R-AN (NorthCott) Sociological Research Domes

Inspired by Billy Longino’s recent postings and drawings for his Metamorphosis Alpha game, my own love of Gamma World, and a recent playthrough of the Old World Blues DLC for Fallout New Vegas, I present the R-AN (NorthCott) Sociological Research Domes.

I picture using this map as the starting point for a classic Gamma World campaign - where the players roll up level 1 characters with medieval level technology and equipment. But instead of the usual "coming of age" adventure...

The party members wake of one morning in their usual medieval village feeling like everything that happened up until now was something of a dream. Then they discover that they are the only living beings left, everyone else in the village has died leaving only the (3 to 6) adolescent members of the community who have been trained to defend the village against invaders, but not to fish or hunt.

Turns out they are all wearing strange headgear that allows the research AI to manipulate their visual cortex (in order to hide the fact that they live in a dome from them) and that reduces their INT stat by 1/3. With the AI crashed, it still provides the INT reduction, but no sensory overlays.

All the villagers? Well built robots / androids that trained them, raised them, and now do nothing.

It’s time to get out of this dome before the food runs out.

You can grab 300 dpi versions of this map with and without grid from the blog post at https://rpgcharacters.wordpress.com/2015/07/24/friday-map-r-an-northcott-sociological-research-domes/

R-AN (NorthCott) Sociological Research Domes

So I'm pretty excited as I'll be running an adventure based off of this map in Numenera. I'm going to have my players start out in the dome as they have spent their entire lives there believing this to be home. I'll even run a couple adventures inside the dome, first they will hunt a bear to get food for their clan, and then they will engage in a bloody battle with a rival clan who has killed their loved ones. One day the characters will hear a voice from another animal and eventually from inside their head who is trying to free them from the Dome. This will be my attempt to throw in a bit of flavor from the first 40 minutes of the first Matrix movie, the only good matrix movie. Then they will discover that all of their loved ones, and even other humans they know, are all robots disguised as humans who have been instructed to interact with them to create a believable environment. At this point, they will make their way out of the sociological dome and make their way to the control area. I have no idea what I'm going to do in the control area, I'm just going to wing it at this point. So if anyone has any ideas of what to do in the control area, please drop a suggestion. I was planning on having the beings who are running the experiment turn out to be aliens, this would be my attempt to get a little bit of an X-Files flavor in my game, which would be a recurring theme that almost seems impossible to solve and gather evidence for. After my players escape the control area, they will find themselves in an open, vast, dangerous desert of extreme temperatures. Here I'll have the players wander for a few days, dehydrated, and starving, and then I'll need to find a way to steer them into an official published adventure for Numenera called "The Nightmare Switch" Original I was going to run Nightmare Switch first, but after I saw this map, I knew that this was the greatest way to start a Numenera game. It has the perfect mixture of weird and strange. Dyson it would be great if you could do more Science Fiction type of maps, or maybe even maps of larger areas other than dungeons. I usually try to get my players to travel to three locations for each adventure I run. This is my attempt to incorporate locations as an equivalent to a three part act in a script. Keep up with the amazing maps, and sorry I had to drop my donation amount down a couple months ago, my wife was giving me grieve about it. Later I'll sneak it back up and see if she notices :)
