Frieren Beyond Journey's End Ep25 REACTION (Early Uncut Access)

Episode 25 | A Fatal Vulnerability

Frieren Beyond Journey's End Ep25 REACTION (Early Uncut Access)

Comments

This episode really shows you how much Frieren held back against Denken in the first test.

Ryne

I'm assuming you've completed the season in my response. If you haven't, I would suggest holding off on reading further. While manipulative COULD be a possible reading from it, I think I disagree. I don't think the anime's plot points and developments have leaned toward that reading of Serie's character. Both Frieren and Serie have been kuudere-coded, and even Frieren has called Serie "child-like " and "awkward", someone who "can't even tell her disciples how she feels". Serie is what Frieren would be like if she never met Flamme or Himmel, and continued to live for many many thousands of years. I also disagree about the notion that she "casts off" or "discards" anyone. There's nothing to indicate this. And the last episode proves this too. She's just outlived them. She's just too embarrassed to admit she's proud of someone's achievements and her feelings for them. Lernen is free to be critical of Serie to her face. When Series says she'll conduct the third test herself, Lernen says "I'm very familiar with your willful-ness", but he uses the term "wagamama" which is most often used to describe a needy child. This is would be considered rude and punishment worthy by someone who was megalomaniacal. Serie also apologizes to Sense for claiming that too many passed this year, and that there was indeed a bumper crop of worthy first-class mages. Someone megalomaniacal wouldn't admit they were wrong to someone beneath them. In her will, Flamme wanted to declare that she achieved her dream, and requested Serie take the reins on being running a standardizing regulatory organization for humanity's magic. And though Serie is annoyed by this, we as the audience immediately know that centuries later, Serie forms the Continental Magic Association in accordance with her wishes. The scene with the little Flamme flashback is telling. Serie asked Frieren to walk with her. She wanted to remember and reminisce about Flamme, and Frieren is the only other person on earth who knew her. Serie wanted to commiserate in her own way with Frieren, because they both loved her. But being the childish, awkward immortals they are, they can't say it. Instead they talk about Flamme's accomplishments as the founder of humanity's magic, and the future of human mages who have Flamme to thank. 葬送 Sousou from the title means “funeral march” or “funeral procession". Serie and Frieren's little walk through the woods, is a scaled down version of Frieren's journey to see Himmel again.

The symbolism of Frieren standing to meet the dawn, and Serie turning to stand in shadow is so good.

Or she's learned to be an adept manipulator. Plus, and forgive the analogy, but everyone is happy and smiling when they get to play with a new toy. It's easy to be gracious, generous, and benevolent as a meglomaniac when you're discovering everything new and exciting about a promising new pawn you can shape in your image, and said pawn idolizes the ground you walk on. It's just as easy to cast off said pawn when it disappoints you. It's easier to catch flies with honey and all that. You see that when Frieren first meets her, she's initially as kind and giving as possible, but when Frieren rebuffs her offer and she discards her. I haven't read the manga, so that's just my impression from the anime.

Alex Hencher

actually thats just what its called in Tekken, the wrestling move is called a Mexican Surfboard or a Romero Special! I didn't even notice it until she pointed it out lol

William Roberts

I love when Serie tells Frieren that a human mage could end up killing her, it flashes the first time she ever met Fern, with her standing on the clif and her staff towering over her.

William Roberts

That's fair, a good way to put that

jacob

idk if she’s “completely fine” with it, but from what we’ve seen so far she definitely subconsciously thinks it’s a good thing

Zachary Mullins

Serie's actions speak louder than her words, she is completely fine with magic being free

jacob

yeah shes pretty badass tbh but kinda flys under the radar a bit. shes very useful and crafty

Fire Cape

Serie: Magic should be special Frieren: Magic should be free

Caradoc Elmet

Both Frierens playing defense from the start shows just how experienced Frieren is and I love it

Frawg

I ship her with Sein; hopefully they meet one day.

James Bell

The magic system in this anime is so well-thought, it's impressive

John Urbina

Not me having watched episode 24 when it was uploaded, and not realizing it was a double upload! We here though, let's go!

I love the contrast of Serie's cold, standoffish, heavily rationalized words, against the warm image of her smiling while holding little Flamme's hand and walking through the forest floor surrounded by trees and flowers. Serie's words may be harsh, but her non-verbal expressions and that little visual of her and Flamme tells a very different story.

I love that line about how Fern can fire off Zoltraak without thinking, whereas it's a relatively new spell for Elves. The newest generation can fire it off reflexively... It's an interesting in-world parallel to how quickly newer generations internalize new technology. Kids who grew up with iphones. A few years ago I was a teacher at an Adult Education Center, running classes on Microsoft Office software like Powerpoint, Word, Excel. One thing I noticed was that older generations, who were born before home computing was even a thing, have to remember basic Operating System paradigms like folders and file systems in order to do things like drag and drop files. They have to think first and THEN do it. But it's almost reflex for folks who grew up with that as a child.

SUCH a good episode! Thank you for posting 24 and 25 on the same day. Little Flamme was so cute. Do you think someday we'll see Fern's student bring her will to Freiren?

