Honestly, I think most people don't care, whether you think that's bad or not. Its a great show despite some admittedly problematic scenes and in my experience, reactors usually still end up liking these shows despite people freaking out in the comments. @Laura Bea, You should at least check out his S1 eps 1-8 if you have the time. Studio Bind decided to take a very mature approach to this series. They wont handhold the viewers like other shows do. They do actually give you all the details so the viewer can figure it out on their own. Or in this case, have a psychologist help you understand why and how Rudy is the way he is, as well as highlighting his progress and regression as it happens. Watching his explanations helped me understand multiple characters better.

Tbh I do believe that there’s potentially a different interpretation hiding in there somewhere which could make it less creepy - but I think they didn’t bother to take the time to lay the groundwork in a sensitive way, so ultimately I decided that the worst interpretation best fit the text. The sticking point is that he not only remembers his past life, he explicitly still views his new life through the lens of his past life, and who he was then: aka through the lens of a 30 something year old man. It doesn’t really matter to me if he is a new person or not, I care that his viewpoint and mental are portrayed s being identical to the previous one. That’s the rub.

Most people I see bashing Mushoku start out with the intention of bashing it. They don't try to understand the story, and they don't want to understand. I just had to put my two cents in. I didn’t even vote for Mushoku Tensei, but the dishonesty and cherry picking that I see coming from the people who are crying over it is absurd and hilarious. I’ve never heard of any hate like this with any age gap anime, but when it comes to Mushoku it's the worst thing in the world. It really shows the hive mind and unoriginality that some people have. These are the same people who never mention anything about age and turn their cheeks when it comes to Violet Evergarden (14yrs old) and Gilbert (29yrs old), Inuyasha (200+ yrs old) and Kagome (15yrs old), or Kaoru (17yrs old) and Kenshin (28ys old), or Chise (15yrs old) and Ainsworth (ancient), Cardcaptor Sakura (10yrs old) and her 5th grade teacher (the promise ring that will turn into an engagement ring), hell you can even argue that Frieren 1000+yrs old and Himmel (16yrs old when they departed on their journey) is inappropriate. None of these unprincipled & inconsistent people will ever call out any of the dozens (maybe even hundreds of shows) out like they do with Mushoku Tensei. I mean I doubt they even watched it; they just like to cry and be obnoxious and respond to everyone's comments about how THEY don't like it. LOL its actually aggravating. Reincarnating into a younger body doesn’t matter when mentally and emotionally he’s still a grown man, the show makes it quite clear he is still that person mentally, and he is using the experience and will of a grown man to sexually assault a very young girl. And the show minimizes it too. Also, being a shut-in doesn’t mean you are basically a child in the sense that you don’t have the agency and responsibility/duty of adulthood. Shut-ins are still answerable to universal moral codes such as don’t rape, don’t abuse real children and don’t murder. Same as all adults.

@Mune Yotsuki If you made it through both seasons, then that should mean you’ve seen both the disgusting human being(Earthdeus) and the well adjusted Rudy at the end of season 2. He had never fully matured or overcame his own horrific trauma as a kid in his previous life. With his new life he became a better, more well rounded person through trial and error. He made an effort with help from friends and family to unlearn those bad behaviors in the games and LNs he had latched onto in his previous life as his coping mechanism. People aren’t shallow for hating Rudy, the only issue comes from people refusing to acknowledge any nuance to the character and his actions. When he makes a terrible decision he sees the consequences and learns to not do it again. I said there is only 1 unforgivable thing because consent in any form is absolutely necessary. In the barn, Rudy already understood that no means no because of the bath incident with Sylphy. But he doesn’t get a no. He got silence. With his knowledge of eroge tropes, that would mean yes by his mistaken knowledge. Eris is the one who forgives/punishes him for his actions against her. In my eyes his action was unforgivable, but he learns a lesson that no reply is not a yes. The viewer doesn’t really get to dictate how characters interact. Eris is born and raised in a medieval society where SA and other horrific things are common even among nobles. The punishment befit the action in her eyes. Not only that, but it worked. Rudy at least learned a lesson from that awful scene. The only other time Rudy does something is his birthday when he thinks he gets consent after trying to scare her off. He dives in head first and gets his just desserts for not understanding boundaries. He learns that even being told that it’s ok doesn’t necessarily mean it’s actually ok. Since Turning Point 1 Rudy never once made a move on someone who couldn’t consent due to age or whatever. He is a very powerful man of noble birth. If he was truly as evil as haters would have you think, this wouldn’t be a well written mature story, but a gross ecchi glorifying what you, I and most people hate.

