Progress Update Regarding Unity
Added 2023-09-16 14:21:41 +0000 UTCUnity has recently changed their ToS and announced they would begin charging $0.20 per game install for any game that generated $200k income in the last 12 months AND reached 200k lifetime installs starting January 2024. WebGL builds should not be affected by this according to an official Unity blogpost and the official Unity FAQ.
Unless we're swept up in some kind of Internet virality, this is unlikely to be a concern for us. However, we're wary about Unity completely rewriting their ToS in the name of profit. Spoken plainly, we don't trust them anymore.
After a few days of contemplation, Digital Dopamine and I have decided we will continue building our game in Unity, but we'll be building a barebones version of the game in RenPy in the case that Unity is no longer an economically sustainable option for us. As they say, you run your airplane with two engines in case one fails, haha.
