Apokolips has their representative for the constest, so it seems fair that New Genesis has one as well! The one and only Barda Free is here to tower over all the competition (you know, since she is 7 ft tall...).
Production notes:
The artist I used for reference for Barda is Nicola Scott from the Birds of Prey run from the end of the 90's. He didn't draw Barda very muscular but I liked the style and expressions she showed in these comics. I wanted to make Barda look excited to be participating in the contest against some of the fiercest competitors in the Marvel and DC universes and I hope her expressions do communicate that.
I based her competition bikini on the one she uses regularly when she isn't wearing armor. It might not be very original, but if it ain't broken, am I right? Another reason why I used Scott's artstyle is becuase I liked the way Barda's bikini was shaded and you'll see how good it looks in the finished version.
I had a lot of trouble drawing Barda's face so, with a little suggestion from Aron Orson, I used Lainie Kazan's photos and I can say it worked like a charm. Jack Kirby did base Barda on Lainie, so it seemed like a logical choice.
The poses, on the other hand were inspired by Natalia Kovaleva who is very well built and I emulated that at first. However, I preferred a more balanced physique for Barda and I slimed her down. I think she looks better this way and I hope you agree.
Now, in season 9 of the previously mentioned run, Barda is introduced calling her husband Scott (in the run for being the luckiest man in the DC universe) and I couldn't get that image out of my head, so I decided she would be doing the same in the backstage illustration. Could she and Mr. Miracle be planning a way to escape from Roulette and The Promoter's clutches?
As always, let me know your thoughts on this in the comments!
