@Marvin You echo my original sentiments when I originally watched this episode when it first aired over a decade ago, but now disagree. I can see why they went with this style of animation, even it is quite jarring as it contrasts so much with the standard style. I think it is this exaggerated to convey something deeper, and that being the scale and the power and the "epicness" of this moment. I'm not saying that this is the truth, but as a former big hater on this animation, I've come around to a different understanding. Because I was an original hater, I can totally see where everyone is coming from that doesn't like it.

Somebody else mentioned it above but Sakura couldn't really tell what was going on between Naruto and Pain. That's why that Byakugan-guy sits next to her (something Hinata doesn't need). I am certain if she knew what was going on she would rush in there and try to help. Anything else would be out of character for her, even if their friendship is just platonic👍 Also, many leaf ninjas literally died for Naruto, biggest example being Kakashi. I don't think they would stand idly by if they knew that Naruto was impaled into the ground.

People always say that Hinata was the only one who came to Narutos aid so she must be the one who cares the most about him...well, she was most likely the only one who actually saw what was going on between him & Pain. Also, people ignore the fact that basically all leaf village ninjas were ready to die in order to protect Naruto. Shikamarus first instinct when he heard that Naruto is fighting Pain alone was to try and help him with zero regard for his own life in that moment. Heck, Kakashi literally died for him. He knew where Naruto was and he *could* have told Pain the location and probably could have survived. And if Sakura knew what was going on between Naruto and Pain she clearly would have tried to help him. It would be extremely out of character for her not to try and take action. But as you said...she obviously didn't know how desperate his situation was at that moment. Also, we don't see Katsuyu talk to Hinata once. So it could even be assumed that she didn't get the "keep out of it"-message. But that's just a theory so.

Hey Lighto San thank you for talking about a Kami and how Japan does have several gods (the emperors blood line is supposedly a descendent of a god) and pain calling himself a Kami and fully believing it, it’s interesting to compare it to the “god complex” where someone believes they are superior to other and have all rights to do whatever they deem necessary with their power for their “greater good”. I think both can be true. But he has definitely called himself a Kami multiple times now lol. It’s fascinating seeing the cracks though… him wanting to have this conversation with Naruto, and asking Naruto if he has a better plan. I’m obsessed with this arc and I can’t wait to release the pain backstory episodes! 🔥

No? You're very confused. A god complex is a mental state where someone believes they are truly more privileged than anyone else and use whatever power they have to make people do what they want. Pain's path for peace is similar to how the United States of America achieves peace lol. It's not that hard to sympathize with. We became the ultimate power after we won World War II and we essentially started to control everything on the planet of geopolitical significance. We control through fear of death. Pain is america. Naruto's version of peace is a pipe dream that doesn't exist in reality, but we all wish could exist.

So let me explain Pain and why he is actually right: Pain's way to peace is called "M.A.D" (Massive assured Destruction) and it's the same System we have now in the real world that prevents major wars. Basically the Super powers have many nukes therefore no one attacks nobody and major wars doesn't happen. Now you can argue: "Ok but that's not real peace because it's forced and it won't last long" That's exactly Pain's point - That's another thing that people don't understand about Pain, he doesn't believe that his way is the best path to peace, he believes that it's the ONLY possible way of ever creating some peace and he's right and the brilliant thing about this is that Naruto and everyone else who just hates him proves his point. The cycle of Hatred can't be destroyed- Humanity can't understand each other - If two people can't understand each other how can the entire World? (A Villian who does bad things for the greater good) He is the voice of the little nations that got destroyed and ignored after they - The Super powers - Destroyed them. It's a throw back to the middle east and US. Pain is the consequence of that and stands for the little villages and their Justice. Like Pain said: After Naruto experienced that Pain his Vengeance is justified too but that will never lead to Peace just more Hatred. I've seen probably all reactions ever to this episode and the people who can't understand pain are more emotional than the People who can. Psychologically speaking.

...okay, I'm gonna try to explain it as simple as I can. Pain calls himself a god in translated versions of the story. He calls himself a Kami in Japanese. Viewing oneself as a Kami is far more reasonable in Japanese because there actually were humans who became Kami. In other words, it is an achievable goal according to Japanese mythology. Look at Light in Death Note. He does have a god complex and we know (Flexie also already knows) that people who used the Death Note neither go to heaven nor hell. The most common and most likely theory (yes, it's just a theory!!) regarding that statement is that people who use the Death Note actually will become Shinigami. In other words Lights god complex actually was correct and justified...because in Japanese mythology humans actually can become Kami. Do you also realize how in Japanese media people who view themself as so-called gods usually are not treated as cringe but as extremely epic and strong characters? Could that maybe be because these words hold different meanings in different cultures? Pain didn't call himself a god. He called himself a Kami. That is objectively speaking entirely different from viewing oneself as a god from a western perspective. One could even go so far as to say that from a Japanese perspective him calling himself a Kami is entirely reasonable and justified. Also, why are you so fixated on this 1 sentence of my comment?

