Dear Ms. Jessica,
I know a lot of mutants have specially made clothes that fit their mutations. I even know of some tailors that specialize in mutant clothing. But how does this work for more extreme mutants, like level four mutants with major changes to their body? How difficult is it to find clothes when your body isn’t even human shaped anymore?
I briefly touched on mutant clothing before, but I’ll go a little bit more in-depth here.
For the most part, mutant clothes are not hard to find. This is because small alterations to basic human clothing are usually enough. Most mutants can still fit into human clothes. Those that cant sometimes need something as simple as extra arm holes, which is something any decent tailor can do. Common mutations, such as extra limbs, may be able to find pre-altered clothes at big outlet stores, simply because it’s profitable for big brands to make some clothing for common mutation body types.
However, the more drastically you mutate, the harder it is to find clothes. Most level 4 mutants can still deal with some sort of human clothing alteration, but if you can’t, there’s really only one option.
Bespoke clothing!
Honestly, this is all the rage right now anyway, so it’s just a good thing that it helps out mutants too.
Bespoke clothing is just clothing that is made specifically for you. Your measurements are given to a designer along with several pictures of your body. The designer then comes up with a design specifically for your body, sends it off to be manufactured, and then you have a piece of clothing made for you and you alone.
You might think this sounds like a lot, but we have been making clothing like this for decades! You know all those modeling shows like Paris Fashion Week? All those models are wearing bespoke clothing. All the models wear clothing specifically made for their body by a designer working specifically for them!
In fact, here’s an interesting fact. Modeling is one of the most profitable careers for mutants! There is a much, MUCH higher ratio of mutant to human models. Designers actually love the ability of making unique fashion statements meant to go with mutant bodies. It’s why you see so many mutants walking down the runway when the time comes to show off new fashion lines.
There’s only one problem. Clothing made like this is expensive. Unfortunately, there’s really no way around it. However, if you are a level four mutant on a budget, look to fashion design colleges. In fact, we have one at our own Port Solei University! The students there will design clothes for you on the cheap as part of their studies. Just know… you might get a few duds here or there. They are just students after all.
Myself, I do a lot of shopping at thrift stores. My mutation doesn’t alter my body shape that much and multi-arms are actually fairly common. So I can get buy wearing other people’s hand me downs.
Teachers don’t get paid enough to get clothing made specifically for them…
Siiiigh…
