It's a trick I learned several years back, and I have a custom shortcut for it to cut down on reaching. Flipping gives your eyes/brain a different perspective of how the design/proportions/composition is developing, and things that otherwise would be overlooked as being correct become immediately obvious errors when it is mirrored. You'll see memes around of people rendering entire faces without flipping, only to do so at the end and find an eye miles below where it should be. Theoretically my characters should look proper in either orientation.

Why do you mirror the images when sketching? I would never have thought to do that!
