The Mello stuff was rushed. The second half of Death Note is actually the same length as the first half. The anime cut out a ton of stuff for Mello and Near. Additionally there is some epilogue stuff with crime going back up and Matsuda wondering if Near had actually written Mikami's name in the Death Note since he later died in prison. Also, Sayu wasn't physically crippled but suffered mental health problems from her kidnapping, which is why she was shown in a wheelchair. After Light dies, she is told Kira killed him.

It's not a coincidence that Mikami acted out and caused Light to lose. Light specifically chose Mikami because they shared similar thoughts. Mikami was TOO similar, which is why Mikami tried to kill Kiyomi at the exact same time as Light, creating an opening for Near. It's the result of Light picking someone who can act as him without proper communication.
