But it ensures some diligent nurse with a shop vac is never bored later when Ellie needs her regular de-maggoting.

Even with her monstrous and supernatural change, I feel like this is the real transformation she undergoes: a refusal to give in. An unquenchable drive to survive, a defiance of not writing her own story. Afterall, it is not in fire’s nature to put itself out.