I doubt she made it past the barn scene. Maybe she saw the birthday scene and misinterpreted what actually went down. Rudy tries to scare her away but she then says something that makes him believe he got consent(of course he couldn’t have gotten consent in the first place). He then jumps right into his “I know what to do from eroge” mindset and is stopped and punished by her for his misunderstanding. He learns from this and never again acts on an assumption of consent. Very simple unlearning of bad behavior. It helps that Rudy does genuinely want to be social and get along with the people he cares about.

You prove my point. Odds are you enjoy or even recommend other shows with horrific things in them like “Game of Thrones” or “The Boys”. Murder, Incest, Slavery all terrible things the main characters in these types of shows participate in, yet these shows are critically acclaimed. If you can’t handle a mature show, one with themes and topics that don’t sit right with your perfect protagonist Clark Kent then don’t watch them and stick to basic shounen and Shojo. While I absolutely agree with your take I also think that "the pervy stuff" is a minority in the anime as a whole. There are a few scenes and over the length of the show they barely matter - BUT I do agree that they are impressionable and are a make or break moment for a lot of people. SAO gets the "harem" complaints when the main character has literally never looked at any girl in a romantic approach except for one. And if you break down the female characters in it close to MC, they all love him and appreciate him for his strength and what he did for them... some are trauma bonds, some are savior complex, sure, but let's not lump it into a harem or ecchi anime similar to what MT is being portrayed as. Hell i'd argue the Re:zero had more cringy undertones than SAO and i like both a lot still lol... Keep in mind, unlike other anime, the scenes of awkwardness etc are between characters of the same age group, unlike adult -> child-loli lookalike crap

SAO keeps getting the shorrt end of the stick. it's not a perfect show but s1 is decent lore intro, and alicization and war of underworld is peak anime for that time era, and amazing fights and ethical dilemmas etc. GGO and other's rosario are dark and good stories of chracter development. I dont care for alfheim as much others complain about it, mostly because i UNDERSTAND japanese traditions and relationships (similar to arab ones a bit), but the western audience wouldnt get it,, so i get their view and i respect it... My only arc that i dislike is excalibur, feels random and unnnecessary and can be skipped other than introducing the avatars of some characters of main party. but the show is actually a good isekai considering it's one of the first shows to do it and made the genre famous... people just love to hate on SAO, but SAO was the gateway anime for a LOT of anime viewers and isekai lovers, and it's sad that it always gets the same patreon circle jerk of haters pushing it down... i'm sure flexie would have loved it because of the character developments.

SAO alicization and war and of underworld story line is INSANELY good and has some of the best moral and ethical dilemma especially with what is happening in the world right now (no spoilers). I will admit that S1 is good (albeit a bit inconsistent in story telling and leaves room for assumptions) and that arc 2 is weak, but mother's rosario is an emotional fuckfest that flexie would love, and GGO (albeit i dont like the gun setting or character avatar) has an amazing new sinon character that flexie would empathize with... we do not talk about excalibur arc, but original scale movie was fun, and the progressive movies are good too. leading to a great showdown in alicization and war of underworld. Is the show perfect? absolutely not, it has flaws, and the SAO true fans know the flaws, we're not ignorant, but to just hate on the show ALTOGETHER just because of ~6-8 episodes out of place out of 100s... that's just a bit of an exageration... Everyone reacts to the mainstream ones, but SAO always gets the short end of the stick because of generic comments like "anything but sao guys"... that's not fair for an older show that existed beffore the "anime formula" was discovered... and SAO is the gateway aime show to a LOT of fans that helped them watch MORE anime.

Some people wont even try to understand how Rudy is a complicated, damaged person who grows and changes when he has the opportunity and guidance he needs. In the series so far he has done only 1 completely unforgivable thing(the barn), in this he immediately learns that the behavior he observed in eroge is not right to do even when given the opportunity. In the next episode he is given the same opportunity and chooses not to do it and learns to be a better person. Every other scene that has him regress/screw up is nuanced in why it happens and Rudy always learns something that makes him a better person because of it. It’s meant to be uncomfortable to watch those scenes, Rudy must unlearn the stuff his games and LNs taught him and instead learn how to properly interact with the real people he cares about.

Agreed. I'm really surprised how many picks there are already for MT, I feel like if you're a patron of Flexie you should know that it's not a great fit for her channel. Should probably point out the 'uncomfortable moments' are sexual scenes involving young or young-looking characters. It's basically an ecchi compared to everything else on the list, and it occurs almost every episode. (actually SAO is pretty weird too)

re zero is a great series, the rest of the picks are rlly great too! I just wouldn’t recommend mushoku tensei imo. that show has some very uncomfortable moments that are hard to get through, but I’m super excited for your upcoming reactions to shows in the future (especially spy family and one piece lol)
