Kraft was the himmel of all himmels

Alex dejesus

Minute 32, non spoiler: himmel made frieren memorize 100 poses after meeting the dwarf and then later doubled down with the statues later, this town was the second ish statue

Kcosta

"Sein" means "To be" btw.

Lynn

It was a difficult moment when Frieren finally realized that "Old Man Voll" isn't a "jokester" but legitimately forgets things. Even big things like "Demon Lord was defeated". And sadder personal things like "I can't remember anything about my wife anymore".

Jan Negrey

And with luck by the time she starts it we might already have the release date for season 2.

Yeah, it's such a good series and I think it's perfect for Flexie. I'd been hoping she would watch that. I'm looking forward to watching little Maomao again.

"How did he take the photo?" ......... Maaaaaagic.

you made my day with the Apothecary Diaries announcement hell yes I can't wait.

After the conversation with Old man Voll where it is revealed that he actually is becoming senile, having forgotten that Frieren had already defeated the Demon King, she tells him to "Take Care" as she leaves, but when he stops her and tells her that he dreamt of his wife, she corrects herself and says "See you later."

Unpaid AstroNOT

Fun Fact: Frieren is very particular in how she says good bye to people. If she expects that she will meet with them again, she says "See you later.", but if she suspects that this is the last time she will get to see you, she says "Take Care".

I love this episode. It's very sad, though. My mother has recently been moved to palliative care. She has alzheimer's so this makes me think of her a lot. It's so cruel what that does to a person. Some memories fade are some are ripped from you. I have memory troubles myself. I have some brain damage from an accident. I lost half my memories and have difficulty making new ones. I sympathise with Old Man Voll quite heavily. I know I've been engaged twice in my life, though never married. The second person I was engaged to died before we could marry and I can't remember anything more about her than that and a couple of dry facts. It's the fact I can't remember what she smelled like that really upsets me somehow. I don't even remember her name until someone reminds me, but with my mother's alzheimer's and her soon to be dieing as well, and with nobody else still in my life from so long ago I think it's finally slipping beyond recovery. I hear people all the time saying, "I'll never be able to forget that..." and I hope they're right, but it's surprising how easily something so important to you can be lost. Maybe that's why Frieren is my favourite series, because it understands the importance of cherishing what we have.

Old Man Voll gets me every time

PearseNation

I love this episode, it's incredibly dense and it really engages deeply with the complexities of outliving a partner, being remembered and remembering. Every time I watch it I notice something new which tugs at my heart-strings. In terms of the statues, I always assumed that the statues would have mostly gone up after the defeat of the Demon King, and so even if some went up spontaneously due to small victories along the journey, most of them were likely encouraged by Himmel, in response to this conversation. But I don't have any additional information to support this than you do, that's just how I interpreted it. :)

Beautiful episode! Old Man Voll and Kraft are legends - also so cool to see a bit more of Heiter's influence on the next generations of heroes as well. Real leaders and heroes don't make followers, they make more leaders and heroes! They use every second of their time in these eps so well its truly an art.

DietPop

I was gonna say this episode always makes me tear up, but that's like every episode of this show! It's just so well written and animated.

Bambi

idk why seeing kraft's statue makes me sooo emotional😭 seeing him as a warrior with that human priest and knowing how religious he is as a monk now after that person has passed, i want to learn about their relationship and story so bad

Bambi

I’m sorry 💗 I’ve also lost a family member to that disease.. and during the same time, (I’m a professional ballerina) and I was cast in a very meaningful contemporary work that happened to be about dementia, and I was the one in the work going through it. (The famous choreographers father had it and created the work in memory of his father) it was a crazy way for me to process the reality of the disease and the passing of my grandfather. so… I feel you. Thank you for sharing, thought I’d share back 🥹 and yeah I saw Frieren deflecting and being in denial especially during that moment on the hill. I saw it clear as day. 🥲 but then seeing her realize and process it in the end was beautiful.

Jessica McCann

My favorite episode!!! Old man Vol MY GOAT!!! I love him so much. The way Frieren talks and smiles with him is such a nice detail. He really is one of the few people that understand how she must feel

Danny

Thanks for the reaction! As someone who lost a relative to dementia, this episode was a gut punch. My take on it is even though Voll struggles to remember Frieren initially, throughout the episode she keeps avoiding it, insisting that he's faking being senile. It's denial, especially when she tries to deflect him saying he can't remember his wife as a joke. During that talk next to the cliff, she was directly confronted with the truth of him not remembering something he absolutely should've, the fact that he is actually getting senile, or some form of memory loss. You can see her stunned, then she processes that grief for a brief moment before saying she'll carry his memory with her as well. Correcting him wouldn't help anyone but herself, and would probably only confuse or distress him until he forgets about it again later anyways. This series really grabs something inside people who experienced loss and doesn't let go lol. As you said, it's art.
