I think they changed the timing of coming out to Tao for the show, but they didn't want to lose the scenes afterwards regarding Tao not knowing. Like the bed choices and when Charlie stops Nick when they're kissing on the bed towards the end of the episode, saying - "we're going to get caught." Also, people can know they're together and kissing, but it's then an assumption that they are comfortable sleeping in the same bed. You can't assume to know where someone's comfort level is in a physical relationship.

In Year 10, my entire year (160 people) went to Berlin (I'm from Germany tho), and we were allowed to do whatever we wanted in the evenings as long as we stayed in groups and got back before 11 pm. So yes, students are sometimes just let lose haha (we were all like 15-16 at the time, so similar ages to Charlie and Nick)

Yes it's never good to out anybody, and yes saying it would be easier if she was into girls, is her not thinking about how complex it really is to be queer/devalued/deminished it, not ententional though. But I just love the fact, that she stood up for herself, because she deserves so much better.

I deleted my earlier comment; I wrote it on Saturday when I was feeling particularly low with my mental health and I think it was harsher than I intended. I should’ve been clearer, I have no issue with Imogen taking down Ben, I was all for that, I just don’t think it was necessary to mention Charlie at all. Ben was horrible to her, she absolutely deserves better and I’m glad she said as much, but it was wrong to bring Charlie into. And we know that she at least suspects that Ben isn’t straight because she asked Charlie if something had happened between them afterwards in the bathroom. In a couple episodes there’s another moment when others mention Ben and Charlie that would not have happened had Imogen not mentioned Charlie while breaking up with Ben. I can 100% guarantee that at least some of those students left that dinner and gossiped about Ben not being straight. I understand why Imogen said it, she’s naive and young, again as demonstrated by her statement a few minutes later that life would be simpler if she was into girls, ignoring the complexities of queer relationships. I just wish more reactors were pointing out that bringing Charlie into the breakup, potentially outing Ben, was not great, but slay for standing up for yourself. I think that line is an important lesson for young kids to learn. Especially since I’ve seen comments either praising Imogen for outing Ben, or saying that Nick should’ve outed Ben earlier and that he was too nice. It’s never ok to out someone, especially not a teenage boy who we know is struggling internally, no matter how vile he is.

I can’t speak for Josh and Alex but for me, I didn’t perceive it the same way. Where Isak did not make the best choices when it came to Emma, he was never an outright asshole to her in the same way Ben had been with Imogen by the time she snapped at him. Also, where Emma knew for a fact that Isak and Even were something and it was clear that Isak is not straight, Imogen has only noticed things that, from her perspective, don’t make sense. Like, why is he so invested in what Charlie is up to? Especially when Ben makes a point of saying he either doesn’t know him or barely knows him. Imogen‘s reaction is a split second reaction, we know that by the way she says maybe I shouldn’t have said it in front of everyone. Where Emma had time to think about it, knew she would at some point see him and made a decision to tell him to come out of the closet to his face in a crowded party AND shared the information around school. And obviously we knew about Ben as an audience but Ben’s behavior is a pattern, sweet talked Imogen (enough for her to think he actually cared) and then flipped the script on her once he had her. Where Charlie was not in a position where he could stand up for himself, she is and she told him some truths he needed to hear. Again, was doing it in front of everyone the best? No and she even thought it herself BUT based on how he was treating her, I get it.

Very very funny commentary. Just wanted to add that the plot point of Charlie refusing food is not new to this season. Unlike “this is the door that locks,” we have had glimpses of Charlie’s eating issues all along but they are highlighted this season as Nick notices and tries to help. Alice is building up for the trauma that will be season 3. I really enjoy your videos!

I get it, we hate Ben, Ben is an asshole, does not mean he deserved to be outed. There can’t be double standards where it’s ok if we hate the character. She should’ve left Charlie out of it.

I've always liked the dynamic between Alex and Josh, their reactions and on screen personalities both complement each other. Alex's seemingly emotional, heart on his sleeve reactions, he "want's to believe in Romance" versus Josh's cooler more level headed responses acting as a foil to the heat that Alex generates; great combination. Although I'm sure Josh "wants to believe in romance" too and he's not without his moments either 😁.

Potential spoiler alert. Referring to the yellow and blue theme; later on in the series I notice a lot of green being worn by Nick and Charlie. My theory is that as Nick and Charle's relationship develops yellow and blue now combine becoming one and when you mix the colours yellow and blue you get green. Of course I could be completely wrong and I could be reading too much into it, though there are plenty of symbols and motifs used in this show. :)

After rewatching S1, I noticed: start of episode with Charlie yellow and Nick blue backpacks; yellow and blue again throughout scene; Nick wearing jumper that Charlie wore last episode; Nick worried about being a secret again; Nick talks in French for first time; the leaves circling their joined hands; Toa giving Elle apple juice as a hopeful beginning from the way things used to be; we get the final scene from trailer “… yeah” & “you two coming? Oh you’re being gay, carry on”; group hijacking Elle and Toa’s date; Charlie’s attempt at refusing ice cream; Charlie not eating dinner (we are now seeing Charlie’s refusal to eat, he really does need help!); Nick and his 2 favourite people in a great hug; amazing talk between Nick and Tao; both sitting on bed (from teaser); Charlie’s “oh f…” at seeing hickey”(from trailer).

Harry can excuse homophobia but he draws the line at misogyny. From what the intimacy coordinator has said, they really break down the kissing scenes to almost microscopic levels so that, in his words, it actually removes any natural emotions from of the kissing. It frees the actors up to simply act. Also, to think that this time last year Kit barely knew any French 😂😂

Also, my real favorite part of this episode is Tao finally talking to Nick. I'm a sucker for friendShips and Tao has been keeping Nick at arm's length for so long (then he dares say that he thought Nick didn't like him! Kid, you threw a ball at his HEAD just a few weeks ago and he never said a word about!) and even at the beginning of this scene, Nick asked a question to get him to open up and Tao again gave a monosyllabic response for finally being like...Oh...what if I'm not a bitch to Nick for once? And it goes great. His ego even gets a nice stroking. The two of them becoming friends is really important for the stability of the friend group. related: In season 1, Tao complains to Elle that Nick is going to bring his friends over and make them all watch the Avengers on movie night. She says, "Is that your nightmare scenario? Watching a movie you hate with people you don't like very much?" But then this season there's a scene where Nick makes Charlie watch a Marvel movie and he falls asleep because it's so boring 😆

I’m on the fence about this one. Part of me feels like she did, since no one knew about Ben and Charlie except Nick. And the girl at the party did dare Charlie to kiss Ben. But there was no other major reaction to that part of her takedown, so it’s hard to know how the others interpreted it. Given that Charlie was the target of bullies, they could have assumed Ben was focused on bullying him the way Harry did in the previous season.

One of the highlights of this episode was seeing your amazed and delighted reaction to Imogen putting Ben firmly where he belongs. 😂 One of the helpful things about the exploration of Charlie’s eating disorder is that it highlights how it can also affect boys and men, rather than being a disorder that only affects girls and women. I remember that in my past experience, it was widely misunderstood as being to do with food and dieting and almost always associated with adolescent girls, rather than actually being part of the need to control and mental health issues which can affect anyone. I think this is also the first sign that while Harry is often an idiotic dick, Ben is much more toxic and dangerous to anyone who gets in his orbit: smug, sly, cold and unable or unwilling to see the effects of his actions on others.

This is the episode that I started to feel like Heartstopper is as much a love story about friendship as it is about the romances. It's so so so beautiful the way that Charlie and Nick hug Imogen - she doesn't need love from a partner in that moment.
