DEATH NOTE Episode 5 (Early Uncut Reaction)

Episode 5 | Tactics

Comments

yea he is a protagonist, you do not have to be good to be a protagonist

Kenycents

Protagonist vs antagonist is the argument I was at at this point, light is a mass murderer so could he be a protag?

Kcosta

Light is simply a sociopath lol

Maxxy

This is an Antagonist Anime

response to Michal and Lighto: I'm not attempting to anthropomorphize fictional animated characters and their fictional backgrounds to any implied (American/western) standard; I'm talking about the Japanese language used to dictate their conversation. There's a clear disconnect between how a native western conversation would be conducted vs how it is conducted in Japanese. The implication of intent is valid across borders, but, the manner of dictation is clearly more eastern Asian than natural western, and therefore comes off as patronizing in comparison. TL;DR: Japan can't translate emotional nuance between Americans via language very well, therefore it comes off abrasive. It goes both ways lol

Thalanoth

Love your reactions in general btw

Cheskimo

I'll be honest, I joined your Patreon just to watch your Death Note reactions ahead of time

Cheskimo

hoobity

Lol ofc 🙏🏼 you're definitely not alone. Well intentioned but definitely sounded like 🤨

Have you ever considered that *maybe* she wants to be a housewife who takes care of her family? Why else would she be a *former* FBI agent? And if she wants to be a housewife *maybe* her husband was trying to help her disconnect from her past? It's his job so he takes care of it and she shouldn't stress herself out over his problems. The thing which makes it look patronizing is that he was pretty harsh about it. But all of this is so obvious if you look at it unbiased. Raye clearly is portrayed as a sympathetic person. Naomi clearly doesn't view him as patronizing. Why would she be married to him if she viewed him as a restriction? (responding to Thalanoth)

Lighto San

Chill. Think. Contemplate.

MetalPouringJesus

And how do you know he did not comment as such because Naomi, in fact, doesn't want to investigate anymore because she had her fill with the BB cases, and it is way more meaningful for her to be a mother, even though she is a great detective? Then Rayes' comment would only be reminding her this is how she decided, when he saw her professional habits, as she called them, to be activated. She certainly may have decided being mother will make her happy rather then working for FBI, and Raye, who wants her to be happy is on her side here. This is also a valid interpretation, as is yours, but you choose your interpretation to be canonical because of your personal experiences and cultural standards.

"そして父になる" is a great jap film. The disparity between the lifestyles of the families, wealth vs poverty/traditional vs lax, is a depressingly fun watch lol

Thalanoth

ehh it was certainly patronizing; I felt the same way back in highschool when I saw it (2006/07). He's not wrong, but, it is odd to take an obviously accomplished woman and chalk her future down to housewife when she's clearly more than that. Since they wanted kids, it's obvious she needs to step back, however doin so in such a direct manner is so completely japanese it comes off as un-american, since that's what they're supposed to be lol

Thalanoth

I think what Raye said rubbed you the wrong way because you felt like he was patronizing her, when this wasn't the case. He truly cares about her, knows her habits and wants to help her to enjoy life after leaving FBI. That is the thing about heuristics, when they lead to truth we call them "good intuition", when they are wrong we call it "jumping to conclusions". Naomi could have been wrong about Kira, just as you were wrong about Raye, and you could have been right about Raye just as she was right about Kira. That is why one needs to be careful about his interpretations of events. The interpretation always seems right, but that is not necessarily the case.

Omg Flexie I love this reactions and hear your thoughts 💙

Steffy

‼️‼️🔥 yes! Insane …

Jessica McCann

Enjoying this show with Flexie I'm realizing how the catalyst for this weird battle is actually just boredom. Ryuk was bored, light was bored, idk about L. But it's weird to think how many people are dying.. just because one genius kid and one shingami were just.. bored.

Coburnify .

Cannot contain my excitement for the rest!

dmc 1219

Thank you!! Happy to have you here! I def. plan to post another one when I get the time this week. I'd like to post 2 a week so keep your eyes open for that!

Jessica McCann

I have been so happy with your patreon content its insane! Binge watching all the things has been so much fun, but another deathnote episode each week would be so amazing!

Justin Huntsman

I really appreciate how you worded this comment because it’s exactly why I had the reaction I did. But I get it. Lol thanks

Jessica McCann

Oh fuck 🥵 OH NO!

Jessica McCann

this is one of the most exciting watch-throughs of your run thus far, truly. believe me when i say we are all unbelievably excited to see you see this masterpiece! there is a reason this show is marked as a flagship anime of the highest order, and we are so excited to witness you find out why.

spectral.mozzarella

i wouldn't say light's a narcissist, because him "making a better world" isn't self indulgent, he's actually putting work in for what he thinks is good, but he's definitely megalomaniacal - he believes he knows what absolute good is

Dale Diaz

I mean if you go back and look at all the anime you've watched thusfar, you can tell its a common trend in anime that bad and good are not clear lines

Dale Diaz

That as well lol

Tacosareneat

True, and keep in mind this anime is from 20 years ago hahaha

LawLaw

this was once again quite genius from Light, he killed multiple flies at once :D it was really fun to watch this unfold, his whole game plan, the way Raye died was done very well too :) L seems to be pretty cold himself, its like he doesnt care what it takes as long as he solves the case :P this development is super intriguing, a special unit is formed, L is ready to make a move, Raye's fiancee is on Light's ass, this is gonna be fun :D

Kisame

Just realized Raye Penber can't go to heaven or hell because Light made him use the death note

Erik Perez

Yeah the whole scene with Raye and Naomi is definitely a culture shock to watch as an American in 2024 haha. I also think it seemed slightly sexist the way Raye was talking, but it's really just an example of cultural differences in japan. I think Raye was truly trying to be sweet and caring, and I think Was trying to communicate "I don't want you to get involved because I love you and don't want you to get hurt" but with western ears it definitely sounded like "woman, dont get involved with this case. Once I put babies in you, you won't have time for such silly thoughts anyways" 😂
