in-joke with cake. What is with all the cake?

Yes, definitely. Interesting image in season 2, a kind of foreshadowing, when Willeâs snow globe of the frog prince shatters when heâs wrestling in his room with Malin as she tries to force him to leave the school on the Queenâs orders. And it was Erik who gave it to him. Simon pokes his fingers inside it in episode 5 of season 2, without cutting himself and touches the frog prince through the broken glass, suggesting that only he can touch Wille and really reach him. I am in awe of all the fabulous, layered symbolism in Young Royals. Such brilliant writing.

In the scene where August is talking about hunger, Malte and Omar's acting is so fantastic. Despite Simon hating August, there is a level of real concern on his face when he tells August it sounds like an eating disorder. Then August and the guys laugh it off, but right afterwards the expression on August's face changes. It shows that he actually listened to what Simon was saying and deep down knew that he wasn't just saying it to be mean. Malte and Omar are the types of actors that can say nothing and tell everything with their expressions. The emotional layers of that scene, and really the show in general, are impressive.

Unfortunately people who experience personal trauma do not automatically become more sensitive to other peopleâs problems. Oftentimes folks who are exposed to trauma become desensitized and they turn around and create trauma for others. Abused kids can become abusers, soldiers can become war criminals.

Thanks for uploading this episode so quickly! This episode so jam packed! Lots of important moments that stood out for me but I will hold my thoughts as to not spoil anything.
I will however throw this funny tidbit out there since there was so much drama in this episode. There was a Q&A with some of the cast at a Netflix event where Omar said during the protest scene where everyone was starving, Simon and Wille were supposed to share the lollipop right in front of Henry. But, at the time of filming Omar had a cold so Edvin didnât want to get sick. There were 2 lollipops and Omar was to discreetly switch them back and forth from a hidden cup in his lap but it became too difficult to do so they cut it. The video of this Q&A is on Netflix Nordic YouTube channel if you want to check it out.

Thanks for getting this reaction out so quickly. We have seen hints of August's eating disorder throughout the three seasons and his poor mental health.
A note about the ages of the characters. They are all at upper high school which is 16 to 19. Everyone in the 1st year is either 17 already or will be 17 by December. Everyone in the 3rd year is 19 or will be 19 by December. Sarah is 18 already and should be in the 2nd year but had to repeat a year.
I think Simon is desperately trying to make the relationship work but is loosing himself in the process. Willhelm is trying to be the perfect Crown Prince to live up to the idealised image he had of Eric and he is worried about his mum's health and thinks he needs to not cause stress for her. In fact he is trying to be someone he isn't. He has never wanted to be Crown Prince but he is trying to make his family happy. Simon has never been in favour of the monarchy.
The principal had to give in to some of the students demands because they have privilege and influence in society. It is a comment on the structure of society instead of using thier privilege and collective bargaining power for good they use it for selfish reasons.

I think Malte is such a fine actor. Whatever spiteful impulse drove him to tell Wille about Erikâs involvement in the initiation, in doing so, heâs remembering and reliving it to some extent and Malte shows us that, in the way he speaks about it and in his eyes. Weâre gradually seeing the damaged person behind the insensitive monster we might have thought he was in season 1. Not only did he lose his father to suicide, he has a cold relationship with his mother and stepfather and financial pressures within his family. His eating disorder has been hinted at since season 1, in the compulsive working out, the pinching of non-existent fat around his stomach, the munching on a solitary lettuce leaf at the beginning of season 2âŚand this latest revelation that he and Nils too, as they are both third years, were subjected to a demeaning and terrifying initiation goes a long way toward filling out the real, traumatised individual behind the character we all love to hate. Of course, this should have made him keen to protect Wille from trauma, not subject him to it by posting the video, but itâs so true that often damaged people inflict more damage, on themselves as well as on those around them. Thereâs still time for more developments within an August redemption arc and Lisa has said more than once, there are no completely good or bad characters in Young Royals, only good and bad choices and decisions. As for Wille, heâs been remembering Erik as everything a brother should be- loving, supportive, capable⌠but although finding out what a flawed person he was is probably going to push Wille to the limits of endurance, itâs perhaps also necessary in that heâs no longer the perfect previous Crown Prince whom Wille could never live up to.

