Episode 5, The Thread, Silent Street Corner

The movements continued—mechanical, detached.
An arm lifted, paused, lowered.
A foot slid half a step forward, then back again.
The same sequence, repeated without pause, as if the thread guiding me had forgotten there was a world beyond the pattern.

At first, the street was crowded.
Curious faces leaned in, some grinning, some filming.
But the longer it went on, the more they shifted.
The smiles thinned.
Phones lowered.
The laughter dried up.

I caught the sound of footsteps moving away—first one person, then two, then whole clusters of them, peeling off toward the side streets.
The air grew thinner with each departure.

Within minutes, the lively corner had emptied.
The distant hum of traffic returned, filling the space where voices had been.
Shadows from the streetlamps stretched longer, untouched by bodies passing through.

Still, the thread pulled.
My head turned to face the gap where the crowd had been, though my eyes saw nothing but open space.
A hand rose in a slow, deliberate arc, as if waving to no one.

By now, the corner was silent except for the faint scrape of my shoes against the pavement.
No one remained to watch.
The thread didn’t care.
The sequence continued, each motion stitched into the next, looping endlessly in the dark.
