Two great old British comedy actors in this episode, Hugh Paddick and Kenneth Connor, the latter was a stalwart of the Carry On films!

The anarchist in the theatre at the beginning is played by Ben Elton, one of the writers..

This is why I could never watch 'House'. I just couldn't buy him in a dramatic role. All I could ever see was the idiot Prince plus the character he plays in Blackadder season 4.

Hahaha, that roar is ridiculous and hilarious. And then he abruptly goes to very calmly speaking. π Cool re Man vs. Bee viewing.
Thank you. That's fab re the dog's quality of life. :) Well it shows how much you love him.
Cleaning my cat's litter tray is a job I'm not a fan of, as my gf knows. The other week, I was cleaning a pretty messy tray and copied that joke from The IT Crowd when Roy is seeing a date home and is unaware he has a smear of choc dessert on his forehead. His date thinks it is something else.
After cleaning the tray in the bathroom, I said loudly before entering the room she was in.. "Omg, that was disgusting but at least it's done now."
The look of absolute shock and horror on her face for a second was priceless.
Then she realized, as we had just watched that IT Crowd ep the previous night. π

I'm thinking the same... I used to watch the show as a kid with my dad and remember it being a big part of our family life but it's nowhere near as good as I remember it.

Yeah, I agree that's the more likely option for the first half, and some have suggested *up* his drawers too, which makes sense in conjunction with the hot potato. But some people are apparently convinced it's "orchestra stalls" on the basis that it's rhyming slang for balls.

Had no clue there was ever a debate about the first part. I definitely hear βhot potato off his/its drawersβ.

An all-time top 5 episode for me, and the source of one of the great Blackadder debates: namely, whether the "Macbeth" ritual of the actors goes "hot potato, off his drawers, pluck to make amends!" or "hot potato, orchestra stalls, Puck will make amends!" Neither Richard Curtis or Ben Elton have ever clarified it, and it's rumoured that the original script just left it to the two venerable comedy actors playing those roles - Hugh Paddick and Kenneth Connor - to come up with something of their own, in which case the secret died with them.
Whatever the words were, it's a great touch that the rhythm of those lines matches the witches' chant at the beginning of Macbeth ("eye of newt and toe of frog!"). The whole idea of the Curse of Macbeth was actually invented out of thin air by the theatre critic Max Beerbohm at the end of the 19th century, purely because he hated the play, so its use here is another cheeky Blackadder anachronism, but it works so well as a vehicle to spoof both Regency theatre and thespian pretensions through the ages that you can't blame them for running with it. Absolutely top-tier comedy.

Good ep / reaction. π
I think you'd really enjoy a sitcom Rowan Atkinson / Ben Elton did called 'The Thin Blue Line', it's from the mid-90s and has 2 series. It's set in a police station and Rowan plays a by-the-books, straight-laced Inspector. He's very behind the times; over-conservative but is likeable. Another funny character in it is Inspector Grim, who is a bumbling, seething idiot. He's doesn't like people "fanny-ing about!". π

Of course there was a slight historical mistake in this episodeβ¦. The poor didnβt used to have excess children as a cheap alternative to turkey at Christmas - Goose was the bird of the masses if they had anything more extravagant than child

It was the Princeβs roar that really got him. I watched this programme from very young and the best thing was that you donβt get all the jokes and as you watch it more you slowly start getting them as you get older so itβs gift that keeps giving.
Yes we watched that Man v Bee it was very clever. There was one part that nearly made me vomit though haha . Thanks Jason Iβll give him a hug and a treat now! His quality of life is still pretty good but I do spend a lot of time cleaning up after him, if you see what I mean π₯΄π

That's heart-warming. He may like Rowan in 'Man vs. Bee', which I thought was good - the eps are very short, less than 10 mins each mostly. Rowan plays a house-sitter who goes to war with a single bee. π
Aww, poor pooch. :( I didn't know dogs could suffer from that. Give him a hug and a treat for me, please.

Actors still have that superstition about Macbeth, so they do generally say "the Scottish play" instead of the true title! I always love watching Hugh Paddick and Kenneth Connor as the camp and pretentious stage actors in this episode!
The anarchist was played by co-writer of the show, Ben Elton, who at this point in the 1980s, when the episode was made, often did standup comedy criticising the Thatcher government, so it was appropriate he went on stage to criticise the prince and the establishment!

Yes King Boomer! You are RIGHT to think this is the best Blackadder series so far...but just you wait for Blackadder Goes Forth!! One of the greatest seasons of comedy writing Britain has ever produced (in my opinion) and so far above seasons 1 & 2 that they are effectively completely different shows. You are going to love it mate!
