You guys need to check out "Pokemon Origins", it's a 4 episode miniseries that follows the game. Exactly what you're asking for. I think you might be able to find the episodes on Amazon Prime, last I checked. There are also a lot of great animated shorts like this series that follow the games or just flesh things out. Most can be found on the official pokemon YouTube channel
