Apothecary Diaries Episode 8 (EARLY UNCUT ACCESS)

Comments

That hand to hand struggle between Maomao and the servant girl was a textbook example of what to do if someone has something sharp, and neither of you have any idea how to defend yourself. Go for the hands and wrists, take the weapon away, and then keep it as far away from both of you as possible. The headbutt isn't usually recommended, but Maomao knows enough about anatomy to hit with the hard part of her head.

Couldn't wait for youtube, hi everyone.

Just started this show, shipping Jinshi & Maomao so hard. They remind me so much pride & prejudice, if it took place in the Ming dynasty

Lady Gyokuyou is really enjoying herself with the development between Jinshi and Maomao (like all of us) . Remember she teased Jinshi in the previous episode saying Maomao went home with another man..... for 3 days

8uroborous

I think he is in love with her. I thought he was all in when he gave her the hairpin

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

Wow yea I can only imagine how relatable that is for you as well! This quickly became one of my favorite animes just because of how widely dynamic it is and all of the small details and components it’s constructed really well. The characters are fantastic and seeing a lot of this story from Maomaos perspective is very fascinating as well to see how she views things in an intelligent, yet somewhat emotionally detached way. As far as where the story is headed/what’s the main plot, the mangas still on going, and I think season 1 covers 2/14 of the novels so far so….that’ll give you an idea of how far into the story we are haha

Gabriella Pinkoski

Gotta be honest I connected with it in a deep from with my last 10 yrs in a career as a professional ballerina in one of the top companies in the US… I just had a nice rant about it and the comparisons and how much I love this show with my husband yoshi (who was in the company with me) …. Yeah this anime is amazing I’m so impressed so far

HAHAHAHAH

I admire your self-control to not binge the entire series. It probably helps that you have a lot of other anime to cover. I personally like the Maomao/Jinshi relationship as it is. I get why people want them to be together but that could lead to a Moonlighting situation (leads finally get together and show goes downhill). Since the series is about solving mysteries we probably don't need to worry about that for awhile. And Maomao's primary love interest will probably always be the apothecary stuff. And probably poisons.

a2daj

you picking up on the multiple layered themes of poisons with the energy and political climate stuff made me so happy that's one of my favorite aspects of this show, especially relating to maomao wanting to know everything about medicines and a line from an earlier episode "if love makes a woman beautiful, i wonder what kind of medicine it would make."

Bambi

screaming. that’s the funniest shit i’ve seen in so long. like, she said it that way to mess with him right? 😂 also, what’s in the fucking annex?! 😫

Jinshi.exe has stopped working. A problem has caused the program to stop working correctly. Please close the program.

I know. I just wasn't sure if I should write a comment detailing all of that - because IDK how well Flexie knows Japanese and Far Eastern Cultures (in this case it's a bit of "Japanese/Chinese Hybrid"). And for that matter - I'm also far from expert on this myself. I studied Japanese 2 decades ago and I did work in... "Japanese Museum/Institute", so I probably have better knowledge of those things than average Westerner. But I never lived in Japan for long period of time, so I might have misinterpreted something or misunderstood/simplified some part of culture. It annoyed to to no end when people who watched Frieren assumed that Sein wanted to get on with someone who is "Older Sister" for example. And also if someone is reading this - "Xiaomao" nickname, would be a bit like saying "Maomao-chan" if I remember correctly. Thank you for expanding the topic a bit.

Lady Gyokuyou is great. She's such a rascal :D

Milosz Skowronski

Oh absolutely! It's a blink and you miss it moment but it's animated so lovingly that re-watches are so much fun.

AttackRunRepeat

They do that a lot in this show, tease some things in earlier episodes. Like how they show a glimpse of Lady Fuyou (Ep3) in the previous episode. Makes re-watches fun.

Darkwisp

It's not a brothel specific thing. These types of honorific qualifiers are very commonly used for anybody you know that fit those archetypes. An old man you know does not need to be your actual grandparent to be called ojiisan (おじいさん) or a woman that is a little bit older than you doesn't need to be your actual older sister to be called oneesan (お姉さん).

Guilherme Müller

The comparison that the pleasure district and the rear palace are both “a garden and a cage” is quite a line. You have all these beautiful women who live life seemingly in luxury and comfort, yet they are stuck where they are. As a courtesan you can’t just leave or quit if you want to stop doing the work you do; you’re owned. Same with the rear palace. The idea of consuming the “poisons” around them to become sweet poisons themselves, just so they can survive in this world and not suffer. Oof. What a world to live in

Gabriella Pinkoski

From my understanding, while the servants in the rear palace could theoretically be promoted to concubine if they catch the emperors eye they're not required to stay true to him before that and can leave for "dates" if they have a trusted suitor (which seemingly is only allowed through these parties which only have high ranked military officials and ministers attending). It's funny how despite her smarts even Maomao has her blind spots, since it's clear to everyone except her what a big deal these hair pins are ^^ Adding to that, before the garden party lady Gyokuyou gave Maomao a "pin" in the form of a necklace telling her that it's to help keep "bad bugs" away, so I assume some military officials may try to find servant girls to exploit during these parties. So I'd like to think that the main reason Jinshi gave her his pin was that after hearing her story and knowing she was without her usual defence in the form of freckles he wanted to protect her by marking her.

Mikael Hultman

So here's a interesting detail but in the last episode when Maomao and Lihaku are riding into the pleasure district it shows some courtesans and people on the streets. One of the girls sweeping the street is the servant girl who tried to stab the rich merchant.

AttackRunRepeat

So - Mao Mao calls Mei Mei - "Mei Mei nee chan". "Big Sister Mei Mei". In brothel all the ladies are (I assume) basically like Big Sisters or Little Sisters to each other. This was my assumption based on Anime, before I've read Light Novel. Since I've read it though I'm not going to confirm or deny whether it was true.

I wondered what I should say - but nothing seems appropriate to express my gratitude towards you posting those fantastic reactions. OK. I shall now watch, you take care. Especially of your health.
