Yosemite: Valley of Stone and Sky - El Cap Summit and Lower Yosemite Falls, Ursa Cine Immersive Experience

Update 4: Yeah I just now noticed it’s still off. Stereo distortion now which is causing discomfort on extreme angles. Might not be noticable to some but it’s unacceptable to me. San Fran full re-release target 7 days and with reworked workflow. Yosemite 1.5 weeks with reworked workflow. Redwood still trying to release on time. Third times the charm -_-; Absolutely brutal start to the new Ursa Cine content, but I never settle for less than the best. New workflow will take shorter render time and is more stable so I should be able to get the re-releases out faster. Thanks for your understanding everyone. Still able to push hard because of your support I won’t let you down. Gonna put this post to rest, will post again in a week or less with remastered San Fran.

Update 3:
Quest Part 1, 2, 3 version up now.

PCVR part 2 and 3 up now, Part 1 is 2 more days (This is also Apple version for now, ive encoded the mvhevc but the aime metadata injection isnt working as anticipated, waiting for main concept support to advise on way foward)

Working on redwood national forest experience now will take to end of first week of December likely. Will start rendering San Francisco again with correct aspect ratio etc and the new enhanced sharpness techniques used on Yosemite. This remastered San Francisco will be out in about 1.5 weeks.

Update 2:
Part 2 is up now.
Notes:
-Fixed the mini stutters every 2 seconds.
-slight exposure drift on left eye during the lower yosemite falls section before the climbing to above the waterfalls section. Almost unoticable, but I am re-rendering and will release part 2 again 1-2 days.
-Had 1-2 voiceovers not render this will be added to the part 2 rerender.
-Part 3 Targeting Friday/Saturday now.
-PCVR version will start coming 1 day after part releases as ive found a more efficient workflow. Will start with this with the part 2 rerelease.
-Didnt want to spend $1k on some UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) for all the pcs but I had to suck it up and buy some UPS. Was hit by another random seconds long power outage and set back a couple days. It happens once in a blue moon but it is devastating to the schedule so I went ahead and bought some. UPS will ensure 24/7 rendering without risk of render loss.

Schedule notes:
Got caught in the government shutdown flight cancellation wave twice. Ended up having to cancel the filming trip. Still intend to release Redwood National Park by end of month, and I will have to film another experience soon for December release. Will release more schedule details in a future post. For a preview: undecided on January, February might be NY Fashion Week, March is another College Spring Break and possibly Japan Cherry Blossom experience, April-September is Switzerland and Spain.

Update:

Part 2 coming Saturday night. Part 3 Monday/Tuesday. Apple MVHEVC a touch more delay. Good news is I’ve partnered with Main Concept (broadcast grade encoder company used by Disney, Meta, Netflix etc) to produce much higher quality than even Apple compressor. Bad news is it takes additional 2 days per part after the first three render phases. To be clear the delays aren’t because of the extra versions, it’s because I did not anticipate a workflow that is taking 4 days per part for three pcs to render all the render phases I’m doing now. Then comes the versioning after that. I messed up a couple renders being so new to the workflow so had to start over 😅 Additional quality can only be achieved with 4x more render time than my previous workflow.

Good news is that I said f it, plopped the credit card down, and bought fourth pc to dedicate to this and accelerate throughout of Apple and all other versions. Bottlenecks are being eliminated, extension cords are being used so I don’t blow my circuit breaker again with so many pcs lol. If I can get the colorspace to behave on output I’ll have MVHEVC early next week. HDR signaling needs a bit more configuration testing and I have 72 hours left to do everything I need to do before next trip, so if testing on Apple version doesn’t go perfect it will need to wait until after the trip (so another week until I can get back to perfecting MVHEVC output) I haven’t forgotten about PCVR version and it’s definitely coming by next week also.

Crunch time (it’s always crunch time it feels like lol) , San Diego city and Joshua tree national park filming begin Saturday and all of next week. With the extra fourth pc and the new workflow kinks being ironed out I will soon start pumping out the content even faster than ever before. Apologies for not being accurate with the timing, it’s still just me doing everything and there are not enough hours in the day/night.

I’ve got big plans for early next year, it will be international locations again, can’t wait to bring you the world in Ursa Cine Immersive quality. Finally, apps for all headsets are nearing completion including galaxy xr, quest 2/3, Pico and Vision Pro.

Original:

Part 1 Quest version is now live! Will get more versions and parts out soon. This one will play on all headsets and looks superb, vision pro native version will be about 2 days behind quest part releases. I will also update this post with more details tomorrow but its 2:30 AM right now so bed time lol. Please Enjoy!

