Arnold just needed to eat something to prove he was still in the contest and hadn't already forfeited after the Fat Sausage round (you can't get disqualified if you're the last person left, since you've already won at that point). Had the kid just stopped eating instead of passing out, it probably would have come down to the judges to decide who won (since the contest has both kids eating off the same plate for some damn reason).
