That means it actually has continuity that carries over from episode to episode (that isn't just a mere callback to a previous ep) and a continous storyline. That's why you see butters in that brace without explanation in the ep. It's from something that happened in the previous episode. The season is very good btw, it's one of the better serialized seasons, worth reacting to as a whole from beginning to end.
