Umamusume Season 2 Episode 10-11 Full Reaction

Remember when Twin Turbo, after watching Rice Shower beat McQueen, bragged that she'd easily beat Rice Shower? She's gassed herself up and said a lot of nonsense all season. But as it turns out... she wasn't joking this time. :) They do such a good job of making her swear empty threats all season that the Rice Shower one... and the challenge of Teio don't seem any different until it really mattered.

I agree with George's take regarding AI. A story created by an author is purposeful. The writer wants to convey something through their characters. If a character says something a certain way it is because the author decided this and in many cases the character could have easily worded a thing differently but the way the character speaks has meaning. An AI can never convey meaning. It is just a stochastic model. It's basically pure chance wether a character says line A or line B. I would never want to experience a story written by AI because it is devoid of all meaning. Even the worst self insert fan-fiction at least meant something to the writer but with AI there is nothing.

As usual really enjoyed the discussion that came up during this reaction. The point on 'Fandom' v a traditional fan base stood out. Its interesting to look back at the real careers of these horses as it shows both the best and worst of that divide. You have cases like with Rice where people have become more attached to the drama and the story and they let that bring out the worst in them. TM Opera O I think has the worst story when it comes to this, it was said he made racing boring during his time. This lead to someone throwing rocks at the horse and someone else breaking into stable to cut his mane. But on the other side you also get to see the best of fandom, as you see how many people find a connection to the stories told around these horses. And how people have used that as motivation to improve themselves. With that goodwill flowing over impacting the actual horses. Its a sad fact that a lot of race horses don't have grand lives post retirement and once they stop earning money they can be abandoned. But the growing fandom and the potential income that brings looks to have had a positive impact in the treatment of retired racehorses in Japan. With horses like Meisho Doto (TM Opero O greatest rival) becoming a symbol of the positive side of fandom thats sprung up around particular horses, as he was first used as the face of a retried race horse program to raise awareness for the difficulties they can face. To today where hes being used as the face of a fund raising campaign by his current retirement farm (Northern Lake) who need funds to rebuild an old stable.

Teio performing dogeza for Twin Turbo on the big screen in the ending credits of ep10 is such a wonderful touch. Earlier in the episode when she snaps back at Turbo, we see part of her ugly side, telling her she can't win against the strong racers. I find this to be even more impactful when you consider that up until this point, she has never remembered Turbo's name. It's not quirky anymore, it's now basically her saying Turbo's not worth remembering. And she uses that to lash out at Turbo when really, all Turbo is doing is effectively just holding up a mirror by repeating back Teio's own advice that inspired Turbo in ep5. Teio clearly doesn't like what she sees as she chooses to be mean in response. But sticking to her values, Turbo doesn't give up on Teio, and she manages to pull off the miracle that gives the final nudge that Teio needs to give it another shot. Twin Turbo became my favorite character in this episode.

I don't feel like I have a lot to add to what others have said for these episodes so I think I'll comment on something else instead. The school motto. Eclipse first, the rest nowhere. Comes from England in the early days of thoroughbred horse racing. Eclipse was born in 1764, the year of a solar eclipse, and began racing at age 5. His first race was a set of 4 one mile heats. After the first heat Dennis O'Kelly placed a bet stating the placement of all five competitors. "Eclipse first, the rest nowhere." Nowhere meaning distanced. In other words the bet was for Eclipse to come first with all other horses being behind by 240 yards. Mr. O'Kelly used his winnings to buy a half ownership in Eclipse. Eclipse was undefeated for 2 years winning 18 races total, 11 of which were King's Plates. He was eventually pulled from racing because his presence was negatively affecting the betting. His bloodline went on to have racers such as Potoooooooos, Secretariat, and Silence Sunday. Additional fun fact the Mitusbishi Eclipse is named for the racehorse not the space phenomenon.

About the comment about her holding up 3 fingers in-game (at around 26:16), it's a bit of a double reference. Since, yeah, she broke her leg three times, but it's also something Symboli Rudolf's IRL jockey Yukio Okabe did when they won the triple crown (Rudolf does it herself in the show, here's a pic of the IRL version https://en.netkeiba.com/library/image.php?id=28). He held up one finger after the Satsuki Sho, two after the Derby, and then three after the Kikuka Sho. It's why Teio holds up two fingers after winning the Derby. Which makes it even more heartbreaking that she finally gets to hold up three fingers here and it's for a very different reason.
