The whole thing about Leela's look and the sitcom joke is supposed to be a nudge to the old sitcom "Married with Children". It starred Leela's VA, Katey Sagal, where she wore tight clothes, big hair and had a sexist slob of a husband like Leela did. They also encouraged the studio audience to be really loud and rowdy.