finally Hinata got to truly be there for Naruto and confess in front of him :) she finally got to come out of her shell and prove herself :) once again the whole thing was beautiful and painful at the same time :P she did pretty much save him since she managed to trigger the 9-tails so Naruto could fight back :D and what an epic fight it was, just a crazy spectacle with a monster fighting a corpse :) Chibaku tensei (Planetary Devastation) was pretty insane, especially if the whole Moon thing was true :P the final moment was so epic with Naruto walking towards the cage and then Minato stepping in, love that :)

In regards to Lighto San talking about bad writing….and I’m trying to be as careful as I can here for Flexies sake so there is no spoilers….there isn’t really a whole lot of opportunities for the story to fully follow up on this moment since everything is kind of going at such a rapid pace from here. We have to remember that this is a Shonen series after all. We aren’t really here for the romance. All of that aside in my humble opinion these are two of the most important episodes in all of Naruto along with the episodes following this.

It does matter because in Japanese believe systems there isn't just one god. Sure, there is a hierarchy but there exist many Kami within Japanese mythology. And you know what? According to their mythology some of these Kami actually were humans once. In other words if he calls himself a kami the perception Japanese people have towards that sentence is totally different in comparison to western people. Humans descending towards godhood is not unheard of in Japanese mythology. But it *is* almost entirely unheard of in western religions. I would even go so far as to say that the word "god" as a stand-in for Kami could be considered a mistranslation...but we don't really have a better word to describe Kami, so, it's whatever But the concepts of Japanese Kami is entirely different from the word "god" as we know it.

I agree with your first sentence somewhat (not entirely), but at the same time...with everything you said here...if we take your word as fact...than episode 166 actually kinda sucks. Her confession basically is rendered meaningless. It doesn't have any impact if the guy she confesses to supposedly doesn't hear the confession. At that point it's not even a confession anymore. And sure, she whispered it, but come on. It's clearly presented as words he is supposed to hear & listen to. And he *is* clearly listening to what she is saying. Honestly, it's pretty hard to justify NaruHina as a ship in general. Look at all the headcanon loopholes you have to jump through here which are clearly not showcased within the episode. And with everything you said it just makes Naruto look like a real dumbass by the end of it...which takes most of the emotional impact completely out of it. Ngl, your justifications for Naruto ignoring Hinata afterwards make episode 166 look absolutely terrible. And sure. We have seen Naruto struggling multiple times to catch what Hinata says. Yes, because in the past she was always super nervously stuttering around him. Something she isn't within this episode. I think that's also why people like her within this fight scene. Her character for once is more than just "Na..Na...Naruto-kun..."

The thing with the animation many people often miss in this episode and why people dislike it pretty often is...it's meant to represent 1 thing: Similarly to the Ninetails Tendo Pain (that's what the main body is called) is not human. He is a corpse being manipulated. So what the animation is trying to convey in many scenes here is that this isn't really a normal battle anymore. I do have to admit though, some of the shots can look really ugly even in motion. The animation itself is certainly not bad, but the style they choose for this is just...questionable, to say the least. It does do a good job at showcasing a certain sense of speed though. Also you can see Nagatos facade crack a little bit here. For example, he tried to talk to Naruto instead of just instantly taking him away. He didn't have to do that but he probably feels some sort of kinship with Naruto because they both trained under Jirayja which is why he was willing to give Naruto a chance. He also didn't interrupt Hinatas little speech before she fought him. And you have to ask, why does he do that? Why does he hear her out after mercilessly killing so many villagers? It's almost like there are some hints thrown around here which showcase that he didn't manage to 100% detach himself from his human emotions. The biggest one in that regard is obviously this line he says towards Naruto: "You and I are both ordinary men." I don't like it when people talk about Pain having a god complex because...well, gods or rather Kami in Japanese believes are not really comparable to western believes. But in this moment he completely dropped the act and actually tried to reason with him. And the funny thing is...it actually worked. Naruto does learn a lot through Nagato and Naruto does mature through Nagato. Honestly, his writing is masterful and it's no wonder that this arc is commonly considered to be the best Naruto arc

Only when knowing great pain can you find great peace is what he says and it is fundamentally correct, it’s based on how we experience things as humans. But the trick is that you don’t need to go through the pain yourself, we have empathy to understand pain but he doesn’t believe that is possible because he had a life with no empathy with the only constant being pain, therefore pain turned into his master replacing Jiraya. Since he learned everything through pain he thinks is the only solution

To be honest, Naruto going into the Ninetails mode right after Hinata presumably gets killed right in front of him is basically completely proving everything Pain said in his speech to Naruto. He made his point and Naruto giving into hate & rage solidifies his point even more