Carl Rigney

Methode kinda goated, lots of differing abilities and good combat abilities. A jack of all trades

Jaded_J

20:00 that's the king's bridge, a pro wrestling move. Kanna is NOT having fun.

Jake Thompson

Frieren's manga is phenomenal, season 2 will be even more epic.

YellowboyRickLee

Also, glad you are watching Apothecary Diaries soon. You will most likely really enjoy it. It's so well done.

AzyxA

I wish they would say the ages somewhere lol, the wiki says about Land that his grandmother died 26 years after Himmel, and he was already a 3rd class mage. Then 29 years after he was 2nd class. People online guess Methode is like early 30's. Wirbel and Ehre are like 32-35.

Andy Hinton

Frieren and Ferns magic aka old magic it's basically raw, unattributed magic. As to where present day magic is all attribute-based most people are born with the ability to use one form of magic properly thru genetics and then choose to study and train that kind only. So that's kind of why Frieren and Fern are so strong because people don't know how to fight against just pure raw magic anymore.

Andy Hinton

Yes! Just noticed this dropped.

AzyxA

Outside of Denken and Frieren, Richter is probably the oldest person there. We don't know how old Methode is but all the girls; Fern, Laufen, Lawine, Kanne all seem to be in their late teens at best. I believe Kanne and Lawine are supposed to be like 15.

Jennis Daamen

Frieren is actually very scary because she is definitely hiding her power levels. Also the next episode is going to go hard. P.S. I like the juxtaposition you drew between Frieren and Fern versus Serie and Flamme.

Drift3r

Serie keeps her emotions close to her chest (like a Tsundere should) but there are those glimpses that tell you she actually cares. She could have let Frieren walk away after Frieren delivered Flamme's will, but she asked her to take a walk just so she could talk about her late student. It was almost like a eulogy, and I think despite her stern exterior she needed to let it out and share those memories with someone else close to Flamme, so she could grieve in her own way. To paraphrase Nijika from Bocchi the Rock: "She's a tsun... tsun-tsun-tsun-tsun-tsun-tsun-tsun-tsun-tsun-tsun-tsun-tsun-tsun-tsun-tsun-tsun-... dere." :D

Milosz Skowronski

Line of the episode: Your Zoltraak can kill me *mischievious smirk*

Laura Bea

Serie is a really great foil for Frieren over the last quarter of the season. Starting with the first time you see them meet in episode 21 all the way through to the end. She is a case study in one of the ways Frieren could have ended up but didn't and the reasons for that are really integral to the narrative.

Cronshaw

I always thought what if Serie is 100k years old just because of the way she said "in a mere thousand years" like Frieren said mere 10 years and is 1000+. but 100k seems kinda crazy so idk lol

charlie

waiting for next episode will be hard

gusttafa

Frist time we get to see non basic attack magic from Frieren.

Holliday

I think how they structured the second half of season 1 is interesting compared to the first half. We covered several years in the first half, sometimes skipping years at a time. And the second half takes place over a mere week. But it feels like such a long time while watching. I think this difference is from a shift in perspective. The first half we are seeing everything from Frieren's eyes. And in the second half we start to see things from Ferns eyes. The Frieren we see in the second half is how Fern sees her. We get more of her silly side, and she doesn't seem as cold, and time is no longer passing in the blink of an eye. I think this is a subtle and very tasteful transition to Fern becoming the main character. (Just a prediction, idk.) But that last scene when Serie predicts humans will surpass elves and then Frieren literally steps aside so her student can defeat the most powerful elf, who is also her Master, in a sense. Is very powerful symbolism. I hope that season 2 continues this theme and we get to see Fern grow and inherit Flamme's legacy

jakob thurman

the next episode goes unimaginably hard lol

Ashley Twigg

The conversation between Frieren and Serie is just sooo full of amazing parallels and subtle truths bleeding through. Despite Serie saying she disagreed with Flamme and how her view on magic disgusted her she was smiling in every scene she talked about Flamme. Serie saying multiple times it was just a whim and her time with Flamme was so short as to mean nothing compared to her life as a whole also calls back to Frieren at the start of the show constantly saying it was just a mere decade she spent with Himmel and the party of heroes and it being nothing compared to her life as a whole, and yet in both cases that short time deeply affected them. This is also evidenced by how a milennium after Flamme asked her to take over training humanity in magic she founded the continental magic association to do just that, albeit still being selective in her own way (evidently having done just what she said elves sometimes do, spending a thousand years thinking about it before deciding). I really love the Fern/Frieren stuff too. As you say Frieren is clearly soo so proud of Fern, and while I doubt much of Fern's strength lies in raw mana (though I'm sure it's quite respectable). Mages nowadays are evidently a bit too obsessed with flashy, advanced spells tailored to their personality while neglecting the basics, leaving them vulnerable when out of their element. But Fern has spent her life training in many aspects which other mages seemingly don't bother with or care for much at all. Her control of her basic attack spell as well as her quick reflexes and speed not to mention stealth are skills she has honed to near perfection, and combined with her intimate knowledge of Frieren she is an almost perfect counter to the monster that is Frieren. It kinda makes me wonder how intentional this was from Frieren when she set out to train her ^^

The next episode is CRAZY!
