Orochimaru and the Akatsuki are open enemies, and are both actively working to thwart each others plans, even if its just for spite. You catch glimpses of this in the OG Naruto, during search for tsunade, Orochimaru makes a comment about foiling the Akatsuki's plans by killing Naruto, and you also see Orochimaru's severed hand, still wearing the Akatsuki ring, in a jar in his lair during the Sasuke Retrieval arc. Sasori holds a personal grudge against Orochimaru because he feels betrayed, which is why he takes such a special interest in the subject. But Sasori is also the chief spymaster of the Akatsuki, ostensibly because of his puppet techniques. Zetsu is technically the head "spy" but that's just because he's always skulking about, Sasori actually ran the intelligence network.
