Narrated: Portable Power Actuated Rim-driven Annular Saw [Restoration]

I think this beats the drag saw and swing saw in terms of danger.

Really enjoyed this video. What an amazing saw.

Lisa Mason

I am reminded of several Dirty Jobs episodes where Mike Rowe remarks that everything at the location can kill him.

Bradley Goodwin

Watching this for the third time. LOL. I love these big dangerous machines. I was thinking that the only thing more ridiculous would be axes on handles spinning on a stick. Great stuff!

Brian Myers

Eric, You make great videos and you are also brave. All the best in 2022.

Matt Dumais

The "clever" and imaginative and unnecessarily expensive designs in this feel awfully familiar to me from when I was an undergrad engineering student designing project parts for the first time and watching my colleagues do the same. We had lots of imagination and enough book knowledge, and no idea what made things more expensive and even less idea how the problems had been solved before. The janky throttle linkage just confirms it -- there was always something important that we left out of the design and had to duct-tape on later, and that's certainly what that looks like! :)

Brooks Moses

Oho! You thought you were mistaken, but you weren't -- you were wrong about putting the timing gear in incorrectly. If you turn the large gear a half-turn, the small gear will turn a full turn, and they will be lined up the way they were when you took them apart. (And, actually, the way you assembled them is the way that you're supposed to do it, because it's much harder to be off by one tooth when you're doing it that way.)

Brooks Moses

I think that threaded gear may be adjusting the preload on the clutch. Turning it will move it in and out, of course, and it looks like there's a bearing surface between the back of the gear and the end of the clutch mechanism. (EDIT: I see you explain this later in the video. I was right!) Also, there's a good word for this sort of design in computer programming that I find too many occasions to use: "clever". There's the claim that debugging a design takes twice as much cleverness as designing it in the first place, so if you put too much cleverness into the design, your coworkers are not going to be clever enough to debug it.

Brooks Moses

I can't believe you used this indoors on your workbench! I ground my teeth and held my breath.

Deino

Whomever designed this idiotic machine, I'd bet they didn't use it...and live to tell about it.

Phillip Newton

This was amazing. My next DnD barbarian is going to wield one of these.

Daniel J McDonald

Wow! Are you sure this wasn't designed as a weapon? Beautiful Job! I would make a wall hanger out of it and see how guest would react. Thanks for the video and giving me something new to have nightmares about. ; )

Edward Conway

Would the foam be for vibration damping possibly?

HamOnTheCob

Really appreciate the harsh hj at 34:27. hahaha

HamOnTheCob

This seems ideal for lopping off branches - hence the length - while someone else cuts the tree down. I seem to be in the minority but it doesn’t seem that unsafe to me … for the operator. You’re about ten feet from the blade, which has a surprising amount of protection. But it would be crazy dangerous for anyone around you. Perhaps it got its name because Sal the lumberjack intern became Sally when he startled the operator? Anyway, love the green and red and thanks for all you do. Please use the apple log for the yule log video.

Old Crow Bourbon

Cut off a nice roast while the animal grazes...

Scott Miller

Googled a bit and found some stuff on Cummings Machine Works - they did other things that weren't the Sally Saw. Something I saw, but didn't bookmark, seemed to imply that you could keep the engine level and turn the blade assembly 90 degrees. Maybe that explains the whole shaft/clutch/annular drive? Was the foam maybe to attenuate vibration? I also get the sense that this was more for clearing brush and not felling the giant redwoods of British Columbia ... Ohhhhhh .... He's a lumberjack, and he's okay, He sleeps all night and he works all day. Also, there is a Sallisaw, Oklhoma. Just sayin'.

Peter Laws

"withstain" should be in the oxford english dictionary

Zach Weisser

With it being over an hour long, you should make the title, “hand tool rescue: the movie. Where gizmocity meets danger…”

John Toves

Omazing, yes absolutely Omazing! 😂. Obviously lots of heavy bomber designers with far too much time and far to much expensive materials with nothing better to do than design a crazy beast like this. I love it ! Thanks you for taking your life into your hands so we don’t have too.

David Williams

That is straight out of a Mad Max movie!

Allen Carter

You had me at "danger". ❤️

Once again, narrated videos make for a total viewing experience. Your mining of tool development history is wonderful Eric. How did the chainsaw come into existence? Who'd of thought this monster was part of the story?

Louis Ross

that was so cool. the machine is insane...

Sebastien Tremblay

Just amazing

TheGons

Error 404. Beard not found!

Peter Špalek

your videos are the best, because of the humor!

Greg Steinmayer

Wait wait wait, at 19:23 did you say... MEAT BLADE??? Who on earth would need a meat blade for this thing?!

Jeremy Abel

Video helps. I also talk to the camera about parts it can't see from a certain filming angle.

Hand Tool Rescue

It makes no sense.

Hand Tool Rescue

Same to you my friend!

Hand Tool Rescue

Great video and narration. Do you keep notes on all the parts during disassembly or do you rely on the extensive video? I can only imaging how many hours of video you take and then edit down to something you can post.

Marcel Boudreau

"Sally Saw"? where in the Heck did the name come from. Not a very manly Lumberjack name 🤣🤣. And what kinda mind comes up with a machine like this??? Methinks he had too much Nutella 🤣. Thank you once again Eric. Love from #UK💙

Lucita Dawson (AKA 29LookinGood AKA Proud Nana)

Amazing. But, why is called a 'Sally' saw?

david batig

Wow thats one amazing death dealing machine right there...

Rik Kershaw-Moore

Whoever designed it was on a mission

Raul Ramos

Needs some chrome.

ChuckD

Astonishing. I was transfixed and put myself in danger by keeping the wife awake as I watched the video.

OldFrenchy

I love it

Rus Hoffman

That thing looks terrifying! Excellent!

Stephen Boots

AMAZING.

Reid

That looks more dangerous than the 2 man saw but more fun .

Christopher Woolley

Just got done watching...what part of that machine improves upon the classic chainsaw!? o.O I mean, I hate chain tension and always having to be mindful but if that is the only thing that this monster solves...I'll deal with it!!! What a strange and wonderful tool. Thank you! PS: Two smaller sizes of screwdrivers + Phillips. Thanks!

Brian Myers

A Christmas present in santa red and green for all of us! Thank you - we will have collective nightmares of being loudly, slowly sawed to death. A great holiday bonding experience!! Really, though, we love these weird old tools and how markets evolved over the years. Personally, I like the two-man chainsaw you did a while back even more. Happy Holidays Eric and all my fellow Patreons. 🎅🏼🎄🪚🍻

Marc McKenzie

*heavy sigh*

Eric Olson

Pretty sure you just said "...versus when you're fucking up a tree"

Jason B

Hour long video! Winning!

Planky

Oh yes! I wish I could post my face when I saw that image! Nothing is like HTR in mortal danger!

Brian Myers

Just from the thumbnail that looks like the weapon of a late-game boss of a resident evil game or something

TBthegr81

I will be disappointed if I watch this and there isn't a sally forth joke in there ;-)

Eric Olson

Oh you made my day with this! I can now rest well tonight!

Marcus
