The first episode is a reference to a real life tragedy that happened in the 50's. Musicians Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and "The Big Bopper" J. P. Richardson all died in a mysterious plane crash in Iowa. It's one of the most famous tragedies in the music scene (kinda like their Titanic) and it's often referred to as "The Day the Music Died". It's honestly a little messed up that they used it as the basis for an episode, but the whole thing was filled with references. Even the medieval dancing plague they mentioned actually happened and no one knows the cause.
