Instead of “thanks for your services” what can a civilian say or do to express gratitude

Comments

just being respectful, and descent as a person, would be all I would ask. If they say thank you, then I humbly say "you're welcome."

Howard D. Glockzin

“Thank you for your service” is just copypasta. Like “sorry for your loss.” It seems to me just a pat answer that they feel obligated to use. It makes me feel like I asked them to say it. But I didn’t. It’s like they’re trying to get out of the conversation without actually conversing. I always prefer when they ask something like “what was your job?” or “did you get to go overseas?” That shows interest. “Thank you for your service” feels more like an ostensibly polite evasion.