I'm seeing big parallels between Wille & Isak in this episode. He's clear about his feelings for Simon, and he's ok with people knowing about it, but not ready, willing or perhaps able to put a label on those feelings, or be seen to fight for the right to have them. Where the Hell is Eskild when we need him?! đ
Jacqueline Hahn

hereâs the thing about what Wille said I think honestly heâs been a symbol his whole life and he doesnât want his relationship to make him become a symbol again. I think he just really wishes for to have something for himself

Malte is such a standout this year as August. The character could have been a caricature but he is layered and complicated. The trauma that he experienced is why he reacts to certain situations the way he does. That is not an excuse but it is an explanation and it is just so well played. The look on his face as he is recounting the initiation is so good.

I second that! Itâs a really interesting and often moving look behind the scenes and reinforces what a fantastic show this is and what an amazing cast they have been for all three seasons, perhaps especially this one. Remembering that Edvin was only 17 when he was cast as Wille and met Omar about a couple of minutes before they went straight into a scene together because Omar was 5 minutes late makes their superb chemistry all the more remarkable.
Ruth May

I feel like Wilhelm and us as viewers are meant to know, that Eric wasn't as perfect as he/we might have thought, and maybe not to be put on a piedestal, like he might have been. So at some point August is just telling the truth about a horrible experience he and his classmates went through, but at the same time it feels a little like August wanted in that moment to hit him where it hurt about his dear brother that he so looked up to or make him face the reality of it. And now he is going to doubt, if Eric really would have accepted him coming out, and thats hard. It also feels like Sara still somehow has feelings for August, but she just can't be with him after what he did, he is not completely forgiven, and will he ever be? But she can see that he is trying and repending, and that might be a start at least, but she'd rather be on good terms with Felice and Simon, and after what Simon and Wilhelm have been through, I don't think she wants a life like that in the spotlight either, that she would have, if she dated August, because if anything happened to Wilhelm or he abdicated, he would be the next king.

I remember when our Young Royals in the UK started their Mental Health Foundation: Will, Kate and Harry - and they were vocal about their own struggles with mental health and grief after Diana died. The PR was great for them at the time. Fast forward a few years and one if their members is on need of actual mental health support for his wife and the monarchy is found lacking. So, there's that. Trying to change hearts and minds from within the monarchy, even when there're three of you creating a foundation together isn't quite simple.
But, the effort has to be made, I think. And I think the three royals were really inspiring at the time.

Henry in RWRB is also not the Prince of Wales (no matter how much that novel says he is!) -he's NOT the heir to the throne, his older brother is. Here Wille is the heir to the throne so he is further restricted in his affiliations than Henry is. Plus Henry is nearly 10 years older than Wilhelm and has had time to reconcile with his lgbtq identity for longer.

one of the craziest things i find about the revelation at the end of this episode is that while you feel extremely sorry for august; and realise that he has some trauma and embarrassment there, it makes his past actions even worse.
he'd spoken with nils earlier in the season about how he didnt want his involvement in the initiation with "pornography" and "two guys" made public; yet he STILL published that video of wille and simon for the entire world to see.
in retrospect (and kudos to lisa the writer), it actually makes that act by august 10x worse than it already was.. because he had his own experiences with humiliation, embarrassment linked to a "video" with "two guys." he still uploaded the video for the world to see.

thanks so much guys for reacting to another episode so quickly! :] cant wait to see your next two reactions. it'd also be great if you could react to "young royals forever" - the documentary which focuses on behind the scenes of the making of the show.
you're right in what you've said - the series has never focused on labelling wille. he hasnt labelled himself intentionally as the writers wanted it to simply be a "love story."
i felt that the one comment edvin made about "not having to advocate for all queers (sic)" reminded me a lot of skam with isak and even. specifically that moment where isak tries to distance himself from the community and eskild has that very powerful conversation with isak and puts him in his place. i feel like simon in that scene in this episode has the same thoughts ticking over in his mind as what eskild vocalised in skam.
as far as monarchies and LGBTQ+ charities - im not sure of any but havent looked into it. i do know though that sweden announced that LGBTQ+ people would not be excluded from being heirs to the throne or lose their place in the line of succession. this occurred soon after young royals season 1 aired, but i dont believe it was as a direct result of the show. there is another nordic country i believe whose monarchy has made the same statement. it is a very small step, but an important one.