I think I remember you suggesting this before :) This is a great idea, I will have to prioritize it since you have wanted to see it for a while! I’m thinking late February or late March is strong possibility.

Edwin Guerra

Thank you again for your fantastic work and please please visit the Arches National Park :)

Deldom

looking forward to part 1 pcvr version =)

Hydra Group

Thank you! 😊

I also use PCVR with Quest 3 for a smoother and higher quality playback 👍

Ralf Starke

I was thinking about you guys. Sorry you were affected by the delays and cancellations. Thanks for the updates and I am sure you will find something nice closer to home to film as you have an eye for it.

Darlene V

Thank you for bringing this to my attention and the analysis it helped me isolate the issue. It must be because I tried different fps lowering method than last time (I lower from 90 to 59.94 fps) . I went ahead and changed this for the current render and will have the mini stutter fixed for part 2. Part 2 was delayed because of a split second loss of power. Will be out tomorrow night with the mini stutter fixed and i will have part 1 rereleased and part 3 in 3 days following that.

Hello. I hesitated a little before writing this message. I was really looking forward to the Yosemite videos, and visually they are very good. I like the larger field of view and the significantly better dynamic range of the Ursa. However, while I didn't have any such problems with the videos from San Francisco, I notice that the first Yosemite video has constant mini-stutters. This means that the video stutters briefly almost exactly every 2 seconds. I have created two short clips to demonstrate this. “sample2” in particular clearly shows the problem. https://www.transfernow.net/dl/20251110exBZoaIu I deliberately kept the samples small, totaling about 16 MB, but the problem is still noticeable. I rule out a problem with the Quest 3, as the LA videos run very well and are always smooth. The problems occur with all video players I have on the Quest 3, even the previously flawless 4XVR player. However, the stuttering does NOT occur on my PC. A comparison of the bitrate and other values of LA and Yosemite videos shows no significant differences.

Image quality, especially the sharpness, is amazing in this Yosemite video. Thank you for all the improvements, it looks like it is worth the delay. Hope you continue to support PCVR through all of this - while I own a Quest 3, I still prefer PCVR for a smoother and higher quality playback.

Seems like tripod was failing. Some scenes are more affected and some not so much. I’ve switched out to different system so it won’t happen again.

Edwin Guerra

The image quality is awesome, very nice! But I also noticed a lot of "micro-shaking" in almost all scenes – at least in the first 5 minutes, after that I had to stop because I got motion sick (apparently I can handle this shaking much worse than the shakyness when you walk around in your videos). I watched some of the footage on my computer (flatscreen) and it's quite noticable there as well, e.g. between 4:25 and 4:30. Not sure if it's the tripod or some digital artifacts from postprocessing?

Florian

Thank you for your feedback. I will work to eliminate that sway and am looking into music only being in left channel. Can you please tell me which frames are bright?

Edwin Guerra

Haha you should have seen me 2 minutes earlier. I was screaming nonstop at the top of my lungs from the pain. But then like magic it kinda just stopped. Happy to see you got that height exposure it’s what I wanted to convey :D

Edwin Guerra

It’s the camera fan i think. I didn’t expect it to show up. I’ll correct that next time.

Edwin Guerra

Hi, thanks a lot for your work – it’s incredible that you carry all that equipment up the mountain! However, I have to say that I don’t think the quality (which was already really, really good) has improved further. For example, at the beginning the music only plays on the left channel. The tripod shots have a slightly distracting left-right shake, and there are occasional bright single frames flashing (seen on the Quest 3 using the DeoVR app). Still, thank you so much – keep it up!

Hoshie Entertainment

Amazing pictures. Good news is, i don't think you're allergic to wasps, or you would've probably went k.o. Some of those scenes triggered my fear of heights, so the quality is very good :P

Marcel78

i get lot of audio static using quest 3 and 4xvr link to stream to the headset on this video

Hydra Group

I can't believe you got the gear up all that climbing, so incredible thank you!!

Jay Willy

Teary eyed, so beautiful. Thank you!

Darlene V

I really want the MicroOLED headset for this. Thank you!

Evgen Noname

Absolutely incredible, it's magnificent! Thanks a lot

Deldom

Ya the quality is beyond good. I went back and watched one of your earlier vids that was light years past anyone else; and this makes that even look just ok. Not sure how you lugged everything up the side of that but it looks tiring.

Geoff Greaves

The quality is amazing, good job! Can't wait for the next chapter :D

Guillaume Simard

Well worth the wait! Great job both!

Kyle

Thanks!

Guillaume Simard

Thank you so much!
