Episode 9 | Suicide or Murder?

Apothecary Diaries Episode 9 (EARLY UNCUT ACCESS)

I believe this was a pivotal moment for Jinshi. To have Maomao so bluntly point out that they are not equals, and that she could be killed almost on a whim at any moment, and that he would have to be the one to give the order must have been sobering to Jinshi.

Once again this episode made me love this anime even more. The topic of suicide or murder was very foreboding, yet they still gave Jinshi and Maomao have that cute teasing moment. Their dynamic is so interesting to me, they aren’t “friends” per se but she is definitely more than a pawn to him at this point, yet they can still joke around with each other like this. Super cute I loved that montage and everything about it. The haunting red lighting, the silence except for the music. All of those scenes playing throughout of the deaths, schemes, accidents and conspiracies that remind you how complicated this world is and that you can die at any moment. I even admired the bluntness of Maomaos request, reminding both of them where they stand in regard to their status and the harsh reality that, if Maomao fucked up, Jinshi CAN give the order to execute her. Would he want to? Probably not. But he can and he would have to regardless; he’s the manager of the rear palace, that’s part of his job to keep order. I love how well this scene was executed and that they let the moment sit with the weight of the moment, not interrupted with humor.

You keep doing it again by being one of the best reactors out there. You catch on to so many little things, but then have so much fun with the character dynamics, especially Jinshi and Maomao. This one of my favorite episodes for sure, the musical montage is gorgeous and haunting at the same time. I remember the first time I saw that moment and the conversation that followed I thought it was a really bold way to show the harsh reality of the world they're in. I've watched literally hundreds of anime over the years, scenes like that are really really rare, especially only 9 episodes into a series. You can tell the stories in big bold ways with dramatic set pieces and whatnot, but to get SO MUCH impact with somber looks, gorgeous shot compositions (oh my god that lighting), and an incredible song. Then to follow that up with dialogue that is dark, but even darker with the subtext of the characters and their relative positions within the world. These are the moments that keep me coming back to watching anime (movies too but that's not what this channel is reacting to).

I think Gaoshun is insinuating "Jinshi" is a character and that the person is going to lose the facade if he kept acting like that

It keeps getting better and better

I don't know how you do that - but with each reaction you make me want to see more. In the olden days for such capability people might be burned at stake🤣 Because it does feel like goddamn magic. And as people say - we almost never see Jinshi when it isn't plot relevant. So given his position it's entirely plausible that he was visiting all concubines. And we just didn't see it. Also... well, it's Anime. People might look similar, because of the style. I guess we will see.

HAHA, I had just gone back to the main page after seeing your ep 8, only to find that you updated! Going to watch now, that's awesome. :3 This episode was great, I'm glad I'm re-watching it with ya!

To be fair we have never seen Jinshi visit another concubine unless Maomao was there. Also the guys at the beginning were talking about how Kounen spoiled the drinks but the idiots were all drinking sake with salt in it.
