Vicksburg 1891

"I have grown accustomed to the unfettered snarling for the most part. In truth, I prefer it over the initial unwillingness to acknowledge my presence altogether. The sentiment that I am a horse's ass is hardly a pleasant one, but to be regarded at all is a blessing nonetheless. Her condition has improved somewhat, though it is evident her immense pain and discomfort of the transition persists. At present, she will not allow me to approach her to examine the infection and wounds. I understand that it will take time. In due course, I trust our renewed bond will be one of resilience and mutual reliance. For now, it is best that I remain scarce, and perhaps heed her suggestion that I burn in hell."

...and Viv's abs, Ellie's... Incomprehensible wealth, the copious amount of butts... Ok maybe there's *some* sexy.

Alex Lilly

Good point. Neither Ellie's or Eli's tranformed forms could be classified as sexy. Elk "doesn't do cute". One could argue she doesn't do "sexy" either... Aside from that one panel in "Sexual Tenor", and whatever your feelings on Eli happen to be.

Alex Lilly

I really like the idea of being turned being hard to endure— your body is painfully transfiguring itself as you become a horrific parasitic monster, doomed to kill what was once your peers and now are your prey to ensure your continued survival. Even if you still walk among them, you’re forever changed both mentally and physically in ways best left unsaid. Vampirism shouldn’t be sexy!

Drannix2000

I wonder how much of that was stubbornness (not wanting to kill/spiting Eli) vs ineptitude (still learning/being bad at it)... Either way probably wasn't much of that guy left.

Alex Lilly

Oop, yep, looks like the tooth might be the catalyst like I guessed! The rot gets in, spreads, and invites with it a plethora of vermin that take root and burrow deep. But it ensures some diligent nurse with a shop vac is never bored later when Ellie needs her regular de-maggoting.

Drannix2000

Yes, yes she did, haha.

I'm assuming every transition is different given the various "variants" so yeah that must have been unexpected and a hell of a thing to deal with in the 1890s. Also I totally missed the 1899 date on the Vicksburg Hideout study the first time. Poor girl took 10 years to learn to hunt/eat?

Alex Lilly

Ellie's in particular was strenuous and prolonged, yes, complemented by a string of unusual "symptoms" Eli could not have anticipated, namely the shocking appearance of the maggots. Hell of a thing.

Caroline Catlett Gates

That eeeyyyeee. Muddled, feverish, agonized, distraught, hopeless, and that clear, determined glare could melt stone. Even with her monstrous and supernatural change, I feel like this is the real transformation she undergoes: a refusal to give in. An unquenchable drive to survive, a defiance of not writing her own story. Afterall, it is not in fire’s nature to put itself out.

Neil S

Amazing. Poor girl looks like hell. I know I may not get an answer here, but is the "transition" typically a long and painful process?

Alex Lilly

It has not, that isn't to be revealed until deep into TVD! I would never portray either event in a trivial one off, I've sat on it a long time, haha.

Caroline Catlett Gates

Not sure if I’ve missed some earlier lore, but has the story of how Ellie or Eli became - infected? - been shared? I love the prose style in these and eat each word up like a starved lamprey.

Neil

I love Eli's narration here so much. And your art is of course gorgeous, unfettered snarling never looked so good

Morgan Piper

I'm fussing with another script and haven't gotten to flipping it, haha. If y'all can forgive me this once, I may go ahead and leave it for now, lol.

Caroline Catlett Gates

In January, it was suggested she hadn't had a successful kill until 1899. She brooded and snarled for a solid decade, haha.

Caroline Catlett Gates

Didn't even notice it was horizontally flipped at first.

Colin Hale

One year later and only a step of progress, not that you can really blame Ellie. Still, progress is progress.

Moss

And the bit where he'd rather be called a horse's ass than ignored. Poor Eli. He's doing his best.

Caroline Catlett Gates

"perhaps need her suggestion that I burn in hell" is such a great line

Richard
