Lowkey the Jogo scene at the end was amazing. I know Jogo was a horrible curse with terrible motives but it made me feel for him. Kaguya-Sama: Love is War is another peak anime but its a rom com so very different from JJK, DemonSlayer, etc.

Found the Toji scenes so good. Both times he died his last thoughts were about megumi and you can see his eyes turn white when he says "not zenin" meaning he got concious for just those few seconds to decide to end it there

Idk if it's because the blu-ray version, if I'm more attached to these characters after rewatching/rereading numerous times, or what. But, Toji finding out the person he is fighting is Megumi got me teary eyed this time.
To me, I see it as when Toji stepped on the rabbit and he sunk into the shadow a bit, he realized that the only person with that technique would be a Zenin and possibly his son. Once he finds out his name is Fushiguro, it must have been a proud father moment knowing that (1) Megumi doesn't claim being a Zenin and (2) His son has the crown jewel technique of the Zenin therefore making him incredibly powerful. In order to not cause his son anymore trouble, he decides to cut his return short.
Not the most conventional way to show your son love, but nonetheless it's still a powerful display of love from a father [who thought he didn't care about anything in the world anymore and is just trying to make it] for his son <3

About the subtitles: Yes they are different, and a few lines don't hit exactly the same but the vast majority of them are better localized than crunchyroll's subtitles.
There's also subtitles in the opening and ending, and the visual fidelity is far higher than the version Flexie was using before this (you won't notice it watching on Patreon though, probably only Flexie will be able to see it)

Yay! Wild ride is here hahaha~ Glad you enjoyed! I'll hop on the other one soon, watching your discussion now. Btw, just wondering, did you find out that Kusakabe's VA is also Urahara? :3 Also, yeah it was touching and sad when Toji realized who he was fighting, then offing himself so he didn't murder his own child. Megumi not knowing anything about that too, was also depressing. Your face matched your shirt a few times! ^_^;

Blu-ray just removes the after effects that get put in by Japanese law like dimming and ghosting and in SOME cases they retouch small things like changing tojis facial expression during his drop kick, but mostly that’s it (except for the episode after this which got massively retouched/added to in blu ray (that was because of the time they were given tho mappa execs are dookie🫠)
Kale
2024-06-18 19:50:13 +0000 UTC
That is somewhat true but it doesn’t actually apply to this and the mahoraga episode, the animation style change is in these eps is cause a specific “squad” of well known animators had extra time to utilize “full creative freedom” and go wild with em. But they still weren’t able to do their ENTIRE creative vision on the episode after this (still a masterpiece honestly) but in the bluray the next episode is fully finished just like this one.
Just a dif style of animation which is unrelated to the production problems
Kale
2024-06-18 19:48:10 +0000 UTC
Also, the change in animation style for episode 16 is due to the person who directed this episode, Itsuki Tshuchigami! They're very well known for their kagenashi-style, less shading and more manga accurate designs. Episode 16 was able to be given more time, whereas episode 17 wasn't, but the animators were still able to produce masterpieces, so we need to appreciate their hard work

The "simpler" style was actually an artistic choice of the episode director! It was not a compromise due to production issues. In fact, the choice to do kagenashi was some of the reason for stress on the schedule for this episode.

I would also add that in a season of an anime it is normal to see different animation styles between the episodes because the animators change from episode to episode, it's like this in every anime sometimes it is more noticeable other times less

Jeff
2024-06-18 15:48:51 +0000 UTC
Idk much about why, but the animation style chosen for this episode is called "kagenashi" which roughly translates to "shadowless" in English. It's a much flatter style that, true to its name, does away with shadows in most aspects of the animation. It's generally used as a way to simplify high fidelity movement (no shadows = less detail needed in each frame), but when used everywhere like this it actually increases the skill required on behalf of the animators. Drawings such as close ups and facial animation become much more difficult because animators can't rely on shadows to create depth. It's truly an incredible display of skill on this episode. Specially all the close ups on faces and expressions. Absolutely incredible work on display here. Easily top of the industry level work.

Toji stepped on a bunny while attacking Megumi, therefore he sank lower and the attack was not fatal, Megumi thought he would die when Toji first launched, and then Toji was just too fast for Megumi to hit him with his strike.

You forget the fact that Toji's heavenly restrictions negates domain expansion. The main reason of him defeating dagon is using the cursed tool playful cloud and if he had many cursed tools up his arsenal, then he sure would of beat him. It's funny because if Toji was standing there for more than minute after he defeated, he would have chose to fight Jogo and we wouldn't have this discussion.

There’s a couple reasons they changed the animation style:
1. Artistic freedom. This season has a lot of elite talent in the anime industry and the season director allowed key animators/artists more artistic freedom that’s why some episodes look a little different than others.
2. There is simpler line work and shading on the episodes and moments that require A LOT of moving parts, debris, action sequences etc., because it’s easier to animate (and unfortunately this season didn’t have the best production schedule so they were in a constant time crunch).
This lead animator/director of this episode animated and directed key episodes in Mob Psycho 100 and if you watch his episodes in that show you will see the similarities in the art style.
Basically, if anyone mentions “budget” or a “drop in quality” they have zero idea what they are talking about.
At the end of the day, some like this style, some don’t. :)

BTW You are by far the most entertaining reactor to JJK by far in my honest opinion. I believe Toji had to kill himself because he was like an unstoppable killing machine so he spared his son when he heard Fushiguro.
That heart nipple blonde guy who was talking with the twins is the same voice actor as Sosuke Aizen
Edit: They changed it because Mappa was stressing the hell out of them and word got out about how Mappa was mistreating them, I believe some key-animators went out on X (twitter) and complained, some even said they'll never come back working with Mappa again.
Props to them because seriously without them we wouldn't be seeing any of this.

Maybe as in top five in this current arc with the people in it but I do believe Toji would get stomped by Jogo. The only way Toji would have a chance is if Jogo underestimated him and had a planned like he did with Gojo. All Jogo need to do is trap him with Domain Expansion and he has Reverse cursed Technique. We must not forget that when Megumi said he was faster than Sukuna was when Yuji had only 2 fingers inside of him. Still, I will always Simp for papito Toji
Edit: And he defeated Dagon because his Domain was disrupted by Megumi and got some help at the end by Naobito

I believe the shift in animation was so that the animators would be able to accommodate all of the insane action that goes on. It’s a “simpler” style to animate extremely complicated scenes, because it would take way longer to maintain the normal style AND get the same level of action out of it. Some of the most insane sequencing in anime and there’s still more to come :)

This episode in terms on animation is one of the best ever, I'm not gonna explain the staff behind it but if you look it up you'll see that they are legends of the industry. What are you even saying? Big 2024 and people still cant differentiate between art and animation? The animation in this episode was impeccable, the less detailed art style is also intentional which is a trademark the episode director Miso who has directed some of the best anime episodes of all time, as it allows the staff to focus more on smoother animation while still looking great. IIRC this is episode was also finished 1 or 2 months before release so it had absolutely nothing to do with the working conditions. Arguably the most complete episode of the season
